This very charming oldschool game is a throwback to the era of personal computers in the 80s, when playing videogames meant you were some kind of masochistic autist. Indeed, Deadfall Tropics is difficult and it's whole offering is based on difficulty. The gameplay seems to be an hommage to the old Rick Dangerous game of Atari ST/Amiga fame. You will have to restart the same jump a dozen times until you perfect it and learn the good combination. Only then, can you proceed through the dozen other chokepoints of each level. That said it's the good kind of difficulty, the one that you can overcome with strategy. The last level will require a bit of perseverance because it becomes a tad hectic and the game doesn't save enough progression at this point. But even an average, non-hardcore player like myself I managed to complete the game, and if you stick to it, you'll constantly amaze yourself by how you can exploit the floaty platforming to beat the odds in the most unclean ways. The dev managed to reach the sweet spot where you feel rewarded by yourself for having overcome the obstacles and at the same time get the narrative reward. The old movie theme and the narrative aspect are rewarding enough to make you want to always reach the next level and see the story. It's not a literary masterpiece, far from it, but it's very pleasant and feel like a little bone thrown your way. All the character portraits are ripped of old actors photos and the music too evoques some dramatic tension felt in classic movies. The whole thing is aesthetically very pleasant. The pixel graphics are very well used and perfectly set the mood of the sun setting over a dark jungle. Only the text could have used a less pixelled font because it's hard to read sometimes. I think this game could set a new standard for competitive difficult platformer, maybe the dev should think about implementing some sort of global scoreboard with a way to know every player's progression. I can only recomend it, but whatever you do, don't press the letter Q ! Modeled estimate over time, reconstructed from Steam's monthly review histogram.
Legend tells of a lost platforming treasure waiting in the manky depths of Steam's festering bowels for one to discover and shout with joy "I found a new indie platformer that doesn't suck!". Surely this is the very definition of a hidden gem? It came out over 4 years ago and as of writing this has only 11 reviews! Go to any 'Top 10 list of Indie platformers' on Youtube and you will see all the usual entries Celeste, Hollow Knight, Spelunky ... yawn. Not that's there anything wrong with naming the obvious ones, but enough already! I need something else. Personally, this is just the sort of thing I've been looking for. As you can already see it has lovely pixelart. The game feels like a mixture of difficult cartridge platformers, mixed with cinematic elements of of the Amiga classic Flashback. While the artwork (with outlined characters) reminds me of classic Konami arcade games like Green Beret, Mat Mania and Track & Field. You can see that a lot of love has been poured into this game, so if the look of it appeals I really think you can't go wrong with spending $5 bucks or less on it. And do the developer a favour and leave another review. This game deserves some love! Oh and by the way, I'm pretty sure the game never explains the controls, so it took me a while to realise all 4 buttons on the controller each do something. Jump, punch, shoot and sprint. So keep that in mind and you might die less (but probably not). p.s. The other reviewers are not kidding about how freakin' difficult this game is (I do feel like the hitboxes are a little on the unfair side). I'm not sure I'll ever be able to beat it, but I still admire the art style, oldschool gameplay and atmosphere.
