TLDR: Runs perfect on Steam Deck, Lack of polish, Beautiful pixel art, Just too short. Cody's Nightmare is a run-n-gun platformer focused on boss rushes with absolutely STELLAR pixel art and very little else. It claims full controller support, doesn't support the D-Pad at all. Coming in at 20 minutes to unlock every weapon and complete every level, I was left wanting significantly better. There's a big heart and scope here that I admire, and I would not have bought it if it did not catch my eye. The lack of sounds denoting enemy attacks, variation in boss patterns, and incredibly choppy level design (combined with bosses all taking less than a minute to dispose each) left me feeling kinda sad about it all. There is great potential from these developers, and I plan to stay following them.
Listen. This is more of a neutral review. The Game has a lot of great stuff, but there are also a lot negatives. Pros: - fantastic pixel art and smoth animations - good ost - charming concept - good controls - some good bosses Cons: - very short - way to easy bosses (for the most part) - bad telegraphing of levels and attacks - little upgrade options So yeah, a mixed bag. Though from an audio and visual standpoint the game is great, it falters at the gameplay. However, I do believe, that the developers will improve and make better games in the future, since they are pretty talented.
5/10 | Fun | Artistically Excellent | Short But Sweet. Disclaimer: This game will ONLY fetch you an hour or less of gameplay TOTAL. Cody's Nightmare is a very short but sweet 2D Platform Sidescroller Shoot 'Em up. Whilst it only took me 45 minutes to complete it remain genuinely enjoyable with excellent soundtracks, simplistic yet fun boss designs & a few upgrades to work with. This game is very much just an extremely simplified Cuphead in a sense. I would rate this game higher if the length was more & there were potential updates/DLC to come but it doesn't seem that way at all? NO bugs at all & no issues whatsoever. It's a good little game, I definitely would recommend this.
Last Bear Hurt my hand!!!
I had a lot fun with this game. It is a fun platform game with a great story to back it.
Pros: - Tight controls - Great soundtrack - Beautiful/fluid animations - Creative enemy design - Simple level design - Boss rush gameplay Cons: - Some bosses were too easy to beat - Levels were shorter than I'd liked - Demo and full game were similar in parts, yet different a many. I loved the game for what it was. The story was very adorable and simple. I was a bit disappointed, given the demo I played was a metroidvania with creative backtracking, purchasable upgrades and boss battles scattered throughout. In this game, you simply play and reply levels to gain enough candy to upgrade your weapon and get enough buttons after completing the level in order to progress to the next one. The most difficult boss battle was the last, hands down. I beat the game in 33 minutes. If you enjoy a relaxing, silly platform game with some replayability, pick this game up.
