Unfortunately, I'm having to leave a bad review. The game has so much potential, with lots of jump scares, but once you get to the man at the end of the hall, it glitches and the screen goes black. Being a full time streamer, my community was very disappointed to say the least. For that reason i can't leave a good review.

I'll be honest. It needs some work. The spooks are there! I got scared countless times. The atmosphere was eerie and it made me on my toes most the game. BUT, it doesn't really have a direction as in where to go story-wise. Like after I discover a note or a room, I'm wondering to see if I might trigger something since I didn't do something in the order the game wanted me to do. But if, I feel, the game made it more apparent in which order it wanted me to discover things in (maybe more highlighted items, and then de-highlighting them when not needed) or stuff like that, I would have enjoyed the game more. The game was a mixed review for me. But what unbalanced to a thumbs down was the annoying wondering. I've played longer free demos than this game (20 minutes for a full play through) but it had good enough visuals and I would like to see more from the developer if they improve upon this game so I am giving it the thumbs up.

Death in the Family is a first-person psychological horror experience from developer and publisher Semka that embraces a slow-burning style of storytelling over fast-paced scares. The game places players inside an abandoned apartment inherited after the mysterious disappearance of family members years earlier. What begins as a simple visit to inspect the property quickly evolves into a disturbing investigation as strange phenomena reveal that the building still hides secrets connected to its tragic past. Instead of focusing on combat or survival mechanics, the game invites players to uncover the truth through exploration, observation, and puzzle-solving, creating a horror experience driven by curiosity and tension rather than action. The narrative unfolds gradually as players examine documents, interact with objects, and witness increasingly unsettling paranormal events. The apartment serves as the centerpiece of the story, with every room contributing another piece to the mystery surrounding the vanished relatives. Rather than relying on lengthy conversations or cinematic exposition, the game lets the environment communicate much of its lore. This approach encourages players to pay close attention to seemingly insignificant details, making the investigation feel personal and rewarding. While the plot remains relatively straightforward, it successfully builds intrigue through careful pacing, allowing the supernatural elements to emerge naturally as the mystery deepens. Gameplay is intentionally simple, centering on exploration, environmental interaction, and solving light puzzles that unlock new areas and story progression. The puzzles rarely become overly complicated, making the experience approachable for players who prefer narrative-focused adventures over mentally demanding challenges. The absence of combat shifts the emphasis toward atmosphere, requiring players to confront fear through uncertainty instead of direct confrontation. Every hallway explored and every newly opened door contributes to a constant feeling of anticipation, as players never know when the next unsettling event will occur. Atmosphere is easily the game's greatest achievement. The confined setting transforms an ordinary apartment into a place filled with dread through clever lighting, realistic interior design, and effective environmental storytelling. Darkness is used sparingly but purposefully, while the quiet moments between supernatural encounters often become just as unnerving as the scares themselves. Rather than bombarding players with nonstop jump scares, the game allows suspense to build naturally before delivering moments that leave a lasting impression. This measured pacing creates a stronger psychological impact, especially for players who enjoy horror rooted in tension instead of shock value. Visually, Death in the Family presents a believable domestic environment that feels convincingly lived in despite its abandoned state. The environmental details reinforce the sense that a family once occupied the apartment before tragedy struck, making the unfolding mystery more emotionally engaging. Although the graphics do not aim to compete with large-budget horror productions, they effectively complement the game's realistic style. Sound design plays an equally important role, using subtle ambient noises, distant creaks, and eerie silence to maintain a persistent feeling of unease. Together, the visuals and audio create an immersive setting where even routine exploration can feel unsettling. One of the game's strengths is its focused scope. It avoids unnecessary distractions and remains committed to delivering a concise horror experience with a clear beginning, middle, and conclusion. Players looking for branching narratives, extensive replayability, or complex gameplay systems may find the experience somewhat limited after completing the story. However, its streamlined structure ensures that the pacing rarely drags, making it well suited for those who prefer shorter horror adventures that can be completed in a single session while still offering a satisfying mystery. Death in the Family succeeds because it understands the strengths of psychological horror. Instead of relying on constant danger or elaborate mechanics, it builds suspense through atmosphere, storytelling, and environmental exploration. Although the gameplay remains fairly basic and seasoned horror fans may find some of its scares familiar, the compelling premise and consistently oppressive mood help the experience stand out among indie horror titles. Players who appreciate narrative-driven horror games that prioritize immersion over action will likely find this a worthwhile journey into a haunting family mystery. Rating: 5/10
