About
In the 1980s, Defender of the Crown helped define a new kind of cinematic strategy game. Now it returns, rebuilt for modern platforms and remastered with an entirely new way to play.
Conquer territories, raise armies, storm castles, and shift the balance of power. It's the Defender of the Crown you remember - just sharper, cleaner, and built for today.

Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements.
Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems.
Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.

Everything that made the original special is intact: the ruleset, the pacing, the atmosphere. What's changed is everything around it - cleaner systems, improved balance, a modernized interface, and quality-of-life updates throughout.

Every year or so I will revisit defender of the crown it is a classic that I loved as a kid. Now I have a version that is easy to get to and has all the nostalgia factor i need. Thanks for making this game I am loving the trip down memory lane. This game does exactly what it promised it would do. Cheers
I am very disapointed. Thinking of asking for a refund. The original game is in there. And i was always interested in buying this one. It is a title famous for its graphics. and its still as pretty as ever. The artwork of the original game is incredible. Otherwise the game is rather simple. But i would have bought it for a reasonable price as just that. But this remake promised 2 new modes. One extended version of the original with some improvments and one entirely new mode. Great i thought, they really went all out. This might actually be the best way to experience the game. The new graphics are just lame. Not bad, but entirely boring. A step back from the perfect pixel art you find in the retro mode. Then the deckbuilding mode is just a diffrent game entirely. Defender of the crown is a legendary title. No effort went into highlighting what made it so special. You could probably argue that gameplay wise the two new modes are an improvment. But there are no less than 1000 other games like that i could play instead. I was here for Defender of the Crown. Restored + Remastered - Reimagined - They didn't lie. They tried. And they at least managed to bring a classic game back with this release. Plenty of remasters forget that the original game is their best bet. Retro is even a good version of the og to play from what i can tell. At the same time, they did not have a great idea for classic and kingdom version. The highlight is retro, and maybe that was always going to be the case. But i would have been happy with classic and kingdom to just have options for the campain, extentions, addions etc for an older game that feel like they were made for it. What we have is the original and two things i woulod not look at normally. The price is hard to justify. There probably are people who will enjoy this though. Despite everything i said i suggest you give it a try if it looks interesting to you. Hell, I am still interested in the original game. But as it is, i regret my purchase.

I really hate writing this review. Defender of the Crown was one of my all time favorite games back in the C64 days. It took forever to load and every time you had to restart you had to go through the loading process which was a pain. But it was worth it. I played the PS2 version that came out that was similar (Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown) and it was enjoyable so I had high hopes for this remake. Sadly I was completely let down. The new version just wasn't fun and removed all the enjoyable aspects of the original game that made it fun. The original classic game must have been either the Amiga or NES version because it certainly wasn't the C64 version. The sword play handled differently, the jousting wasn't the same, and the conquest mode was different. All in all I was extremely disappointed and had hoped for more. I would say the same thing as others and just recommend playing the original on an emulator.
I'm glad that this nostalgic game has been made to be played in different versions again. Playing is fun and the games don't last very long. The game is simple but entertaining. This is pretty fun to play. Practice makes perfect.
This is a weak thumbs up. It is fun, and it does bring back some memories, but I don't think it is as good as "Defender of the Crown, Heroes live forever" which came out in 2007. I bought this version hoping for a version that was much improved over the original, or at least better than the "Heroes live forever" version. I probably should have refunded it, but by the time I checked out all the versions included with this, I ate up more than two hours of play time. The mini games ok, but this wasn't worth the $16.99 I paid for it. If you can get it on sale for $5, it would be worth it. It is nice that they include the original version, but you can get an emulator and play that for free. I'd say 5/10 at it's current price point.
Disclaimer: The original DotC game introduced me to turn-based strategy games and made me fall in love with them on the C64, almost 40 years ago. ---- This is a hard no for me. I am not interested in the classic game (sorry folks, it was mightily fun back then, but barely qualifies for strategy any more), I bought it for the Classic one. I expected smooth and engaging minigames, paying homage to the original ones, while somewhat expanding the strategy part and giving a facelift for the AI (which was braindead back then, and -spoiler alert- not better now either). Retro mode is... well, the same as before. But the Classic, oh god... - AI is braindead. No logic whatsoever in it's decisions. - Minigames are trash. Jousting lasts for a few seconds, barely enough to get a grasp on what's going on. Battles have tactical options, but aforementioned options are neither explained, nor seem to do anything. So i just went with bombarding and steamrolled everyone, even superior forces. Raiding seems fun at first, then you realize after the second one that it's a super-shallow button-smashing fest. Siege/catapult part is pixel-hunting (targeting). - Strategy mode is more or less the same as before, but with a braindead AI which either goes passive-suicidal or berserk in attacking you. What should I say...?! It's a major fumble. Graphics is beautiful, atmosphere is amazing, music and sounds are nice. It suffers from the same issues what the developer's previous game, Greedventory did. Amazing art, atmosphere, music, but basically nonexistent, trash gameplay with questionable design decisions. They should either fire their designers or hire competent ones. Preferably both. And that's it, shame on them.
The legend has returned, indeed. So many years later, and we are truly grateful for it! Clear recommendation from an old Amiga veteran. Why? The Retro-Mode alone is a 1:1 time capsule from 1986 and worth the price for me. It captures everything that made the original so special - jank included. The two new modes add modern QoL and strategic depth without disrespecting the source material. Best of both worlds. Might not be for everyone, though, especially for gamers who didn't grow up with this kind of design. For me, however, this transcends 'game' or 'remake' entirely; It's a trip down memory lane, and I'm all in.
I don't have even one in it, yet. And I don't know if I will get too much more. But that was my throwback thursday of the year. I can almost smell the office of my friends dad. Where we played it back in the days. On an Amiga 500.
ніколи раніше не грав у оригінал, але прикольно
Schlechte Umsetzung !!!! Für den Preis ein riesen Arschtritt ,habe vor 3-4 Wochen noch das Original gespielt was mal wieder richtig Spaß gemacht hat .Mehr wie 3-5 Euro sollte es nicht kosten ....
