“Deep Below” a mediocre game made worse with bugs.
Pros +Free Cons -Buggy -Unoriginal concept -Unintuitive UI -No video options Fps issues may be fixed but a thousand more issues remain. Deep Below is a platformer adventure game that appears to be set in some lava filled ancient ruin; A very cliche setting for an adventure game but that’s the least of its issues. From the moment the game is launched I am placed in a room with a flickering candle that looks like it was drawn in paint and a book that says “Start Game” on it. One may think that clicking on the book would be what launches the game but you, however, would be strongly mistaken as you must (without any instructions) realize that you have to instead press ‘E’ to open the book. Once oneself stumbles their way into opening the book they are greeted with the main menu consisting of “Play Game”, “Options”, and “Exit Game”. Still using the keyboard to navigate you can finally play this game. The world fades from black and one will find their self in a cavern with multiple pictures on the walls detailing basic controls. However crudely done this does serve as a good way to demonstrate the controls to the player. The game claims to support VR on one of the said pictures I, however, can not test this as they only support the Oculus Dev kit 2 and only own a Vive. More notably the game assumes the player will know that ‘WASD’ and spacebar are used to walk and jump around as there are no pictures telling me how to move, not a major deal for a veteran gamer but what could be disastrous to a beginner. After a short walk, the player runs into another picture, this time, informing the player that they are able to sprint which brings up my next issue I had with this game. There's absolutely no indication of when your ability to sprint will run out, no traditional meter on a hud or even heavy breathing as the character tires from spriting. You will just simply stop with no warning and this lead to multiple deaths when some jumps require the player to sprint to even make the jump. On a positive note, the rope swinging was at least mostly enjoyable the controls were lackluster as there is no real way to control your swing but it worked. In not too long the player comes across scattered books and knocked over bookcases with a glove of some sort in the middle. It is intuitive enough to pick it up and then to open the door. This part of the game was fairly well done. In not too long I acquired an upgrade to my glove that allowed me to shoot glowing crystals which add an interesting mechanic to the game of lighting up dark areas to make it possible to explore. There were, however, moments that despite the lights indicating ammo being full I was unable to shoot the crystals out. This made exploring both frustrating and incredibly time-consuming as I jumped around and spammed my mouse trying to shoot. Now despite all of this, I found myself starting to enjoy the game running through caves and shooting crystals to light the way that was until I ran into the godforsaken bugs of the autosave. Now as of writing this review I have tried to play this game twice, both times ending after encountering a bug with the autosave feature. The game seems to enjoy putting the checkpoints, in lava or off the edge of a platform. Both cases end with the player dying over and over with no possible way to recover. https://youtu.be/yK4I6ZN0pC8 This video demonstrates the autosave function failing and then when pressing ‘L’ to load the last save it fails again by putting me back at an earlier save that was bugged out ending my first attempt at a playthrough. This game may be a wonderful game but being riddled with bugs like this make it impossible to enjoy or play. It is to be said that the best part of this game is the exit button.

UPDATED BELOW I liked my 30mins playing this, i would of liked to play more but unfortunately i got stuck in an infinite falling glitch. That combined with the fact that the game runs at 6fps in some parts with an overclocked GTX970, means that platforming is almost impossible, and the game is pretty much unplayable in its current state. Now this is a student project so i don't know about the chance of the game being optimized, or bugs being patched, so as much as i'd like to reccomend this, i can't. What a damn shame as the game showed promise, and i don't like giving a 'bad' review to a student game as the students obviously have talent. Lets see if anything gets fixed, i wouldn't count on it though. UPDATE - The devs patched the game to fix the framerate and the game now runs at 60+fps for me. I still can''t reccomend the game though as i have run into 2 game breaking bugs and had to start from the beginning as there is no manual save function with the game. I posted a thread about this and hopefully the devs will attempt to fix the bugs, i can then uipdate the review.
This game looked really interesting so I wanted to try it out. Unfortunately, I can´t play the game because of extreme fps lags. (UPDATE) The lag issue has now been fixed thanks to the developer and it´s working beautifully! I´m going to keep playing and I´ll be back with more information (UPDATE 2) I have played for about an hour and I really liked the gameplay. I like how you collect items to upgrade your gauntlet. The upgrades allows you to gain new abilities so you can proceed the beyond the obstacles. The rope mechanic flows really well when you swing and let go, but sometimes it lets go automatically, so it has caused me some deaths. You WILL die in this game and that will make you think about your mistakes and how to find the right way or fix the problem. The level designs are cool, the music is good, the darkness makes it more challenging and the gauntlet is a cool mechanic. The big issue in it´s current state are the CHECKPOINTS. The game is supposed to automatically save, so if you ever get stuck you can press "L" to return to the last checkpoint. The problem however, is that there are no particular checkpoints and it doesn´t tell you when it is saving. I did get stuck in some kind of station, I was floating in the air unable to do anything (Please fix) and so I pressed "L". I returned almost to the start of th game where you found the gauntlet. I would like it to have more often checkpoints. Maybe everytime you upgrade you gauntlet. Also when you quit the game, it starts from the beginning. I really like the game so far, but I don´t want to start over from the beginning just because of some ingame bug.
This game looks good and it has nice gameplay, but there are a bunch of bugs that need to be fixed. Respawn points are in places where its just a death point, the gauntlet doesn't fire at times, and there isn't really options for adjusting graphics, changing keyboard buttons, etc., it looks like a console port. This game has a lot of potential, but the bugs and other things ruin it from being an enjoyable game, please fix this game.
Deep Below 10 из 10
Deep Below seems like a pretty cool adventure game. It has some performance issues right now, as I have had some frame dips but overall I think its alright.
game worked well, all saves lost 4 evre
İmkansızı parmaklarınızın ucuna getiren benzersiz ve gizemli bir eldiven kullanarak yüzeye ulaşmaya çalışan, yeraltının derinliklerinde yakalanan yalnız bir hayatta kalanın yorulmak bilmeyen yolculuğunu deneyimleyin.
I fell through the ground and then finished the game :D. Pros - nice music - good platform mechanics - interesting story Cons - the game is 4.72 GB not 800MB - this is a tech demo with many bugs - sharp edges reveal the end of the stage or you can see trough walls and elevations - spam the crystal to see anything in constant darkness - press E to start a game the rest is explained after, but the book could have been opened automatically, after all is the menu system why should i need to open it 4/10 rating.
it's free, so it gets a pass from a negative review. apparently still being updated as well, so even better. Lots of bugs, missing audio for moving objects and environment. Not very polished. Your hand isn't part of your viewmodel, but an actual object ingame, floating in front of your camera, which leads to weird sights like your hand clipping through objects if you get too close. The limited stamina for sprinting is actually kind of annoying tbh. There are no animations for grabbing a rope, so you're teleported onto the rope when you grab. The positives are the nice graphic stye. Even with low res textures, the lighting and overall atmosphere makes up for it. echo is really nice, immerses you into the setting. the platforming is fun, reminds me of the 90s - early 2000's action platformer games I used to love. Music is atmospheric. Overall, it's free, so I'm not too critical on it. I'll wait and see if it ever gets better updates.
