UPDATE 2025: GAME now is running OK up to Lvl10 at least. NEW 'feature": Achievements NOT unlocking. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Bugs, bugs, bugs everywhere. [2/10] My older review:
Yeah, so, the game feels really good and it's fun but it's seriously bugged. It resets progress everytime you exit. If you keep registry settings and restore them, there's another bug further ahead since you cannot spend any accumulated points . Also level-5 boss is bugged to the point i've almost killed it and suddenly disappeared from the screen. It's a pity. UPDATE 2024: GAME STILL BUGGY, DEPOT IS NOT UPDATED.
fun litle game great sountrack also
"Cubyte" is a very poorly made, minimalist top down/maze shooter where you control a minimalist 2D blob and do some pretty mediocre shooting through some 2D minimalist blob environments. To think this was published on Steam the same year as Black Myth: Wukong. That's the state of amateur game development. I wonder why this was such a huge failure on Steam? Let's go over some reasons. So this looks like an old 1990's Adobe Flash game that you might play in a web browser, and the problem there is obviously Steam wasn't intended to try compete with Chrome and Firefox. If it can be done in a web browser, it's not even close to a cutting edge PC gaming experience. That's a problem. This feels more like a tech demo or a project smacked together hurriedly to try make a kind of minimum viable product just good enough to pass the developers unambitious idea and shove it into Steam Direct to see if you can actually pay and publish junk through Steam Direct. Yeah, you can. Is this good for gamers? Nope. This game features very lacklustre minimalist "art" for graphics instead of anything remotely contemporary. I'm sure the "developer" thought this would come across as "artistic", but it doesn't, it comes across as "really lazy". Yes, contemporary 3D graphics take a lot of time and effort to create. That doesn't mean it's okay not to bother! Developers must try to understand that gaming is a visual medium, and gamers spend a lot of money on high end gaming rigs for a reason. And that reason is not so they can look at lazy, phoned-in half efforts like this. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $2 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 10 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Given that this free title won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? This is a hard pass. There's no immediate financial commitment, but there are thousands of more compelling games on the platform that will give you a lot more enjoyment for your time.
The game had a nice cozy vibe... it reminded me of the flash games back in the good ol days. Definitely was nostalgic.
