So far this game is solid, the mechanics are interesting and the level design doesn't get stale. It's not necessarily the most unique game ever, but the boomerang, which is the main part of your moveset along with your double jump, keeps things fresh and gives an interesting spin to all the mechanics. The movement / controls feel good as well. Do note that this game has a few boss fights, and they can be pretty demanding, they're not your gimmicky puzzle platformer style bosses, and they're not celeste platforming sequences, they are more akin to hollow knight or dark souls fights. They are punishing since you die in one hit, so you're forced to learn all the attacks of the boss to beat them. Just know that they are a legitimate challenge, need you to get good, and are a bit of a difficulty spike from the rest of the game. Treat them like dark souls bosses, although probably not as hard. Story is well written, but don't expect crazy plot things to happen or anything, it's mostly about the relationships and struggles between the characters. But it's still executed well and the characters have quite the designs! Only negative I'll say is the game is capped at 60 fps, but for this type of game it's not too bad. Overall I'd say if you like precision platformers like celeste or you've played something like mario maker, this will be right up your alley. Cool music too.
This game is very addicting and fun. Almost every level introduces a new mechanic or gimmick keeping it constantly feeling fresh throughout the whole wacky adventure. After beating each level you will have a short break from the intense gameplay to take in a humorous and bittersweet story with characters full of personality. The movement in this game is more complex than meets the eye just like Celeste. Sometimes you can pull off a sweet manoeuvre that makes you feel like you just cheated the developer's intended way to beat a section, which feels very addicting but don't be fooled, the level design in this game is intentional and well-constructed for both a casual play through using the bare minimum mechanics or a competitive leader board driven play through using the mechanics of the game creatively to get more efficient. This game might be challenging for some people but it's completely accessible with several difficulty modifiers. there are also several checkpoints within every level and you re-spawn at the start of the screen that you died, meaning the game should never feel too frustrating but more of an "I can't put the controller down until I get this checkpoint." level of addicting-fun. Speaking of controller this game works way better than I thought when looking at the trailers. Aiming a boomerang throw on the controller feels super natural with an almost flawless aim assist that aims based on the direction that you're moving. however, aim assist might take the fun out for some people so consider playing with a keyboard & mouse if you want the more intended boomerang mechanic. This game could also be too easy for a small handful of people, but there are some tough-level challenges, alternate cookie routes, leaderboards, and steam achievements to go after if you want more of a challenge. This is one of the most fun platformer games I've played and is 100% worth the money! What are you waiting for? Go buy it now!
Cosmic Pebble is a game with a very pleasantly surprising story. While looks can be deceiving (regarding to the artstyle some people might consider weak or low effort), this game is actually really well polished and the 6 years of work put into it really show. The gameplay is addicting and pushes you to find different ways of beating levels or sections of levels for that matter. You do have the cookie element which has you coming back to the game again and again, and as a completionist all of the outfits and unlockable items are a big plus! TL;DR: this is a great game, made by a small developer, with a great story and equally good gameplay!
The developer of this game was kind enough to give me a code for this game for my birthday, and I had nothing but fun playing it. Everything in this game just screams passion and care, the way everything looks, sounds and feels, down to the last minute detail. It's a really amazing platformer. I never felt that any death was due to bad coding or bugs/glitches or the game just being unfair. It's a challenging but fun experience all the way through and I would do nothing but recommend it to all platformer lovers. Without spoiling much, the story and especially the ending really touched me. It felt personal, tragic but uplifting, and overall it was amazingly done. The skill expression in this game is insane, all the movement is very polished and feels fluid to control. I really like this game and will be playing it more in the future. I would recommend it to basically anyone who has a slight interest in 2D platformers. Even those who might have disabilities or issues, can enjoy the story with a variety of accessibility options, always available. It goes to show the time and effort that went into this game, I don't know if I can find a single thing I dislike about it. I am very thankful for the developer for gifting the game to me, because I don't know if I would've bought the game otherwise. But going through and experiencing it for myself I cannot recommend it enough. This was the best birthday gift ever.
