About
This game isn’t for everyone.
Darkward is a dark, text-driven point-and-click adventure that won’t hold your hand. Instead of a map, you’ll get traces. Instead of explanations, you’ll get consequences. And instead of heroism, more often a choice that hurts.
You’ll step into a world of crumbling sanctuaries, twisted vows, and old truths that should have stayed buried. The story is built from fragments: inscriptions, found records, the meaning of places, and what you decide to do — or refuse to do.
A Dark Souls mood without combat. Lovecraftian dread without cheap jump scares.
Just you, the words, the silence… and links that open the next step into the dark.
Text-based point-and-click gameplay: no typed commands — you choose actions by clicking links in the text.
Atmospheric exploration & lore: the world speaks indirectly and rewards attention.
Choices with consequences: some paths close forever; others open only later.
Dark fantasy: faith, ruin, and things beyond human understanding.
If you want fast action or clear explanations, you won’t find them here.
If you enjoy indirect storytelling, mystery, and slow revelation, Darkward will reward you.
Recommendation: don’t rush — read between the lines.
Around you now lies a time that does not flow. Your body is heavy, hollow and foreign – seated rigidly with your arms crossed over your chest. You feel no heartbeat. Your lips are cracked and mute, your hands are grey and cold. The silence around you is suffocating, as if this world has never known a voice. The chill of the stone bites into your skin like a thousand needles. You feel pain, but you sense it differently, as something distant. Your soul is empty, as empty as your mind and memory.
Slowly, you rise from the stone. Your limbs crack in the silence, as if they had forgotten how to move. Dust spills from your grey hands, and your muscles obey only under protest. You stand – not as one who lives, but as one who has been commanded to rise.
Rise, Wanderer!

The game conceptually is good, the sound effects are excellent and create an appropriate atmosphere, but it could easily deliver a better experience. Inventory items should be represented by icons (images) rather than simple words ('sword'), and there should be a mini-map of the game illustrated just for viewing, even if there are only a few scenes to go through, in order to increase player immersion and allow better identification of the scene as a whole. The few images displayed could be better, they are all very low quality AI generated. Being free is no excuse to deliver a half-finished game; I believe it would have been better if a small amount like $2 or $3 were charged and a much more polished product were delivered.
I loved the ambiance! The game has a small flaws here and there, couple of "easy solutions" like text instead of images. I really enjoyed the choices since I haven't played text-based games before and I was very intrigued how they used it in this game. Every click has an outcome! Sound effects were also really good for a free game and I think they understood the dark fantasy part! I would've loved to see more artstyle, that is my only complaint!

Darkward has some decent worldbuilding, ambience and art style. It however can very much be like the Sierra point and clicks of old and feel very... moon logic-y at points and be incredibly unclear on where to go or what to do, I found myself frequently using every item everywhere as there wasn't any clear area where to go next, or what to use. If you're a P&C veteran then that shouldn't be too hard for you (and assuredly there will be a guide wrote up somewhere to help progression but as of right now there isn't) , and it's free.
Why are my GPU and CPU fighting for their lives when this game is running? I can't even focus on the story and atmosphere with all the noise coming from the fans trying to cool the system and it's only text and images. I am aware it's free and you don't owe me ♥♥♥♥, but please, in your next project/game, either pick a different game engine or write more efficient code. The game looks interesting and I'd love to revisit it one day.
Ku ciemności Darkward to prosty, bo oparty jedynie o tekst, projekt, przypominający nieco przygodówkę PnC.

Awesome tone, artwork, and macabre essence. Got stuck near the end but eventually figured it out - 49/49, thanks to the devs for an amazing free game!
