After the initial dream-like stage, you wake up back in the desert. The world is open, and there are several locations you can visit, but the overall area is very small. The best idea is to follow the main quest, which is marked with waypoints so you know where to go, but you can still explore, fight enemies, and look for hidden pieces of gear. There’s some quiet narration throughout the game, but there are no subtitles, so everything is inaudible. Gameplay is similar to any third-person action game. Besides movement and basic actions such as jumping—which isn’t useful in combat—you only have to worry about attacking and defending. Your main weapon is a stick with two types of attacks, but there’s also a sling that can feel a bit too powerful. However, it uses a limited number of stones that you can replenish from large rocks scattered around the area. Attacks and moves are limited by stamina, but it recharges faster than you can spend it. Even if you mash the button and drain your stamina bar, you can still attack as if it were full. You can defend or dodge at the right moment to gain an advantage over enemies, but there’s not much reason to do so. The main reason is the unlimited healing. Although you have to wait a few seconds for it to recharge, you can use it at any time. The downside is that the healing animation is long because you kneel down and pray. If you’re attacked during this time, the healing cancels, and you’ll have to wait again. This isn’t a big issue with normal enemies because you can simply run away from them. Bosses can be trickier, but even they have a few slow attacks that give you opportunities to heal. Sometimes, when you reduce an enemy’s health to near zero, you can use “judgement,” which is just a finishing move. It’s usually faster to finish them off with a standard attack so you don’t have to sit through the animation. You can also sneak up behind an enemy and assassinate them instantly. Killing enemies grants you faith, which eventually levels you up. Leveling up increases either your health or stamina, and each upgrade is predetermined. Every other improvement comes from gear pieces found throughout the world. You can spot them from a distance thanks to a yellow flame, so you don’t have to search every corner of the map. There’s also a day–night cycle, but it doesn’t make any real difference except that flames are visible from farther away at night. Unfortunately, the entire experience is over in less than an hour and feels more like the demo chapter of a larger story. At the end, it just says that the stage is finished and that you can explore the map. For that reason, I don’t recommend buying the game at full price. There are also quite a few bugs, such as getting stuck in the environment, falling through the floor, and attacks failing to register. Pick it up only at a steep discount.