xoxo
Cosmic Pebble is a precision platformer with a captivating story about disability. The platforming mechanics are solid. The game introduces new mechanics with each level and the further you progress the more challenging it gets. What makes this game unique is that you have to jump and aim your trusty boomerang (often simultaniously) to traverse the levels. There's 2 difficulty options. Challenging is for those who are experienced with platformers. Easy is for those who just want to experience the story and want a more forgiving experience. The game is playable with both mouse & keyboard and controller, the latter being the more forgiving way to play the game. On mouse & keyboard you have to manually aim your boomerang to hit buttons etc. while on controller you have autoaim which makes certain sections way less challenging. To avoid getting into spoilers about the story I'll give some general impressions. The game has a likeable cast of characters each with their own unique personality. The story sections occur mainly between levels in the game's main hub where you can see the main protagonist Sophia interact with the other characters. The dialogue is engaging, thought-provoking and at times even humerous. There is optional dialogue for those who seek to learn more about the characters and the world's lore. The soundtrack for the game is great. Each track fits the level's theme well and there isn't a single track that I didn't like. The music just makes you keep going even when you're stuck in a difficult section of a level. Overall I enjoyed my time with the game and I can definitely recommend it to anyone who is into precision platformers and/or wants to experience a good story.
If you like this sort of game I think this one is executed well. It can be hard at some points so expect to die a bunch, but the game feels fair and the controls make you feel like it's your fault. I really liked the characters and the story as well, it was so cute and wholesome at times and was simple but well written. Don't wanna spoil but it gets pretty serious by the end, but I really really liked it! Also there are speed leaderboards and you can even see the dev on the leaderboards (the name of the dev is a different color), so that gives something to chase even after doing all the main content (idk how to even get those times lol) Really good game! Worth the price imo
What an enjoyable little game this was! I was originally made aware of this game months before release by a YouTube video the developer posted regarding their experience writing this game's story which found its way into my recommended feed. I thought the video was really interesting, and it encouraged me to add the game to my wishlist despite precision platformers not being my typical genre of choice. I'm really happy that I gave this one a shot, because the final product is a cute and charming romp with some memorable moments. The platforming feels (mostly) tight, new mechanics are regularly introduced throughout the story to keep things fresh, and there are plenty of cookies (this game's equivalent of Celeste strawberries) on each level to give you that extra challenge if you're looking for it. Most of the levels also have an additional challenge which you can complete which seem really tough, which also adds some replay value for those dedicated to achieve 100%. I want to give a special shoutout to this game's narrative. For a plot essentially added as a bonus to a gameplay-first platformer like this, I found the story to be really quite solid. The characters are likeable, the comedy is decent, and there's even some philosophy discussed, which I love to see. It also covers some pretty serious topics, but does so with tact and doesn't feel like it's forcing it too hard. I found myself actually looking forward to seeing where the narrative would go. Is the game perfect? Certainly not. The art does have a style to it and isn't terrible by any means, but definitely feels amateurish. The music is passable but nothing special. I did encounter some weird bugs and annoyances with the controls, as I feel the boomerang can be unpredictable at times. There were also several instances where my spawn point would randomly appear in the previous room, making me redo some sections I had already completed. I also feel like the game struggles a bit with visual clarity, as it often can be hard to tell which walls are safe to touch and which ones aren't, in my opinion. But these didn't do enough to significantly impact my experience, and most bugs were easily worked around. I'm a pretty casual player, and it took me just under 7 hours to beat the entire story with around half of the possible cookies. For $4.99, you really can't go wrong. I'd also like to note that I played the entirety of this game on my Steam Deck and ran into no issues, with no special setup required.
Cosmic Pebble is honestly such a good game, it just feels so good to play. Right now I have 85 hours in my main save file, but in a few weeks it's probably more then 100. The gameplay is very fun and never boring, with all the cookies to collect and the secret strategies to find. All the achievements where fun to get, even the hardest ones. I will always love this game.
Why are the danger areas almost the exact same shade of red as the land they're attached to? For a game about disability you haven't done many favors to those who need a little contrast between safe spots and non-safe spots in order to tell them apart. I really want to give this game a proper try because there's a lot I like about it, but I'm not going to force myself to navigate a slippery character through poorly-marked hazards just to experience the music and story.
this made me end my edging steak fr couldnt hold it in when I saw it finally dropped
