I'm a simple person, I see a romanceable naga, I buy it.
Too slow and too repetitive.
This game is very time consuming yet, every time I advance the story I can help to keep on going even if it's late at night. The characters are well down the battles have difficulty choices so the game has setting for many types of gamers. I still not even half way through the game and I feel like I already got my money worth. I can't wait to see what happen next, who knows maybe you will take up your own adventure in this wonderful game.
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
Cursed Lands is an RPG/Visual Novel hybrid game by veteran developer Winter Wolves. Boasting both character customization and multiple romance options, the game also comes with a significant ($25 USD) price tag that is probably its biggest obstacle in gaining a wider audience. I want to be clear; a high price doesn't make a game bad, even an “indie” game. The cost of making a game is often not-insignificant, even for a small team. But once you pass that $20 threshold, particularly as a visual novel, you're held to a higher standard by the vast majority of gamers. That standard goes up even higher when your game is over four years old and still being sold at full price, when I can literally go onto the Playstation store and buy a big-budget AAA game that released two years ago and pay even less. Once you've picked your class and race, along with some fairly limited cosmetic options, you're off on a quick tutorial and then thrown into the meat of the game. The art is..well, not great. It's not terrible, but it's very generic. Sure, it's better than what I can draw, but I'd expect that; they're charging $25 for this game. The music is...well, once again, not great. It's not terrible, but it's very generic. It's exactly what you picture when you think “Ye Olde Background Musick”. It's honestly on-par with something that I could whip up in AcidPro or another music maker software program in about a day at most. The writing is..well, not great. It's not terrible, but it's got an odd cadence to the way it reads. It's almost too wordy, like every character wants to go on a monologue about things, like a game reviewer trying to pad his word count after playing through a game that looked great on paper, but isn't living up to its price point. Also, the lack of voice acting is definitely an issue, given that far cheaper games offer voice acting. At the price point they're asking, its absence is noticeable. There's selectable difficulty, from Visual Novel (no combat) all the way up to hard combat. The combat is passable, but like most aspects of the game, it's generic. It's a shame, because if you go the no combat route, the narrative gets a little wonky due to skipping the battles. The bulk of the game has you going from location to location, and this is when the pacing issues start. You'll find that the game initially throws a lot of stuff at you, and then suddenly it dries up. I honestly wondered if I'd encountered a glitch because I had three weeks to go before a major plot beat (you literally play through each day manually) and there was NOTHING going on, besides three optional battles in the arena to grind. The game actually popped a tooltip up and said this was normal, and that if I “rushed” the plot content, I could just do arena battles or keep ending the day until something popped. This leads to a level of tedium where you're basically waiting for “the good part” of the game. (Trust me, the combat is not what anyone would call “the good part”.) And so, what we're left with is a game that's complete, but glaringly mediocre. The plot grinds to a halt almost arbitrarily, and you don't know when it's going to resume. It's a baffling design choice that I don't understand. The game's not terrible, just aggressively mediocre. Every time you find a plot thread that maybe hooks you, the game slams on the brakes. You'll eventually see it through, but on the game's schedule, not your own. It's also worth pointing out the “romantic” options in the game. There's several for you to choose from, and one of the selling points of the game is that you don't get locked into a single person, and can basically be “Ye Olde Gigolo”. You can often figure out which characters are romance-eligible very easily; the game telegraphs them pretty transparently. The thing is, it feels very hollow, like you're just ticking off objectives on a list, because you have almost no control over how the romance develops. Part of this is because there's so many options that none have been given that extra level of detail. Part of it's because the writing is so average. And part of it is because the game almost seems to WANT you to feel this way, so you get to have more intimate moments. In a VN that wants to have a romantic plot, I would rather have three well-written choices that have weight, as opposed to ten that have none. I feel like it's a cop out for me to tell you to play the demo first, but how much you can tolerate their narrative style and artistic direction is going to determine whether this one's for you. However, I definitely feel that while this game gets a thumbs-up for being complete and a bit of a time sink, you need to wait for it to go on sale to truly make it worth the purchase. The content is simply a case of quantity over quality.
