Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/HoYm4KMoqqA This experience is approximately a little over an hour long. It's a narrative-driven sci-fi walking simulator. It's mostly an on rails experience with very easy puzzles and finally a difficult choice to be made at the very end where you'll get one of three different endings. Although the two endings I experienced are different, they also looked very similar. The most notable thing about this experience is that the main protagonist is Dominic Monaghan playing as himself in the future where he's an infamous former actor turned inventor to save the world from climate catastrophe. You must put your memories together to remember what's going on and what is your intended purpose. To that end, you basically walk around and touch the highlighted objects, which brings up an AR like screen. Game is running on the Unreal Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 frames per second, with only a frame drop here and there on high graphical settings. Beware though: game starts out on Low graphical settings and the screen is so blurry it's almost impossible to read. You have full locomotion and snap turning only. The snap turning is a bit too quick and you must depress it quickly. The VR interactions are clunky and could use a lot more polish. Overall, I thought the VOs were good. However, I thought the story lacked depth: there wasn't enough world-building and the characters were not fully developed. Honestly, the story seemed rushed. The puzzles were too easy as well and presented no challenge. The whole thing did feel low budget, but the price reflects that. In the end, I think you are getting more than your money's worth, especially with Dominic Monaghan starring (especially if you're a LOTR fan). Normally when you see that a Steam VR game is for Oculus Rift Only you should set your expectations to super-low. But WOW, did this game experience surprise me. Featuring the highly talented acting of Dominic Monaghan who I grew up with on TV shows like LOST and he is perfect for this experience. And that is exactly what this is, it is an interactive cinematic experience about someone suffering from memory loss thanks to an evil AI (no story spoilers here). Sure the graphics are not amazing, but given the small price point, I have to give this game a massive thumbs up! I do seriously think this game is a little too cheap for its own good especially because it is currently on sale as well. I would have been happy to recommend this even at full price. A big well done goes to the developers for this one, I loved every moment of it.
👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑

 Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
English: -------------------------------> Dark Threads is an interactive story from Cream Productions starring Dominic Monaghan. Dominic Monaghan is probably known to most from the series LOST or as the Hobbit in Lord of the Rings. In this sci-fi adventure, we take on the role of Dominic Monaghan, so to speak. We are an AI inventor in a not too distant dystophic future. Our task is once again to save humanity from total catastrophe. However, due to a software accident during the last transfer with our basically benevolent A.I. Rhea, some of our memories have all but disappeared and we are now trying to collect our thoughts. The A.I., spoken by Kandyse McClure (known from Battlestar Galactica), tries to help us at first. But we keep discovering clues that make us doubt Rhea's benevolent basic thought. But also our own avatar (our highly educated ego) doesn't always seem to tell the truth. So the story unfolds in conversations between the two of them and our actions. As we progress through the exciting story, we have to solve smaller puzzles from time to time; unfortunately, we are very much taken by the hand here and never get bogged down. The A.I. takes us into abstract thought worlds and mysterious places during the course of the story. Dark Threads is even supposed to have several endings ready. I've only played one ending so far that turned out positively for humanity, I think ..... We can certainly destroy the world too, or at least humanity. Graphically, Dark Threads is very descriptive. It looks great when you set the graphics setting to "High". The default setting is "Low", probably for small PCs. Turning up the supersampling rate had no effect. In the distance, the environment is always a bit blurry, but in detail, it usually looks very good. Even if not all objects have the same high resolution and not all are displayed in 3D. However, most objects often look familiar to the inclined VR player. We find few new assets here. But Mr. Monaghan has been captured really well, as he is not only the main character, but also the co-producer of the game. But why is the realistic Grafik changing into something like Comicstrip at the end of the game? The sound is also quite good and especially the dubbing voices are great spoken by the actors. However, only in English. Subtitles are available, but I did not have them set. In order to follow the story well, the player should have a good knowledge of English. Dark Threads runs smoothly, but the controls are a bit bumpy, but you get used to it. For example, we can climb on a couch, but later we can't climb stairs in the sand. I was even able to slide through closed doors, as I was wandering around the room a bit confusedly at the beginning of the story, trying things out. But when the progress of the story was triggered, the glitch was gone. Strange. Unfortunately, there are once again only very few objects with which we can interact, and they don't even lie properly in the hand, but float above the fingers. Doors can be opened manually, but drawers and the like are nailed down. I wish that in games like these, you could really interact with every object. Dark Threads is a short suspenseful sci-fi adventure movie starring Dominic Monaghan. It is fun to adventure "along" with Mr. Monaghan. A must see for fans. 👀Dark Threads on my curator page, unravel it. 👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
