2 Minute Video Review → https://youtu.be/6DZmbIfZnh8 Normally, a climbing game is pretty simple and straightforward to review. Use your hands to make it to the end of the level. But with Don’t Look Down, there’s actually a lot more content within it: -There’s deadly traps and moving obstacles. -There’s enemy bots that you can grab and destroy. -Destructible walls for hidden items. -And in most levels there are minigame pyramids to find which give you a timed challenge to earn scrap, which is the money of the game. Climbing games aren’t usually my cup of tea. But I have to admit that the cartoony colorful atmosphere and sheer variety of challenges really got me hooked on this one. It’s a lot of fun. The biggest downside for me was that the game really wants you to stay in the middle of your roomscale, so it’s constantly nagging you to recenter yourself with a floating notification. I found that pretty annoying and couldn’t find a way to turn that off. The estimated time to complete all the levels is 5 hours. Combine that with the added challenges that you can purchase with the scrap you earn, and there’s a mind boggling amount of obstacle course content in here. For all the possible gameplay in here, it’s a real hidden gem.
This challenging, indie climber is hilarious fun. Don't miss it! Pros + Great balance, starts slow, gets frantic! + Design wise, it's friendlier to players than The Climb + "Feels" great, they nailed the forward momentum mechanic + Each bot has real personality, with the checkpoint bot "Checky" particularly memorable Cons - Needing to type my name into the scoreboard every time is avoidably annoying - I'd have liked to see this on offer for £12 rather than it's list price; to sell more units. - I got all sweaty. :P Not really a con, I know. Needless to say, the overall experience get a 'Buy' recommendation from me. Thrilled this indie gem exists! More VR opinions at Reviews.Zimtok5.com (one big, filterable spreadsheet!)
The premise of Don't Look Down is quite simple: climb up to the top and grab the flag, but the design of all the levels make this game so much fun! Watch gameplay here: https://youtu.be/_wMtBxhcbFU There are four worlds to explore: garden, ice mountain, volcano and gearhead factory, each with 10 levels of increasing difficulty. The levels are occupied by moving platforms, timed obstacles, various bots and helpful powerups. This experience can be played while standing or seating, and there are ample settings to reduce VR nausea. If you are new to VR games, I strongly recommending starting out seated. The difficulty levels are well adjusted and can satisfy every challenge level you'd like. The climbing levels themselves are designed quite well to make the game feel like a classic platformer. Recommended as a fun game for all ages!
I'm a big fan of climbing games in VR and have pretty much played them all. This is my new favorite. The game starts out really simple to teach you the mechanics and ease you into it but then gets crazy! It has the feel like you're inside a classic platformer game while being something completely unique at the same time. ====Game Mechanics/Physics==== This game's physics are really good and actions feel natural. I've been able to easily grip things and climb quickly with no issues or false misses. Throwing/flinging yourself feels really good in this game too. ====Replay-ability==== The game is just super fun. It's a game I can see myself consistently going back to even after I have beaten it. The game also offers some built in replay-ability. There are items and bonus rounds to collect in every level. There is also the ability to unlock modifiers that either make the game easier or more difficult. ====Graphics==== Graphics are cartoony and not tying to be realistic. This is not at all a negative. It works for the type of game this is. ====Issues/Suggestions for improvement==== Overall solid game. No issues or glitches so far. Global leader board should be the default one shown instead of the local leader board. INFO: ====Locomotion====== This is a climbing game. You move though climbing, swinging and dropping. There also is a jetpack power up item that gives you a short burst. ====Avatar==== You only see your hands. ====Play length==== 4 themed sections with 8 levels each. Currently I've completed the first 3 sections and its taken me about 4 hours. I suspect the last section will take much longer as gotten more and more challenging. It took me 2 hours to beat just section 3. I will update this once I beat the game. ====Physical Activity Level==== moderate CONCLUSION: ====Worth buying==== Yes, at full price. This is actually fairly priced (if not under priced) for the amount of content and quality of game play.
1st Impressions Video with Commentary! // Oculus Rift + Touch // GTX 1060 (6GB) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx1T90wtsak My Quick Thoughts: A lot better than I thought and if you like games like Climbey and To The Top, you'll probably enjoy this. A competent VR climbing game with plenty of challenge and content.
As great as this game probably is, given that the demo was so much fun, it simply doesn't work. You can't get past the first main menu because the controllers simply aren't recognized in game. I'm not sure what the bug is, but it doesn't work on steam vr at all. I really enjoyed the demo to this, and really wish I could play this thing. But it looks like the devs aren't going to be updating it anytime soon, given the fact it hasn't been updated in 2 years.
I really enjoy the art style and speed running through levels to get my best time. Great game!
Really enjoying this game so far! Natural movement, cool simple aesthetic, plenty of replayability. Good fit for any VR players who like climbing games, classic platformers, or are just looking for a fun new thing to do in VR!
As I suffer quite a bit from neck and shoulder pains I would like to recommend this game to everyone who suffers from the same. Most VR games have the player looking either straight ahead or down, but this game mostly had one looking up but also makes the player look all around and this combined with the vary varied arm motions that the gameplay encourages, makes this an excellent game to help loosen up one's neck and shoulder muscles. Apart from these benefits, the gameplay has a nice progression with some fun speed challenges thrown in here and there (optional) and a friendly and easy to read visual presentation. In terms of graphics it's about on-par with mobile VR, so don't expect amazing graphical fidelity, but it really doesn't matter when you're playing. As a slight negative, if you are using the Valve Index controllers, you'll need to either set op your own mappings or use a user submitted one (there's a quite good one already available) as the default mapping plain doesn't work.
