Darwin’s Demons is an arcade style space shooter in which you battle a population of evolving aliens. The alien’s morphology, fire type, and behaviors are all encoded by a digital genome. The aliens that are best able to shoot or evade you reproduce to make the next generation.

Darwin's Demons is a student project from University of Idaho. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. Needless to say if an educational institution taught me incorrectly on purpose, I'd ask for my money back. This is a frankly awful ripoff of Space Invaders, and it's not remarkable that awful ripoffs of Space Invaders exist. What is awful is that educational facilities both think it's okay to teach students who pay a lot of money to learn about game development that all they need to know is how to make 1980's arcade games. I could insert an Idaho joke here but I won't. Secondly, and perhaps more alarmingly, the facility didn't teach the students (as Tetris Company LLC vs Xio Holdings shows us) that game designs, concepts and other elements are copyright protected. You can't just rip off the work of others. We also have to question what value there is for gamers on Steam when institutions flood the store with low quality 2D video game homework assignments... sure, it might make the students feel good about themselves, but this has no benefit for gamers who have to wade through this stuff to find professionally made 3D games. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $3 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. It's also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who paid money for this... nobody got refunded. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.

Its fun to be a selection pressure. It really is. For the Price its a nice little game that i can see myself playing every now and then. Obviously its more fun with a controller (i use XBOX one which works great) The game`s sound and graphics are nothing to write home about but the gameplay loop is great, there are many upgrades and unlocks and i already recommended it to my friends
A convoluted attempt at updating the classic Space Invaders style of game. It's interesting in some ways and is jam packed with a variety of strange options. Unfortunately it also suffers from having so much jammed into it that none of it really feels as fluid or timeless as the game it's trying to riff off of. A lot of options exist just to clutter up your options and make the game feel more full rather than actually enhancing the game play in any notable way. Overall if this had a price tag over $1 I'd probably thumb it down, but for free it's at least worth checking out. It's not terrible, it's just really weird and could have been done better. One notable feature is that the AI will learn from you and make the game harder as you play. That's one reason to at least fool around with the game a little and see the potential it could have had. There's certainly some interesting gimmicks in it, it just also suffers from a lot of bloat instead of a more streamlined and polished experience. --- While you are here, would you consider following my curator page? Want to read all of my reviews and not just the curated ones?
Originally a $4.99 game that went Free. Space Invaders with lots of different ships and gimmicks. All those options don't play that differently though.
clever ! challenging great reflections to be exchange over the mechanics thanks
Darwin's Demons fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on, good game. Personal Suggested Purchase Price: $0.49 Or Less During Sale
It's Space Invaders with Evolution. It's also the start of something bigger at U of I, me thinks. Honest developers. Can even give it the, "It's educational" spin. ;) Worth considering if you see it on sale. Good buy, if you're feeling generious towards education sector (University of Idaho, in this case).
