About
Cricket: Jae's Really Peculiar Game is a hand-animated JRPG from Studio Kumiho about loss, loneliness, friendship, and the weird adventures you and your friends got up to.
After a devastating loss, Jae would do anything to fix the past. Blast off with him and his friends on a journey to the gates of Yimmelia, a fabled land on the moon that’s rumored to grant any wish.
This is a modern JRPG inspired by classics, but trims the fat. No grinding. No random encounters. You’ll explore forests, cities, rock concerts and more, with traversal that is always fun and dynamic; you can dash and charge into objects (and people!) just to see what happens. How you treat the NPCs, or annoy them, will influence game events and combat.
Combat incorporates timed hits, with special combinations as you team up with amazing party members. Build the meter, attack and defend, and unleash awesome combos for better rewards!
Traverse forests, explore cities, ruin a rock concert, and crash a fandom convention, all while throwing your JRPG expectations out the window. Experience a modernized take on the genre: no random encounters, a sprint feature, headbutting, and no grinding!
Recruit and travel with five new friends, customize your battle experience with six playable characters, and nail your timed hits to build your meter. Wreck your opponents by unleashing powerful duo and trio attacks! The better you do in combat, the better the loot: more XP, more items, more money!
Freely interact with NPCs during conversations: stand there and listen to them gab, throw items at them, or just walk away! But remember: your actions have consequences, how you treat people in this world affects combat.
Consult with your party members about your surroundings, how to beat enemies, or just to check in on your pals. Dive into the chaotic and overlapping dialogue featuring irreverent conversations and scenarios. You never know what'll happen next!
Full, all-new OST composed by Shane Mesa and Tomoya Tomita!

When PAXWest made a return in person during COVID, this game was actually the only game that stood out to me. Every year I'd always come by and check on this game. from the first impression, this game stuck with me through its narrative and character design. Jimmy (main dev of Kumiho) was always welcoming and I've always been excited to ask more questions and also nerd out about Mario RPG and other inspirations that inspired this game's existence. Now I've finally played the full game, I'mma give my full honest review of this game: I can see how personal this game truly is. The Dialogue, the characters, the story. Everything gives off that personal inner childhood trauma that has to be expressed in an art form of some kind like a movie or novel. Video Game? that too, even if it takes a half a decade long to come up and make (plus fixes and patches). nevertheless it was beautifully written top to bottom. Funny, sad, and thrilling all at once. this game can be VERY self aware and throws a good enough amount of satire at you that does hit. Couldn't stop playing this game because I wanted to know what happens next. captivating story! Animation and art is chef's kiss, got nothing else to say. all positives here. Character designs are something any AAA or AAAA game company should take note of... don't just make a character for the sake of trying to check boxes, make a character we can remember and relate even if we don't match certain qualities. each character has a story and their own struggles that fit their personalities that's worth giving a damn. If I were to pick a favorite, I'd give it to Twila. a wise outcast trying to socially reconnect with people despite her walls built up from past trauma having to binge anime to get her mind off of it. not a story seen in a lot of characters which stood out very relatable to me personally. Was only given little info about her in the PAX demos but full story really surprised me in full circle. Eventually you'll see how everyone is unique and will find someone to relate to. Backgrounds are 1 thing, the story and lore is another. Take notes from this folks. Gameplay and combat was amazing. loved the layout and the different fonts for each character. The team combos were VERY fun to experiment and see all the different animations. Tho I will say it felt very unnecessary to go very hard with having 3 person combos, nearly made the game feel easy (ok I've been a B button Believer so that could also be why), but I'll hand it to ya, really had fun exploring all the combos! Also Zack is a BEAST! Playing the whole game, I felt like there could be more, not the story itself I think it was paced solidly; although looked a bit rushed in a few parts, was hoping for some reprisal matches. Perhaps a few small side quests that can give characters some stronger equipment and maybe a bit more lore. sure we can search the whole map for equipment and tokens but it gets a bit repetitive at times to search for hidden cookie boxes while sections get bigger and bigger making it easy to get lost at times. Those are the only cons I have. OH! Also the WIN button I was laughing you forgot to patch it out, tried to avoid using it as much as possible but I did use it on mainly the repetitive encounters. I agree with the reviewers, that there should be a difficulty option so maybe the WIN button can be an option in Easy mode while normal or hard can't have that option. Overall, I am glad I have met you and the team, Jimmy. I love this game, I love the passion and strive you have, I can't wait for what you have planned next. and I hope people actually give this game a try. This game deserves to be seen. Good Luck with everything!
I've played about 4.3 hours of this game and i have a weird feeling this game was made for kids. With that said it seems very liberal and seems to be aimed at an audience that im not a part of. Pros: Headbanging horses A turn based combat system that is middle of the road. Not bad and not great aka good Artwork and sharkwork Cons: woke cast that at one point yells pronouns at you Very easy as an adult to get bored quickly in the story Screen tearing which i think the devs will workout with a patch at some point Overall, I tried to get through the game to get the full experience, but i just found myself not having fun with the game. I hope this game can find its audience, but I just don't enjoy it.
Fun JRPG with plenty of emotional beats and a lotta heart. Gameplay opens up a bit more once you have a full party and can do more combination attacks to get through battles quicker. Music and art are pretty good.
I could not recommend this game enough! The gameplay is simple but still engaging, the characters are extremely lovable, the dialogue is hilarious, and the mood has a good blend of humor, seriousness, and sadness. The subject of the story may hit very close to home for some, including myself, but it is handled in such a careful and honest way. Overall, I had a lot of fun with this game and feel richer for having experienced this story. :)
A cute little game about knowing who your real friends are in times of need. Also traffic cones make for great bludgeons.
Little bit of inspiration from Super Mario RPG Legend of the 7 Stars, Bravely Default, and Mother (Earth ound). Quirky, cute, fun combat, just enough challenge to not be boring but not too difficult.
I wanted to like it so bad. I’m about 6-7 hrs in. Maybe I’ll try again another time, but it’s too slow. Battles are slow, dialogue, while occasionally fun or clever, is mostly boring. Just feels boring to play with nice graphics and obviously a nice little kid group story. Hopefully I pick it up again later and like it. I’ll change my review if that scenario happens.
I had the opportunity to play the demo at pax many years ago and enjoyed it. I asked them when it would release and they told me 2023. I remember thinking that'll be forever. Now that its here I can officially say this game rocks! There is so much character within each and every fiber in this game. I had a blast joining these guys are on this amazing peculiar adventure. The game play was phenomenal with great paced action and comedy. The RPG fighting system reminds me a little of the Mario and Luigi series with the timed hits. I played the entire game on my steam deck and it ran amazingly. If you are looking for a great game to play on your steam deck i fully recommend.
It's been a while since I enjoyed a new game that much. I really liked the fight mechanics and the dynamic between the characters. It's a fun and charming simple RPG.