A very well made and large game, particularly given the size of the dev team and quality of the work. There are some flaws in pacing and some imbalances in character power relative to each other as well as an unfortunate limit to the number of characters playable at a given time in action sequences but the game is confident, smooth and displays an attention to craft that is rare from large dev teams such as at major companies
One of the best games I've played in this genre.
Considering the hours I put into this vn, its probably a shock that I don't recommend it. Well, read it and weep, because all those hours, and I still haven't finished it! Normally, if I'm reviewing a game or visual novel, I want to give positives and negatives, but I can't really do that here. The things I would've categorised as a positive, feel more mediocre than anything. The story (up to the point I gave up trying, and I'll explain why) wasn't too bad, and if I could get over my pet peeves, I'd have read it, but.... The combat. I'm no stranger to turn-based, and I enjoy it when done right, but it just wasn't fun. Someone left a review that it feels like this was meant to be played on visual novel mode, and I couldn't deny that. It feels like it was thrown in as an after-thought. The character creation... Well, let's just say'; DAO this is not. An impossible standard for a visual novel to hit, I know but given that combat was a part of it, and character creation, I suppose I expected a little more depth. You pick one of the species, a background for the mc, but all it does is change the dialogue slightly; not enough to replay it if someone manages to make it through once. Finally, and my biggest issue; the romance. The RO options weren't even the problem, but I constantly found myself being confessed to by every available love interest; I was thankful that there were some that weren't attracted to a certain gender, at least they didn't fall head over heels seemingly out of no where! This is the reason I put in so many hours. I had to replay it and choose the least friendly option for everyone except the person I was interested in... This shouldn't be a problem, but a lot of time it felt I had to pick between like a standard, CIVIL response, or a downright nasty one. There's a part where you either choose to forgive a mistake, or completely chew the person out. Most of the time, I was just doing 50/50 with my responses so I didn't lose those party members, but also so they didn't see it as a romantic invitation; if I behaved like this with my friends, I wouldn't have any... After changing my attitude as quick as the weather, switching between luke warm and freezing cold, I finally secured my intended RO... and it still didn't work. Still had to let someone down because apparently I was still being too nice. Ultimately, even if it had worked, the payoff wouldn't have been nearly as rewarding since my mc had to tip-toe through a landmine of thirsty romance options just to be there. It felt like those story games on your phone, where the nicer and sometimes civil option is locked behind money whereas the savage, bridge-burning option was completely free; but this isn't a game steeped in micro-transactions. It continuously baffled me that there was no third option to at least lock you out of romances you weren't interested in, BEFORE they confessed their undying love... Have you ever tried to turn down a marriage proposal from someone, because they took your offer to make them tea as a lifelong commitment? Can you imagine how awkward that would be, for both parties? This scenario doesn't happen in the game, but that's how it felt. I still haven't finished Cursed Lands, and there's a decent chance I never will. Maybe it's unfair to review it when I haven't completed it, but these problems, mainly the romance, are the reasons I won't. Sometimes I leave games for a while, but if I have an interest, or I find redeeming qualities; I'll play it through to the end. That never really happened with Cursed lands. Any time I think about playing it all the way through, I'm reminded of the weird tip-toeing game I have to play with the romances and immediately put-off.
This is a much better game than the last one I played from the same developers . The characters are interesting, their subplots are simple but compelling, and they have depth to them. It's not an un-fun game for about 65-70% of it. The other 30-35% suffers from the same issue as the other game from the same studio: There's literally just not enough content. Both games have a time-passing mechanic, but there are far too many time segments (days in this one, weeks in the other) where there's literally just nothing left to do before you hit the countdown for the next main story event. These guys need to learn to condense their stories so that you're not just hitting 'skip' over and over again once you've exhausted all the possible scenes in the act. Again, I enjoyed this game, but I'll probably not play another from this team because this has happened both times, very blatantly.
Fun story, interesting companions. The day-by-day-mechanics can get very grindy, often there's nothing to do but advance several days forward hoping the next story event will trigger. I'm glad none of the other games seem to have this.
