edit: price got even higher, so definitely wait for a sale. dark crypt is yet another pixely turn-based affair from the developer of hack grid and dark sheep, sharing the sinister tone of the latter. the protagonist is a priest-like creature, going deeper and deeper in a crypt, trying to avoid monsters, hoping to reach the bottom and seal whatever evil's about to awaken and kill everybody. it's basically a creepy hitman go, getting more and more disturbing as you progress. 6 floors hold 60 levels, unlocked one by one, with optional tutorial and story bits. each level has a par to beat if you're so inclined, and there are unlimited level skips and undo, so you can pick and mix if you want. there's a variety of monsters to get past (and if you don't, the place of your last death will be marked on the level, nice touch). basic skeletons are stationary and turn left/right or up/down after every turn, armored ones keep turning round and round, skelly mages cover two diagonal tiles, and vampires move in patterns. lost souls can actually be destroyed by breaking the gem they're tied to. the store page mentions boss fights, but they're rare and still turn-based and puzzly, only with a new but familiar mechanic. or a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying one on the last level. alternating spikes are also to be avoided, gates and doors have to be opened (pulling a lever or using a key counts as a move). vases add light sokoban elements to block line of sight, but teleportation is the main gimmick. after finding the magic cross early on, you can place a teleporter, then get back to it from anywhere with another keypress. normally it can be done once per level to sync up to monster patterns or get out of life-threatening situations, but as the story goes on, you'll find a way to 'recharge' it for the current stage, as well as another way of getting around unnoticed. keyboard and controller are supported, mouse only works in the menus. controls are rebindable, but the two default keysets were mostly fine. wasd/arrows to move, space/tab to teleport, z/y for undo (I changed it to backspace), r/b to restart, and there's a hotkey for the tutorial and the journal. movement keys and undo can be held to avoid repeated keypresses. graphics are medieval-like, as one would expect from a game taking place in a dungeon, nice enough if you like pixels. music is fitting as well, not for me though, even if they are renditions of classical compositions. separate volume settings, windowed mode with plenty of resolution options, some graphics settings (including a few to make things less dark and more visible), and the usual ui customization seen in the dev's other games (toggles for move counter, hotkeys, etc.). settings can be accessed while playing a level and there's an in-game representation of achievements. it's really good and difficult stuff, as usual. weirdly, I found the last floor easier than some of the earlier ones. for no apparent reason it used to cost as much as the dev's previous two games combined, then it quietly got even more expensive, so definitely wait for a sale and try the demo in the meantime.
We don't do Halloween where I'm from but I hear it's a thing in other parts of the world? Daisy Games has brought us another awesome puzzle game. It's not some gimmicky trash though - this is one very well thought-out game with some great level design and mechanics. A turn-based puzzle game that gets harder and harder as new obstacles and mechanics are introduced every few levels. The concept is simple but mastery is not. Love the pixel art. Fun & challenging. I took a liking at this guy's puzzles, each game is better than the last, and yet he has gone back to the previous games to add more levels / improve something important. This one is properly difficult which I like. His games add an ominous and creepy atmosphere through small bits of story that don't get in the way. I don't often see that in puzzle games like these.
Dark Crypt is a great game for those looking for spooky vibes, but aren’t necessarily interested in more aggressive horror elements and jump scares (or if you just need a break from them). It’s a turn-based stealth puzzle game that eases you into its gameplay. You’ll quickly gain a firm understanding of each concept it introduces before it ramps up the difficulty of its levels. Because Dark Crypt is turn-based, you’ll have time to think out your next move or moves, and if you make a wrong move, you have unlimited undos, or you can choose to restart the level. I loved sitting there thinking through a level for as long as I liked, and I loved the added complexity with each new enemy or obstacle. Definitely check this out if you’re looking for a stress-free spooky game!
This is a retro themed dungeon puzzler. It looks good, feels awesome and has a lot of interesting puzzles to solve. I started playing and managed to complete over 20 levels in one go. However, now the puzzles starts to get more difficult, but not impossible. I very much like that there is no wasting of time: you have unlimited undos and you can restart the level whenever you want. The focus is on solving the puzzles. The graphics are great and medieval dungeon orchestra creates this as a unique experience. I can highly recommend this game. I think the game is also very cheap and there is a demo that you can try, so you can't really go wrong with Dark Crypt. What an awesome game!
Great gameplay and atmosphere. Love it. Difficulty is just right.
I'm not that much of a puzzle game fan, but this one is simple (but not easy!) and gets increasingly challenging - but not unreasonably so. Each aspect is introduced fairly and you won't be overwhelmed with a million decisions. The background sound effects are very eerie and add a sense of atmosphere in a very simple art style (not to be confused with bad). The music will depend on taste, but it gave me prince of Persia back flashes. There is an option to turn it down or off if it's not your jam. Verdict: Definitely get, especially if you love puzzles, don't bother waiting for a sale. If you don't play puzzlers, at least Wishlist it and try it when there's a sale. It's game you can easily have open on the side while doing some boring work - and do a level as a treat.
Another lovely puzzle game. Really like the puzzle type and aesthetic of the game. It is really tricky and some levels are really tough to solve. Luckily there is a nice mechanic that let's you undo your move so you don't have to restart the whole level.
Dark Crpyt is a turn-based puzzler that draws comparisons to games like Lara Craft GO and Hitman GO. You make your way through a level without any enemies detecting you. The monsters and the environment around you, moves at each step you make. The story of Dark Crypt is very simple and straightforward. You are a priest who hopes to reach the bottom of the crypt to seal an ancient evil that is sleeping deep inside. In order to do so, you have to manage through all levels by sneaking through enemies and avoiding all traps that are laid out. There are 60 levels to go through in this game. The difficulty is fair and if by any chance that a level is too hard, you are free to skip it. The game doesn't have any limits when it comes to backtracking. You can take your time solving the puzzle without any pressure. A variety of monsters can be found in this game, and each has their own unique way of detecting you; from simple skeletons that only turns left/right or up/down up to complex monsters that moves in a pattern. Other than these monsters, there are also environmental hazards to keep an eye on. The main focus of this game is the ability to teleport to a position that you saved. This teleportation will help you trick the positioning of the monsters to get through the levels. This is a very fun puzzle game, specially at its price point. You will surely get your money's worth with the number of features and replayability of it. If you are unsure, feel free to try their demo to test it yourself. Damn, this is a smart game! Reminds me somewhat of the Lara Croft GO-Game, and also Hitman GO (whereas the latter was more Quantity than Quality) ... DARK CRYPT brings a Roguelike-Aesthetic to the table, but at it's heart it's still a Puzzler: it eases you into it's mechanics, every new obstacle has an introductory level, and then it combines them all together into a mindbending turn-based Stealth-Conundrum, where you have to navigate a spooky Dungeon and time your steps with the patterns of various Traps and Fiends, always having to think one step ahead. Great fun, and would recommend for every Puzzle-Afficionado, who doesn't mind their challenges dressed up with a little theme.
