My video review here: https://youtu.be/9hPql4TwSs0 Few positive: I liked the weapons sound and the pistols, the unlockable weapons/gadget with XP progression and the player customisation. HOWEVER Bearing in mind it is in Early Access, I expected something better from the trailer. For me was Totally unplayable. Even my RTX 3090 couldn't keep 90 FPS with settings all on low. Stuttering, Awkward weapon handling, No VR comfort options (e.g. snap turn, nor the possibility of hiding your body etc). Absolutely Terrible. Needs lots of work.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my initial impressions review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/CPjODCAa0ns This is definitely better than the average VR shooter. However, let's face it, the average PCVR shooter is pretty bad. I would say this game is okay, especially for a game that just came out a little while ago in Early Access. It is encouraging that the developers have added two major updates since release. If they keep working on this game, it could be good in the future. I bought this game because I was curious after this game received several negative reviews upon release. Currently, this game is single player only, but online multiplayer is planned for the future. I think this type of game would be more fun with friends. The friendly bots / enemy bots aren't very good to go against. The missions are also pretty basic. There's currently 9 maps although about half are just night variants. There's 4 difficulty levels. I played this game on normal (soldier) difficulty. You have a tutorial, along with a shooting range & explosives range. You basically go in the map, shoot to kill all enemies. Destroy certain enemy vehicles that are vacant and watch out for any moving enemy vehicles (which you can try to destroy or get away from). The oddest thing about this game is that you have a very obtrusive HUD. This HUD highlights where enemies are, as long as they have fired in your general direction. It also highlights friendly bots. It can otherwise be very difficult to tell enemy from foe, except for some maps where the different sides are clearly marked. The other odd thing is that many things are highlighted for you, like friendly bots are highlighted blue or enemies red, if they are close enough. The inventory system is also very odd and will take some getting used to. Game is running on the Unreal Engine. On mostly high graphical settings, on my RTX 3080, I was getting mostly 90 fps. You do have full locomotion, along with smooth or snap turning. You can press a button to jump and you'll need it to get around since you can easily get stuck in the terrain. I found I had to jump to get through some doors that were open. You can technically play this game seated, but the inventory system gets in the way more, and you need to manually crouch which doesn't really work well when playing seated. Overall, this game is okay, especially for Early Access. So far, the devs have been updating the game, which is nice. That's the major reason I bought this game. However, I wouldn't say it's a good game. It's just better than your average VR shooter. I would say this game is not as good as Zero Caliber, but that's game's been out for several years now and this game was just released a few months ago. It's got potential to be good. Rate 6/10. I bought to support devs who have been updating the game. It's a risk though because that doesn't always continue. I can only imagine that sales haven't been great so I appreciate what the devs have done, but it's no guarantee that it will be the case several months from now.
If you enjoyed my review, please consider joining my Steam Curator Group. I felt the need to write a quick review for this game. I will be honest. I purchased this game in hopes that it would be updated. I gambled. However, the developer is listening to the community. When i first purchased the game, the grip system was BAD, really really bad! Since then it has been updated and modified. So much so, that the game plays different, and the controls feel fixed. I can now recommend this game, and I hope that more people purchase and play it. It needs the attention of the steam community. This game gives me Battlefield vibes! Well done developer, please keep up the good work! I am having fun playing this now! Update: Seems updates are forthcoming almost everyday!
