Posits a campaign around the Kurils and Sakhalin during the Russo-Japanese War. On the strategic map, it is… decent, and somewhat easy to figure out. Not so much on the battle maps. Goal is to have more victory points at the end. Suggest getting on discount.
Absolutely good theme. I spend almost entire night looking for such game on steam. But somehow my game doesn't run smooth on my computer. It's an asus tuf gaming laptop, and I think it is powerful enough to render everthing in this game, is there any solution?
This is an outstanding naval simulator covering an historical conflict. My playing hours are actually much higher than shown, as I typically keep Steam in Offline mode and my play hours are therefore not logged. And believe me, you can get lost for many hours in the Totem Games titles. Totem Games started out as a group of naval history enthusiasts who decided to create games. However, they didn't know how. Undaunted, they plunged ahead anyway and created, "Ironclads: American Civil War". That first title, while playable, was not stellar. But the fact that they created a playable game at all, having just begun and not being game developers, is pretty amazing. After that first title, each new release became better and better as they went on. This is their newest series, and the "Clad in Iron" series is their greatest achievement to date, though, "Ironclads 3" is in development, and I eagerly await its release. Totem Games is still made up of volunteer hobbyists, and the money that they receive from the sale of their games is used to purchase books, drawings, and other reference materials to further their knowledge of naval history and improve their games. The game-play in the, "Clad in Iron" series games is outstanding. All of their games, even the first, run fine under Windows 10 64-bit at high resolutions (I run all these titles at 2560 x 1440 with no problems). I have never experienced a bug during many hours of game-play in any of the Totem Games titles. If you're a fan of Surface Warfare and naval history, I highly recommend that you give these titles a try. There is a learning curve, and it will take you a short while to get competent at playing, but once you do I believe that you'll acknowledge that it was well worth the small effort to get going. There are helpful tutorial videos available from the developers on YouTube, and game manuals. Graphically, the environment in-game is pleasant, but where the games really shine is in the detailed historic ship models. The naval combat is utterly absorbing. Many times I have started one of these games intending to play for just a short time, and ended up involved for hours. I'm retired Navy and very fond of naval games, and I highly recommend all of the Totem Games titles. I own every one of their games and do not regret purchasing any of them. The "Clad in Iron" series is current, and fully supported by the developers and I'd recommend buying the complete bundle. Their past games are available on Steam as well, including the, "Ironclads 2" series, the original, "Ironclads" series and, "Victorian Admirals Anthology". While no longer officially supported, every one of the titles is very worthwhile, offering varying degrees of player involvement and you can purchase the, "10 in 1" bundle here on Steam (search "Ironclads 2") and have all of their previous games for a bargain price. Even their earliest titles run fine on modern PCs at high resolutions. All of the games include a, "config.exe" executable in the game folder. Be sure to run it to set your game options. Some of the earlier games don't include in-game menu option set up. But the config.exe in the game folder will take care of it. The later games have option menus in the game interface, but I always set up using config.exe. All-in-all, these titles are one of the best bargains on Steam for naval history buffs and lovers of Surface Warfare. You'll get many, many hours of enjoyment from the Totem Games titles and still want more. Very highly recommended!
Thumbs up.
Even though it's clear that the project was made by enthusiasts, the game is worth your attention and is made to a fairly high standard. (9/10)
Advantages:
✅ Setting – The game takes place in 1904 during the conflict between the Japanese and Russian Empires, competing for dominance in the Far East. ✅ Campaign – The game features a large campaign with the option to play as either side. It includes Sakhalin, Vladivostok, and the Kuril Islands, all of which you will have to fight for. There are also trade routes that deliver resources to your nation. You'll need to use all available resources wisely to dominate both at sea and on land. Send too few ships to protect your trade routes, and they may be destroyed by enemy battleships, cutting off your supplies. Take all your ships out of port, and the enemy may land troops and capture an important naval base. ✅ Ships – There's a wide variety of warships available, from long-range battleships to medium-sized cruisers and small torpedo boats. Massive dreadnoughts feature turrets with a 270-degree firing arc, while battlecruisers are faster but generally less powerful. Torpedo boats are fragile and can be destroyed quickly, but their torpedoes are capable of dealing devastating damage. ✅ Battles – Fleet control is simple and intuitive. You can command the lead ship, while the rest of the fleet follows its movements. Dreadnoughts usually lead the formation, followed by progressively smaller ships. Battles are often quite long, and heavily armored dreadnoughts can take a considerable amount of time to sink. One important tip is to conserve your armor-piercing shells for medium and close range. Using them at long distances, where accuracy is low, may leave you relying on high-explosive shells against heavy armor later in the battle, where they are far less effective. ✅ Visuals – The sea looks much better in this new installment. The waves are more realistic, and their appearance can be adjusted to your preference. The ships also look great. Although the sailors stand completely still, the cannon fire effects are impressive, the hulls show visible battle damage, and fires break out convincingly after hits.
Disadvantages:
❌ The sound behaves strangely. If something happens on the left side, the sound in the right earbud almost disappears, making the stereo separation feel very unnatural. ❌ Battles can sometimes be too long. Since fleets often spawn very far apart, it can take quite a while before they even engage. The game would really benefit from a 4× (or faster) time acceleration option. ❌ The camera is fairly limited. You can't move around the battlefield very freely, and I wish holding Shift would increase its movement speed several times. ❌ The game occasionally crashes, especially after battles. Although this doesn't happen often, a single crash during a long battle or before saving can seriously spoil the experience.
Note:
⚡ Ukrainian language is not supported, so you'll have to play in English. ⚡ If you're a fan of naval warfare from the era of battleships and dreadnoughts, I definitely recommend it.
This is a a highly detailed simulation. So thorough, it ought to be mentioned, that your ships may explode without warning or reason. An occurrence entirely in keeping with the realities of 1904. Best of luck.
Super buggy, game play not as shown in videos. Avoid
One of the few games that depicts the naval aspect of Russo-Japanese War (The only other games that I could think of is Ultimate Admiral Dreadnought and Distant Guns, of which DG is not on steam). In this game you could play as the detachment of either Imperial Japanese Navy and Imperial Russian Navy which is set in Sakhalin. You won't be seeing the Battle of Tsushima and Battle of Port Arthur in this game. Your ship are also limited, the biggest ship is Armored Cruiser for Japan and Protected Cruiser for Russia. The mission is to destroy the enemy fleet and occupies the port of the victory condition. Is the game hard? Not really. Is it full of action? No, it's a naval sim there's bound to be a lot of waiting (but you do get timeskip). The cannon is also inaccurate and requires you to almost get to point blank range to the enemy fleet. The only thing that prevents that is the several torpedo boats and TBDs you and your opponent has. When the cannon and/or the torpedo hits, it usually hits hard (especially those big cannon in cruiser). TLDR; Interested about the naval war in the Russo-Japanese War and willing to wait a long time for the ship to get into contact? If yes, you could buy this one since there are very few alternatives.
