Degeons Project is a science-fiction puzzle adventure developed and published by Mystery Studios that combines environmental storytelling, psychological suspense, and exploration-focused gameplay into an experience built almost entirely around atmosphere and mystery. The game takes place inside the abandoned Degeons Laboratory complex, a massive research facility once known for advanced scientific experimentation before a catastrophic incident forced the project into silence. Players enter the facility with very little information about what happened, and the game immediately uses that uncertainty to create tension. Instead of relying heavily on combat or action sequences, Degeons Project focuses on slow exploration, environmental puzzles, and psychological discomfort, creating an experience that feels more like uncovering a dangerous secret than surviving a traditional horror game. One of the game’s greatest strengths is the setting itself. The Degeons Laboratory is designed in a way that constantly feels cold, isolated, and unsettling. Long corridors stretch into darkness, flickering lights illuminate abandoned equipment, and locked doors hint at sections of the facility that were sealed away for reasons the player does not yet understand. The world feels genuinely abandoned, yet there is also a lingering sense that something is still present deep within the complex. Environmental storytelling is used effectively throughout the game, with scattered notes, damaged machinery, and visual clues gradually revealing fragments of the laboratory’s history. Rather than delivering exposition directly through lengthy cutscenes, the game allows players to slowly piece together the story themselves, which makes the mystery feel more immersive and personal. The atmosphere becomes increasingly effective because of how carefully the game handles pacing. Degeons Project rarely rushes players into dramatic moments. Instead, it slowly builds tension over time through silence, uncertainty, and subtle environmental details. Exploring a quiet hallway becomes stressful simply because the game conditions players to expect something hidden around every corner. There are long stretches where nothing overtly threatening happens, yet the oppressive atmosphere keeps players uneasy at all times. This approach works particularly well because the fear comes more from anticipation and imagination than from constant scripted scares. The game understands that suspense can often be more effective than direct horror, and it uses that understanding to maintain psychological pressure throughout the experience. A major part of what drives the game forward is the mystery surrounding the laboratory and the strange figure known as the Man in the Crow Suit. This mysterious presence appears repeatedly throughout the game, often silently observing the player from a distance before disappearing again without explanation. These encounters are some of the most memorable moments in the experience because they create a constant sense of paranoia. Players are never entirely certain whether this figure represents danger, guidance, or something far more symbolic. The uncertainty surrounding his role helps reinforce the game’s psychological tone and encourages players to continue searching for answers even when the narrative becomes increasingly abstract. Puzzle-solving forms the foundation of the gameplay loop, and the game does a respectable job of integrating puzzles naturally into the environment. Players must interact with scientific equipment, unlock restricted sections of the laboratory, restore power systems, analyze clues, and solve environmental challenges tied directly to the facility’s structure and history. Many puzzles require careful observation rather than simple trial-and-error solutions, which helps create a satisfying feeling of progression whenever players successfully uncover a solution. The game succeeds at making the player feel like an investigator navigating the ruins of a failed scientific experiment rather than simply moving from one puzzle room to another. The sound design deserves particular praise because it contributes heavily to the game’s oppressive atmosphere. Ambient noise constantly creates tension even during quieter sections. Distant mechanical sounds echo through empty corridors, subtle whispers emerge unexpectedly, and environmental audio effects create the impression that the facility itself is alive in some unnatural way. Silence is also used effectively, forcing players to focus on every small sound while moving through dark and abandoned areas. The soundtrack remains restrained for most of the game, relying on ambient tones and subtle audio textures instead of dramatic horror music. This minimalist approach makes sudden sounds or environmental changes significantly more unsettling because players spend so much time trapped in uncomfortable silence beforehand. Visually, Degeons Project uses lighting and environmental composition effectively despite clear indie limitations. The laboratory environments feel believable enough to maintain immersion, and the use of darkness, reflective surfaces, flickering lights, and environmental clutter helps create a convincing science-fiction horror atmosphere. Certain areas are especially memorable because of how they manipulate scale and perspective to create discomfort. The game understands that horror can come from environmental design just as much as from direct threats. Some of the strongest moments involve discovering impossible spaces, distorted rooms, or environmental inconsistencies that quietly suggest the laboratory itself has become unstable in ways that go beyond ordinary scientific disaster. However, the game is not without flaws. One of the most noticeable problems is pacing inconsistency during longer sections of exploration. While the slower progression helps build atmosphere, some areas feel stretched out unnecessarily, with extended periods of wandering through similar corridors before major discoveries occur. Players who prefer more gameplay variety or faster progression may occasionally feel the experience becoming repetitive during its quieter moments. The game sometimes leans so heavily into atmosphere that it risks slowing momentum too much between important narrative developments. Puzzle clarity can also become an issue at times. Some puzzles are well-designed and logically connected to the environment, but others provide very little direction, leaving players unsure whether they are missing important clues or simply overlooking small interactions. This occasionally creates frustration that interrupts the otherwise immersive atmosphere. Since the game relies heavily on exploration and observation, moments where progression becomes unclear can feel more exhausting than intellectually rewarding. Degeons Project is ultimately a tense and immersive psychological science-fiction adventure that delivers strong atmosphere, engaging environmental puzzles, and a genuinely unsettling sense of mystery. While technical roughness, occasional pacing issues, and narrative ambiguity prevent it from fully realizing all of its ambitions, the game still succeeds at creating a memorable experience for players who enjoy slower, exploration-focused horror and puzzle adventures. It may not provide constant action or straightforward storytelling, but its oppressive atmosphere and carefully constructed sense of paranoia give it a distinct identity that stands out within the indie horror genre. After having been informed that the game is in fact beatable I went and did so and in the process my opinion became a bit harsher. This game has the core it needs to be good but the movement is clunky and the "puzzles" are either so simple that they barely count or are so ???? that you probably stumble upon the solution by pure luck. Theres platforming sections that even if short are a pain because the game doenst feel made for it, nor does the second gun really have any need to exist one could just remove the 20 or so blocks that need to be shot. Anyway this game is weirdly frustrating for how short it is in its current state. I don't think theres anything fundamentally wrong that can never be fixed but currently it certainly is an experience. Original review: I originally played the demo during Next Fest and was morbidly curious with how this was gonna end up being. This game feels kinda all over the place but its not too bad until suddenly rooms break and aren't completable, the checkpoints set you back 10-15 minutes, bounce platforms do not actually send you where youre supposed to go unless you countersteer their movement. Its a wild ride and in it's current state i'm pretty sure its unbeatable