EDIT: Index is fully supported with full finger tracking. With the RTX 3090 and i9 10900K (10 cores) I get close to solid 90 fps using highest in-game settings and res 250% - but res 200% seems totally solid 90 fps. The game is somewhat blurry, so you will need as much res as possible. Textures are generally awesome and high-res - not Boneworks' ultramersion high-res, but close enough. OLD REVIEW - BASED ON RIFT CV1: This game or experience is 10/10 - if you have the rig to run it - and also a fully supported hmd. I recommend oled like Rift CV1. I really have no idea why the developers are giving this beyond awesome experience away for free - or close. The price could easily be $19.99 for what you get. The game isn't perfectly polished, but it's still more polished than many other similar experiences, just don't expect a perfectly polished game. The game did greatly impress me. In some of the larger and more open locations you do get an idea why this game may like a processor with 8 cores or more - some giant statues and monuments have awesome polygon counts. This is PCVR at its finest, not in all locations, but in many. Many textures are high-res and look realistic or close. I believe this is an Oculus Rift CV1 (=oled) game. And I still have the CV1 connected to my rig - and the game supports native Oculus drivers. Even using Rift CV1 ss 2.0 the game felt blurry, so I tried to max out ss by going to ss 2.5. That's 3344 x 3968 x 2 = 27 mill pixels per frame (both eyes), but I did get solid 90 fps thanks to my oc'ed RTX 3090. The game feels like an adventure game that could give some vibes from Under a Killing Moon or similar Blade Runner stuff. But it's also a walking simulator like ZED, but Dark Threads is much more advanced than ZED. Dark Threads has a heart and an agenda, and wins greatly in that perspective. In Dark Threads, you've lost your memory and need to find out who you are after having a brain implant. I'm looking forward to continue the game. The game does feel like much effort was put into it, standing next to Dominic Monaghan’s character is a great experience, and his face and clothes look great. Kandyse Mcclure is also constantly with you, as her voice is used for an AI floating next to you. There are great use of dynamic lights and shadows, which probably also is why devs recommend a RTX 2080 or better for this experience. For the current very low price you're getting so incredibly much more than you pay for. My rig: Asus Strix OC RTX 3090, i9 10900K (10 cores and 20 threads), 32GB 3200 MHz, 4TB SSD (Samsung EVO 860), Win10 Pro.
I've been in VR only a handful of times, but know one of the people who worked on this game and wanted to check it out. I'm definitely not a gamer and usually expect games to be gory and violent, this drama is really intriguing and definitely exceeded my expectations. I've only made it through the first act so far, as I'm very slow and have taken the time to explore all the objects from the comfort of my bed. It's my bedtime now, but I look forward to playing some more and finding out what's next. I'm really curious how this story will play out.
This game is graphically well done and has good voice acting. But, it feels more like you're part of a documentary than playing a game. The puzzles feel too guided, and there is an ongoing theme that feels like it's trying too hard to be a lesson. I really wanted to like it, but after 40 minutes I found myself bored and not wanting more. So, I've requested a refund. This is a well done game and may be for you, but it's not something I enjoyed.
Using the Vive Pro 2 and Oculus Quest 2 with the Air link to connect to Desktop. Works great for both Headsets. First thing you need to do when you start the game is set the games graphic setting to High to be able to read anything you may need in the game. Explore everywhere. Take your time so you do not miss anything. Game play is very Interesting and a Mystery needs to be solved, What the mystery is? I can not remember since my consciousness was transfer into a AI. What I can remember is the Game is great. 🤪 Excellent Price too. 🥴🤓👋
Well, this was a clunky experience. All interactable items have very narrow hitboxes, movement feels like you're moving through molasses and a black-fade while snapturning can't be turned off. > Every person you encounter may be an ally or enemy There was only one character and one AI to be met > Every potential clue may lead you closer to the truth or further down the rabbit hole You literally have to pick up every interactable items at points for the story to progress > And the decisions you make can change the final outcome But my decision at the end to deactivate the AI got completely ignored by the story > the threads you follow will either weave a story where you triumph… or forever unravel your entire consciousness Right at the end seems to be the only actual decision possibly, but no idea what the difference might be between uplink or downlink for the mind transfer or if I could’ve even progressed the story without changing that one thing that can be changed Overall it was *alright*, but fell far short from what it promised.
I tried to like this game, but I just couldn't. I had some weird lag issues with it, and I felt like I was being preached at. Like it was an educational thing. No real puzzles, not what I expected.
Dark Threads is a bleak yet perhaps realistic look at humanity's future. It is a short but compelling adventure that will leave you feeling like you want more. I would put this game in the walking sim category with light puzzles that should be easily solvable for most. I would love an expanded Dark Threads 2 with better movement, more interaction, harder puzzles, longer story, more choices and combat. I got it for I think 5.99 on release and it is well worth that price and still worth the normal price of 7.99. There were a few bugs but they were easy to overcome and some places the graphics were considerably worse than others (reflections and distant objects being the most obvious). Overall I really enjoyed my time in the game and I feel like it gets better the farther you get into it, I just wish it had more. It does have at least one alternate ending that I have not experienced so it does have some replay value. Played with reverb G2 and knuckles no problem.