Combat Troops, A game along the line of Contractors VR, a bit of Zero Caliber VR and Dragon Rising. Well if you would mix those three games into one, it could be something like Combat Troops. The game aims for a pseudo realistic setting, without flooding the gamer with countless numbers of enemies that try to rush you. Instead it aims for a more calm, but quick reaction approach. The number of viable threats is kept to a manageable level. This means that danger is present, but you're able to adapt. As long as you know what you're doing. So far I don't think Combat Troops is a bad game at all. The graphics are good, the sound is satisfying and the weapon handling and combat is rewarding enough to keep the average gamer playing. Objective driven missions on semi open maps allow for a certain degree of freedom and ad to the replay value. A ranking system and unlocks do the rest. Some small things could be adjusted, or better explained, but in general I find this game very well worth its current price. Combat Troops is not a military simulator by any means, but it does give you a nice mix between realism when it comes down to the type of weapons etc. and gaming in VR as a soldier on a modern battlefield. The setup I use: PICO 4 with Virtual Desktop and Steam VR. (Works just fine)
Combat Troops VR is a face paced FPS, with lots of customizations and nice size open interactive maps. The game is single player and online multiplayer, this review is looking at the single player component of the game. I find a lot of FPS multiplayer games, are great to play online, but suck when it comes to the single player side. This game though shows a strong single player game. Where you can still make progress to level up and the AI system is great. You won't feel like you are the only player making progress on the mission and the enemies flank you and have a good shot. The game had a wide selection of weapons to pick from. Everything from melee, range and explosives. The game also has lots of attachments you can add to your guns, like laser sights, scopes of all sorts, handles and more. You can even change the skin of each gun to suite your image. There is also a good selection of gear to wear on your character, which is also customizable in look. You can make your character look unique and to your play style. The movement is smooth locomotion mixed in with roomscale movements. This took a bit to get use to, but really added to the immersion of the game. Shooting and taking cover felt really good and each weapon felt different in its firing actions. One thing I did not like is the weapon and item interaction. The game features a grab system where you need to open a menu to pick what your next action with the weapon or item will be. This was a pain and slowed down what is a fast paced game. I would of like to have the option for all hand movements to interact with the weapons and items and able to store weapons on your side and back. Over all the single player game was great. I felt challenged and had my AI buddies watch my back and save me a few times. This made the gameplay a lot of fun and i did not feel like I was the only one with skills. The maps are a great size and interactive. From going into buildings, climbing ladders and exploding items in the world. Also the cover system behind objects was nice. No enemy bullets went through the rocks I was crouched behind or made any type of magical curve to hit me. I felt like I was behind an actual wall as I crouched down in really life with my back to a wall that was not really there and peaked around for a shot or two. The game was immersive and kept my system pounding to the action. The game is still in early access, and could use some polish here and there and a better weapon handling system, but its coming out with a lot of strong points as well. I can not speak for the multiplayer part of the game, but I had a lot of fun in the single player game and would recommend it to anyone looking for online fun with an AI system.
An immersive milsim that leans more arcade-like. Very fun and pretty impressive!
Combat Troops VR plays like if you took Call of Duty and injected it with Arma. It is sort of like a VR version of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. The gameplay is quite fast and furious while there are quite a bit of mechanics and lots of guns in the game. --- The Visuals --- The graphics are nothing to run home to mom about, but they are decent. They have that sort of 'indie' style to them, but they are consistent so nothing does not seem out of place. --- Sound Effects --- However, the sound effects, this is where the game really shines. The sound effects definitely make you feel that you are in a hot zone on the battlefield. The helicopters and jets flying over head are probably some of the most realistic sounds I have heard in a game. The jets are so loud and deafening which really adds to the immersion. The sound effects for the weapons are very good too! Major kudos to the developer in the audio department! --- The Gameplay --- What does this game play like? You have 10 maps and each map gives you objectives via a PDA. Mainly the objectives are destroy targets, kill enemies, and go to the evac zone to leave the map. They are basic, but it works here. You really do feel like a soldier on a battlefield and I could say this could be used as a PTSD simulator. lol. You are ambushed everywhere it seems by enemies. --- Grenades --- There is another area in this game that truly impressed me. That is with the grenades. The grenades in this game are VERY realistic. They way they are thrown, and bounce on surfaces are done so realistically. Plus the sound effects of the bouncing of the grenades sound very realistic. Enemies throw these, so hearing a grenade land near you adds to the PTSD factor, lol. Be warned, the blast area of the grenades are pretty large, so if you hear one land next to you, BOOK IT! --- Enemy Aircrafts & Ground Vehicles --- Another thing that I was impressed with is how the aircrafts work in this game. You don't pilot any, but enemies do. Every now and then enemies order air strikes around the map and helicopters will hunt you and your teammates down. But, the most impressive thing I saw in this game is if you try to shoot down a jet with an anti-air missle launcher, the aircraft will deploy flares and will confuse your rocket. This was such a cool touch