Monolith

Obrovská škoda, že Condemned 2 na Steame nevyšiel. Jednotka sa mi extrémne páčila a hlavne kvôli atmosfére. Príbeh sice troška klišé ale inak super.
Casted into oblivion
We live in an unfair and cruel world. A world where studios are forced to work on projects in genres they are unfamiliar with. A world where quality of your product matters less than its player retention. A world where if your game doesn't earn all the money in the world you will be highly considered for termination. Best studios suffer under the wing of corporate entities. Monolith was one of them. Condemned holds a very special place in my heart due to how unique and different it is from anything that was made before or even these days in general. Monolith weaponized common fears of ordinary folk to deliver an unnerving and paranoid inducing experience that ajoins tactical and punishing melee based combat in a slow burning thriller similar to movies like Seven or Silence of the Lambs. The only thing similar that we have is David Szymanski's Butcher's Creek, which is a bite-sized homage to Condemned. Obviously these days indie studios took mundane horror by storm, you'll probably find dozens of titles like that on Steam. But in those you are always powerless and vulnerable while in Condemned becoming the most efficient maniac is a survival strategy. I find this design decision bald, because in the process of knocking out teeth and snapping necks you can find yourself comfortable, powerful, in control. Which works in the narrative, but it wouldn't be Monolith if they didn't constantly pull the rug from under you. Metro City draws the picture of complete economical decay. The most vulnerable tearing everything apart seemingly without reason. Atrocities like drug abuse, stalking, kidnapping, police brutality and murder are rampant. Presence of something big and sinister can be felt all around. And you are thrown right in the middle of it. But unlike say Gotham City from Batman or Detroit from RoboCop there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You are not saving the city or bringing the end to mindless violence, you are just trying to survive by doing what you do best, just to make one screwed up thing right. While modern audience is getting scared of empty rooms and big toys, back in the days we were getting scared of a homeless crack addict with 2x4 in the dark alleyway. Now that's real horror right there. And that's not even touching the supernatural elements game evokes (I refuse to take explanation from Condemned 2 that game is terrible, holy). What saddens me the most is the absolute lack of acknowledgement. We live in the world of remakes and remasters, and Condemned was not only forgotten by the big ones, they want to make us forget too by removing the ability to buy this game. Now, I don't need RE2-type remake, but give it to someone like Nightdive to remaster. Or at least collaborate with GOG to preserve this cult classic. I already own a physical copy of it, but it's only me. Please bring Condemned back.
Great game. Came back to it after abandoning it a few years ago and discovered it is a masterclass at atmospheric horror, very similarly to Outlast. It's grimy, janky and definitely not made for modern systems but it's so charming and immersive. Melee combat is quite basic but very fun, as is ranged combat. Story is interesting and keeps you guessing. The mystery is great and the level design is superb. I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Sad that it got delisted, I think this would get a lot of attention if it got re-released.
No longer available from steam store? good riddance, the port is awful and so is this slog fest.
One of the all time greats. NOW BRING BACK PART 2!!!!!!

A game that has sadly not aged as graciously as I would've hoped. Though it has some interesting ideas and a few effective scares, with the mall level being a highlight, it quickly devolves into generic hallways with repetitive enemies and combat encounters. It's not terrible by any means, and the story is quite decent to follow along to, but by the end I just found myself wishing it would be over.
