To get this out of the way, I don't support censorship. It's why I didn't buy it until a fanmade patch was available. It's out for a while now, so I bought the game and finished reading it. It definitely did not disappoint. Case 1 felt like a modern romantic drama, I quite liked it. Rin was definitely a very memorable and fun character. But I can't really add anything else without spoilers. Case 2 was my favorite by far. Not only Olivia has an insane presence and an amazing character, pretty much all of the side characters were great and super fun. I even liked the male lead, Shakespeare here the most. How the characters in the trope became almost like a family by the end and improving, it was truly amazing to see the progress. But besides the story, what truly stole the show was how well Olivia and Shakespeare suited each other. The way they helped developing each other, fixing their weaknesses and bolstering their strengths left a big impression on me. Case 3 was decent, but the only thing I really liked was the friendship between Sumomo, Azuki and Kanna. It kinda felt like a summer adventure full of youth which I liked. Also interesting how it was in the same setting as another VN developed by the same studio, The Future Radio and the Artificial Pigeons. Now for Case 0. It had some ups and downs, with some unnecessary and very forced drama at some point and without spoilers. There were two things I didn't like. I can't say much without spoilers, but Yonagi having not only one, but two "misfortunes". And one of them was felt like it only needed to happen was to move the plot forward. The second is the ending. It's not exactly a bad ending, but it feels inconclusive. Admittedly, it does fit the title of the game nicely. But it left me wanting more, something beyond this. Perhaps a game in the future will help. For example, the setting in The Future Radio and the Artificial Pigeons actually is canon in this game and now we know what happens after with the state of the world. I can see why a decent amount of people call it a masterpiece. At the very least, this was an amazing read and definitely one of my favorites, even with some of my gripes. The writing is brilliant, how everything just comes together in Case 0 and how Case 1, 2 and 3 connects to Case 0. The female leads were amazing and a huge props to Asakawa Yuu, who voiced all 4 female leads, but had the vocal range to sound different enough to feel like they were different people. Rin is soft spoken, but with a harsh tongue at times, Olivia speaking in a loud, confident and clear voice, like a true theatric star and Sumomo like a cheeky, aloof gal who's honest about the things she likes and dislikes.
This made me ugly cry. A lot. Stellar storytelling, characters and soundtrack. While I'm praising the game, I'm mostly talking about its main course - Case 0, which is an emotional rollercoaster and one of the best pieces of fiction I've ever read. Interestingly enough, I found Steam version preferrable to 18+ patch which ruins emotional buildup of some scenes, its content feels out of place and tacked on. Also, Steam version seems to be preferred by the game's writer, which is pretty telling. Other than that? Peak fiction.
