Click Painter is a cute yet challenging pixel-art puzzle game that kinda feels like Minesweeper got busy with a craft store's entire "Paint-By-Numbers" aisle. I love it, but I'm also really really bad at it.
Gameplay + Details
It's Minesweeper, but swap out the bombs for 1-4 different paint colors; levels end when all colors are painted, or after 3-4 mistakes. "Story Mode" includes (96) total puzzles featuring 1-4 paint colors across small, medium, and large canvases; each puzzle forms a pixel-art image, but only the top rows seem to count for story achievements? "Classic Mode" randomly generates canvases to spec. In "Custom Mode," you can upload your own images. Controls. Keyboard + Mouse, or X-Box Controller. Playtime. Varies by skill level and canvas side/complexity. Settings/Options. Minimal and unintuitive. Colors are coded with different symbols.
What Works For Me
✅ Accessible even if you're unfamiliar with Minesweeper. ✅ Ability to make 3-4 mistakes per round alleviates some stress. ✅ "Coloring" means there are built-in patterns and logical deductions. ✅ Though the puzzles are still challenging. ✅ Uncovering cute artwork is so satisfying. ✅ Automatically saves, so easy to pick up/put down mid-level. ✅ The dopamine rush of finishing a perfect canvas!
What Doesn't Work For Me
🟥 Right/left click controls are unintuitive. 🟥 Sometimes, you really need more than 4 mistakes. 🟥 If you click out of the window and need to return, the cursor is invisible; it's easy to accidentally click the game area and lose a mistake.
Final Thoughts + Recommendation
Click Painter reminded me a little of Dorfromantik, if only for the absolute iron grip it had my brain for a few weeks. I'd queue up a true crime YouTube video and sit down to play one puzzle with my morning cuppa, only to emerge from a trance-like stupor hours later with no idea where the day went. Minesweeper always struck me as a little too random and unforgiving, but I love how the mechanics are implemented here and used to create art. The numbers can be overwhelming at times, especially on large 4-color canvases, but it's so satisfying to riddle out how everything fits together. That said, I wouldn't accuse this of being "cozy": the controls take a hot minute to get accustomed too, and if you share my skill issues, losses are inevitable. I've spent hours on a single puzzle only to fumble it at the finish line, and often sit at the edge of my seat, squinting at the screen, trying not to misclick or miscount. It's the good kind of stress, the sort that pays off when you actually conquer the puzzle, but it's still stress. Still, I easily recommend Click Painter to anyone who loves logical deductions, unique indie titles, and pixel-art. I've logged in ~70 hours in this and still have more to do. However, I would not recommend this if you're looking for a risk-free pixel-art puzzle that won't actively test your reasoning abilities; in that case, I'd nudge you toward Mewseum: Masterpieces instead.
This is an amazingly well-made puzzle game! Each picture puzzle, crafted with care by the developer, pulls you in so much that you’ll find yourself completely absorbed. And when you finally complete one, the sense of satisfaction is just unbeatable. The game gives you 5 lives for each stage, but you really only have 1. You’ll know what I mean shortly.
Click Painter is a colorful logic puzzle that puts players in the role of an artist tasked with creating paintings for display at Armi's museum. As a unique twist, the game is played the complete opposite of the classic Minesweeper formula. Rather than avoiding bombs, players are tasked with identifying their locations based with numerical clues and applying the correct colors to create a visually captivating masterpiece. Featuring 96 levels and multiple game modes, including Classic and Custom, this cerebral title offers endless hours of entertainment for puzzle lovers. With similarities to Mark Ffrench's Mega Mosaic games, players must use their deduction skills to determine the correct paint colors and locations for each cell. Developed by fallshad, Click Painter boasts a variety of graphic resolution options and support for window mode. Although game controllers are partially supported, players can enjoy a range of difficulty levels, from casual to moderate. While the game does not offer an undo function, mid-level saving is available, ensuring progress is never lost. With a tutorial to guide new players and support for nine languages, it caters to a diverse audience. The inclusion of separate volume sliders in the settings allows players to customize their audio experience. Additionally, 21 Steam Achievements offer a rewarding challenge for those looking to showcase their puzzle-solving prowess. In summary, Click Painter is an inventive logic puzzle game that offers a fresh take on the classic Minesweeper formula. By combining art, numerical clues, and advanced Minesweeper rules, this unique title challenges players to create stunning masterpieces while testing their deduction and problem-solving skills. Look man, I donno. Do you want Minesweeper? You like Minesweeper? Because it's Minesweeper, but arty! I don't feel like explaining Minesweeper. If you were old enough, you had this on your computer. Everybody had it. It was inescapable. You had the bouncy-cards solitaire, you had Minesweeper. Folks, I played a LOT of Minesweeper in the past. I kind of sucked at it though. Not because I didn't understand how to play it, it's fairly logical. But simply because I'd sort of get into a processing fog and eventually make a mistake, or misclick, and Minesweeper is the sort of game where a single error is a gameover state, with no possibility of recovery. It demands immediate perfection. I err grievously on a daily basis and I think tuna juice is tasty. I am not cut out for this. This game changes up the tone, though. It's not a smiley face flagging mines, it's an artist arting. The "mines" are where the art needs colouring in. The artist does have a few "erasers", so it means on any given playfield, one can make three (and with luck, four) free mistakes before failure. And beyond that, it has a sort of baked-in validation on each square, if you choose to use it. It ensures you have the right number of squares selected before permitting you to continue. It's nearly idiot-proof! I am clearly a stronger idiot than they reckoned on. I've done one two-colour map (small), and 20 other maps at up to size medium, over about two hours. The other six, seven hours was spent on the same large playfield. I failed it between twelve to 20 times, I lost count, but I've been on the same thing for the better part of a working day. (Not all at once, mind!) I am not cut out for this. I was drawn to the game by the promise of multi-coloured minesweeper. I think it's kind of a gimmick, but it does mean the pictures can be prettier when you can have glorious four-colour art. Being able to load up your own art is kind of nice, and there's even a bit of a story to the game which, it appears, I'll not see because I don't have what it takes. I wrote a friendly message to the developer on the Steam forums, begging for a "I am a baby who can't sweep mines" mode. The large maps are 64x64, or 4096 squares, and that's just too much for the likes of me. So if you liked the notion of Minesweeper, if you can stay focussed for longer than I, if you'd like to make your own playfields, or the notion of multi-colour Minesweeper speaks to you, here it is. It's quite delightfully priced during the sale, so even though I failed at the game, I still feel I got my money's worth. If you want what's likely 40 or more hours of arty puzzles, this has more value than a warehouse-store hotdog. As an aside, I do a little stuff with a curator and on Twitch. This is no mere "content", it contains a spark of my creativity. I write to amuse myself and anybody who's not afraid of a few words. You'll find links in my profile, you're part of an elite group who aren't afraid of paragraphs.
The game has been out for a week, and I really like it so far. It's a little similar to Mark Ffrench's games which I also like. The story mode is kinda like minesweeper, but you get a picture in the end, and classic mode is just minesweeper with up to 4 colors. The story mode has 96 level (up to 4 colors, 3 different sizes) and depending on if you are a perfectionist it will take a while. Also, the dev has been really fast so far with any bug fixes, I hope they keep it up.
No Responsibility Review,
