About
In the 1980s, Defender of the Crown helped define a new kind of cinematic strategy game. Now it returns, rebuilt for modern platforms and remastered with an entirely new way to play.
Conquer territories, raise armies, storm castles, and shift the balance of power. It's the Defender of the Crown you remember - just sharper, cleaner, and built for today.

Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements.
Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems.
Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.

Everything that made the original special is intact: the ruleset, the pacing, the atmosphere. What's changed is everything around it - cleaner systems, improved balance, a modernized interface, and quality-of-life updates throughout.

Great memories from the Amiga 500 version, thank you for remaking this special game!
It is a tough call. and I hate this review..from a nostalgy perspective it is a must buy, but... ...the retro modus (the original) suddently was far too easy. I won it in my 1st run after 10-15 minutes. On Amiga i cannot remember to win it at all. ...the classic modus is retro in beautyful...to be honest, it feels cheap. ...the kingdom modus is an interesting concept but to be honest...it might keep me interested one more run and that might it be. It does not trigger me to just play it more. I think memory made me more interested, but after trying it in consider to refund it. 16.99 Euro is too much for a game. I might buy it again when its reduced to 5 Euro.

Defender of the Crown is a classic old game, and one of my formative gaming experiences. The Legend Returns provides three modes: the classic game, an updated mode with a face lift and UI and gameplay improvements, and a new "rogue-like" mode with dice and cards (in this mode all of the dexterity minigames are thrown out for themed dice games that offer a little more strategic gameplay). The various updates they've made in the new modes are very tasteful, and are pretty much universally good improvements. The sprite-work they've done for the updated modes especially deserves a callout because it is absolutely gorgeous. This is one of the better looking "retro" style games I've played. If Defender of the Crown inspires any feelings of nostalgia for you, then this is easily the best way to experience it in the current year. All that said, you can basically beat the game and experience everything on offer here in 30 minutes. As such, $20 feels like a steep price point.
I am a die hard fan of the original game. I still play it to this day. I was awaiting the release of this remake. I am sad. The retro mode is good, but unfortunately it offers the original Amiga version, while the DOS version was improved and more playable. Also I keep getting the same event every turn. Maybe a bug. But overall not good. The classic mode plays much better. Just siege and tournament are simply badly implemented and the raid is just too simple. The graphics seems better, but the charm and atmosphere is somehow lost. The new mode - the roguelike deckbuilder dice game. Well interesting idea,. but thank you - it's completely different game, that has nothing to do with Defender of the Crown.
Hurra?
Absolutely love it. Just the thing i never realised i needed in a remaster. So now how about Moonstone? Mega Lo Mania? Last Ninja? I could go on and on but those three with the same love and attention Defender of the Crown has got would be a dream come true.
I used to play this game back in the day on Amiga. Actually, that's the game that made me dream of having my own Amiga. I discovered it while visiting family, a year later I worked a summer job during spring break and bought my Amiga. And now almost 40 years later I am an IT architect. This game is special to me. I don't want to leave a bad review, but I can't recommend buying the game before a few improvements happen. I didn't have high expectations, I just wanted this game to be "Defender Of The Crown", playable natively on a modern computer with modern graphics. The Classic and Kingdom modes "kind of" deliver that, I am not complaining; but to be honest, I had expected a little better than that. I realize now that the company's previous title "Greenventory" is relatively pixelized, that seems to be their style. Ok, but judging by the screenshots, even "Greenventory" seems better graphically. Regardless, I had hoped it would be beautiful, but it isn't really. It is playable, and it has the same vibes as the original. But like for example the fights when you raid or save the lady, honestly that less than half-baked; that's Retro Mode on a higher resolution, so-to-speak. The original music is too absent and is barely recognizable in the Classic and Kingdom modes But then the really annoying thing is the controls. In 2026, it's still too much asking to be able to define which keyboard keys and mouse buttons do what. It's not like there's dozens of commands. When you besiege a castle, the way you adjust the catapult is by moving the mouse down. But seriously, you have to move your mouse down several centimeters/inches on your desk 3-4-5 times for each shot, meaning you pull, lift your mouse to put it back higher on your desk, and repeat several times. Have they played their own game ? What about using the mouse wheel, wouldn't that be more intuitive and modern ? And in raid mode, you move left and right with A and D. That's it, no configuration, don't think of using the cursor or anything else. If you are going to create a remake of an old game, with the intent of bringing it to modern standards, and you are not really changing the game itself. Well then, I would hope that the promise is at least configurable controls and modern graphics. I am not difficult, I am not asking for the game to be different than it was, but the visuals should be there and you should be able to configure your controls. Especially for the catapult, that's really a bad design choice. In fairness, the Kingdom mode is new and adds a new things, but please make the game playable and pleasing to the eye, that's all you had to do.
So that's where I remember that tune from! Seems like a pretty faithful remake so far. The game kicked me in the balls immediately just like the original. Cons: - I had to look at in-game encyclopedia to figure out what vassals were. I feel the concept that should have been in the tutorial since it seems so core to building up your army.
This is a weak thumbs up. It is fun, and it does bring back some memories, but I don't think it is as good as "Defender of the Crown, Heroes live forever" which came out in 2007. I bought this version hoping for a version that was much improved over the original, or at least better than the "Heroes live forever" version. I probably should have refunded it, but by the time I checked out all the versions included with this, I ate up more than two hours of play time. The mini games ok, but this wasn't worth the $16.99 I paid for it. If you can get it on sale for $5, it would be worth it. It is nice that they include the original version, but you can get an emulator and play that for free. I'd say 5/10 at it's current price point.
Every year or so I will revisit defender of the crown it is a classic that I loved as a kid. Now I have a version that is easy to get to and has all the nostalgia factor i need. Thanks for making this game I am loving the trip down memory lane. This game does exactly what it promised it would do. Cheers
