I've boarded a rogue vessel in a sector far from home, in the hopes of finding some epic loot. I slowly progress through the dark and cramped corridors, with steam pouring from the vents, taking what resources I can find. I hear noises in the next room, and prepare to engage. The fight was long and hard, but I made it. I killed four of them, but I know more have now been alerted, and I'm down to my last magazine. I scrounge up what I can and move on. I know the bridge is ahead, just a few more rooms... I open the next door, and see two more robots on patrol. I don't know if I can take them out with my remaining ammo. They haven't seen me yet. I sneak up and take my first shot, it's a critical and the bot goes flying. Now the next... *click*... *click*click*click* ♥♥♥♥! I turn and run, maybe one of the bots I killed earlier dropped some ammo. I manage to get out of the line of fire, and desperately search for something. Aha! On the floor. I fumble to get the mag into my pistol, with my foe closing on me. I hide behind the door frame as it approaches and... Boom, headshot. This vessel is mine. Deep Space Salvage Crew is a really tense and atmospheric dungeon-crawler set inside sort-of 80's style industrial space ships. The rogue-lite gameplay creates great emergent storytelling as you make your way through these abandoned ships, not really knowing what you might find. Very much worth a try if you like VR shooting games!
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my initial impressions review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/_qIPSHYvlNs This game is off to a really good start in Early Access. It has a fun & satisfying gameplay loop. You basically go out and take salvage from ships with usually deadly robots / drones inside. You pick up loot with different benefits. You can fix your ship to do FTL warp drives, increase scanner range, or help in finding research items for improved weapons or tools. There's different loadouts you can use, partially based on luck. You basically roll for different available weapons. You can choose a silly loadout like the clown loadout where you have a squeaky horn & some mines to take out enemies or you can go for a more traditional tac handgun that you can add attachments to, including a silencer or a holosight. You can also add grenades to some loadouts. As you traverse deep space, you'll have different dangers to face or you can find a trading post. I have only played the game for about 2.5 hours so I don't if there's other things you can face. So far my biggest criticism of the game is the ugly UI. I do enjoy the graphics, it's kind of like a retro 90s space aesthetic, kind of like the power rangers. The sounds however could be better, although I could generally tell where enemies were coming from so the spatial audio was alright. Game is running on the Unreal Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 fps. I did not experience any serious issues or bugs, although I did experience a few annoying ones. Like when starting out, sometimes I get stuck on the starting tube for a few seconds before I can move. Or your hand placement being off when climbing ladders. Overall, I had fun playing this game. I do recommend it. I don't think it's at the level of a Compound, which I still believe is the best roguelite shooter in VR. However, this game is giving it serious competition. I like the upgrade system, not only to yourself but to your ship. I hope there's boss fights (I haven't faced any so far) and I hope there is more enemy variety the further I get (so far there has only been a few types of enemies). Is it bad? No, I wouldn't say so. Okay, then is it good? ... No, I wouldn't say so... But for $19 it's not a waste, it's just kind of weak overall. It becomes very apparent immediately which rooms with be "fight rooms" and it isn't really all that exciting. That said, the gun feels fine and the game looks and runs fine so overall not a bad time. I will say, I would really prefer an option to only remove magazines by a button press. I don't like single handing pistols and would like to aim with both hands but the grip on the index will activate if I do so which causes me to remove the magazine. Small gripe but even so
G2 controls don't work 5 min into the game i am stuck because i can't unload a gun, can't play it will probably refund it.
i think this game needs some more time in the oven personally, and have asked for a refund, but i'll periodically checking in on it to see improvements- that being said here's my two primary points of concern number 1: for this being a vr shooter, the shooting itself feels very awkward. part of me thinks its due to the scaling on the guns, as they're cartoonishly large and feels wrong. number 2: the sound design is sort of lackluster. loot pickups emit a small tone, engagements get "battle music," that sort of disrupts the flow of how these derelict ships present themselves. i didn't play much of this game, but those two points just sort of set me off immediately. it might be wise to wait a couple of months before picking up this title.
Only played 1.4 hrs so far, but really enjoying the gameplay mechanics and overall atmosphere! Has a retro 80s feel and i like the graphic style. Haptic feedback is not yet added but the developer has stated it will added soon once perfected. Some good fun to be had here! Looking forward to see how this game progresses!
An interesting game loop but needs a lot more polish before I would recommend this game. not being able to close cupboard doors without using the grip feature is very off putting. Additionally I have been experiencing a glitch where while I move my weapon flies out of my hand/pocket that I last put it in. Hoping to see more updates soon!
I'm already loving this game, sure there's some little things here and there that could use some polish, but you know what? I almost don't care, I'm having fun with the game. I have heard some stuff about certain controllers not working properly with the game so do some research on that before buying, probably just a quick google search away. But me being on the Oculus Quest 2 (I REFUSE to call it "Meta" it's stupid but that isn't what this review is about) I didn't run into any issues. Maybe turn the bloom down a little bit, that did start to hurt my eyes after a while. Other than that and some interesting collision, no complaints here. Grenades are also fun, the robots have panic voice lines.
