About
In the 1980s, Defender of the Crown helped define a new kind of cinematic strategy game. Now it returns, rebuilt for modern platforms and remastered with an entirely new way to play.
Conquer territories, raise armies, storm castles, and shift the balance of power. It's the Defender of the Crown you remember - just sharper, cleaner, and built for today.

Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements.
Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems.
Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.

Everything that made the original special is intact: the ruleset, the pacing, the atmosphere. What's changed is everything around it - cleaner systems, improved balance, a modernized interface, and quality-of-life updates throughout.

Pretty fun game, I like the new classic mode. Though I have to say they need to improve the gameplay of the Joust Tournaments. Here is a gameplay of all 3 modes so you can check the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JILkDlDyfRk
I was there in the C64 days, and then on the Amiga. Defender of the crown was, and still is, one of my favourite games of all time. I would have played thousands of hours of this game over the years. The Legend Returns is a competent revisitation and overhaul of the original. Retro mode is the amiga version, complete with the inability to select ammo types for the catapult (never worked out if that was possible). The only discrepancy I saw was in the starting dialogue when talking to Robin, he says 'then like you', while I remember the orignal saying 'men like you'. Being able to choose resolution and CRT settings is a nice touch. Jousting feels different than I remember, and its really hard to not kill the other guys horse and lose all your territory. Classic mode is a nice revamp of the original. It stays faithful while tweaking few things, mostly in the right direction. There are a few small issues, like the text displaying 'Your home castle is being attacked' whenever the enemy attacks any owned castle. Building your army now uses a turn, which isn't a terrible idea. I think there are a few little things to be addressed in patches, but it feels like a worthy update. Seiges now have randomised aiming points, which is a nice addition. I think they could have taken it a little further, maybe by individualising the characters in raids, or adding an intro animation for tournaments like the original had, but they've made a few changes to the original gameplay that make it feel like a proper update, not just a re-skin. Kingdom mode I've spent the least time in, but I've enjoyed it so far. It takes things in a totallay different direction, but it cleverly takes the graphics from classic mode, and references text quotes from the original, to make it feel like a new game with all the feel of defender of the crown. I think The Legend Returns has something for everyone. If you miss the orignal and want to play a faithful, windows compatible reproduction of the original, this is it. If you want the orignals's gameplay with improved aesthetics and modern quality of life improvements, classic has you covered. Finally, Kingdom mode offers plyers new to Defender of the Crown a new gameplay experience that ties in the original and classic mode to allow the current generation of gamers to bask in the glory that was Cinemaware's magnum opus. This release represents good value for money, and I'm really happy I bought it. Have at you!