of detail that truly impressed me. There are also ground vehicles (Tanks and anti-personnel humvees) as well that are driven by enemies. Just like the helicopters, they spawn at random on the map and hunt you and your team down. This adds to the dynamic strategy to the game making you strategize on the fly on seeking shelter and how to take the ground units out immediately so you can proceed on your mission objectives. Very fun! --- Sprinting Mechanic --- You can sprint in this game, but not by a button click. Instead you swing your arms like STRIDE or Blades and Sorcery. It can be a bit difficult to get used to, but I actually prefer this type of sprinting. It adds to the VR gameplay and is pretty exhilarating as it adds to the action as you swing your arms heavily when trying to evade grenades and enemy gun fire. --- Virtual Crouching --- This game has kind of an interesting virtual crouch option. Just like a lot of VR titles, you have the option to click a button to virtually crouch. This aids in accessibility, it especially aids me because I play VR using a treadmill and being strapped in limits my vertical motion. However, unlike many VR titles that have virtual crouch, if you toggle crouch in this game and you physically duck, your motion is multiplied which helps to get into a prone position. This absolutely feels great and I wished more VR titles used this type of virtual crouching. Plus, you can hold down the virtual crouch to even duck down further virtually. It feels good! --- Inventory System --- The inventory system is a mixed bag, in my opinion (no pun intended). The way the inventory system works is you have a backpack that you grab not over your shoulder (unlike other VR games), instead you grab an icon that is on your lower left side in front of you. The backpack does get in the way at times, especially if I am throwing items away. If I throw it with my left hand, most of the time it will go into my backpack (which is the opposite of what I am trying to do). If the backpack was just over my left shoulder, this would not be an issue. Grabbing items from the backpack is kind of a pain. Unlike many VR games, you put your hand into a hole in the back pack, then you twist your hand around to grab the item you want. Thankfully there are hot spots on the front and sides of the backpack, but anything else you are going to be sitting there fighting with the little turn wheel as you twist your hand around. Would rather have a backpack system like in Into The Radius or Z.O.N.A. Putting things into the backpack can also be a bit un-intuitive. You can either grab the item from the world and store it on the backpack icon (lower left) or pull the trigger of the hand you are grabbing with. The trigger pull just feels odd and most of the time I accidentally do it. So, once I accidentally store something, I have to get my backpack out, fight with the selector wheel to grab the item, then finally throw the item away using my RIGHT hand. Very un-intuitive and should be improved on. Especially since the game is full of action. I feel if the backpack was, again, over your left shoulder, this would not be an issue. --- Gun Holsters --- Another issue outside of the backpack system is how the guns are stored. Mainly the pistols. Yes, you have two pistols, one on each side of your belt. However, these like to get in the way of grabbing ammunition from your belt. What I like doing when I start a mission is take my pistols and throw them. Never needed them, only got in the way. One way for the developer to fix this is to move the pistols so they are on your sides, not in front of you near the ammo belt. Also, having two pistols is a bit excessive I feel. Perhaps the other pistol holster could be used as another hot spot for any other inventory item. --- Multiplayer is Coming Soon! --- Currently the game is single player only, but the developer is currently working on adding multiplayer. I hope this comes soon. I feel this would be an excellent co-op experience and add to the tactical gameplay the game does have in its core. --- Overall --- Do I recommend Combat Troops VR? Absolutely! Yes! This game has got to be one of the finest hidden gems I have found on Steam. A lot of the mechanics are done well here! The gameplay is tough and may have some rough around the edges on some areas, but it is fun! I will definitely be coming back to this game regularly!
First of all, since the update the game has been a blast to play, the graphics are nice with open world combat makes the immersion more in depth. Explosions, jets, helicopter, etc, land mines, rocket launchers and the player customization brings your full body to the battlefield. It's so much more going on in this game it's way worth the price and with multiplayer coming in the future it only adds to an already epic military shooter. More maps, more weapons, more weapon skins and much much more coming. Just a Lil more optimization for a much smoother frame rate And dev's add maybe some vehicles the player could drive with his squad with him, like ghost Recon, that would require a very large map with multiple missions, please dev's make this happen Also dev's add a discord server And yes I would recommend this game
i will give it a chance to live is it does not get better this year its going to die witch is sad this is the closest we have to squad vr
personally like the game, it feels like on a real battlefield, I played on a short cable on oculus 2, you can see that the creators took care of the details. Destroying enemy objects with an RPG gives me chills, I have one suggestion please do something with the backpack it's really annoying, despite this bug this game has potential so I recommend it, I can't wait for multiplayer.
The game is unplayable it its current state. I could not turn the player, only move forward/backward, and strafe left/right using my quest 2. There is an auto grab feature that will automatically snap your hand to the guns magazine/front grip which really breaks immersion and feels very janky. I've played a lot of VR FPS games, and most of them follow the same button and weapon holster scheme, that allow you to access inventory by grabbing things from your body, not here. You can't holster your pistol at your hip, and rifle can't be holstered to your chest, or over your shoulder. There is none of that here, which is a bummer, another thing to break immersion.
