Chronicles of cyberpunk is an adventure in the city, where power belongs to the Big Brother and his supercomputer. Freedom of actions and thoughts is just an illusion

Review copy provided by developer via Curator Connect It’s impossible to say what makes some games so bad they’re good, but I believe being earnest is a large part of it. A game that doesn’t have the best writing or systems can still get by on leaning into what it does have as hard as it can, without a hint of shame at its shortcomings. I think that’s why I ended up liking Chronicles of cyberpunk as much as I did, despite some very strong early misgivings. I’m not going to sit here and tell you it’s something amazing, but it’s certainly worth your time if you want something rough and weird and different. You are a citizen of a dystopian cyberpunk hellhole, an almost alien city that feels like a cross between Transmetropolitan and early 90s CGI. The angular mannequin people here are a mix of humans and cyborgs, living in strained harmony under the watchful eye of Big Brother. Yes, he’s literally called Big Brother in the game world and you are one of his top agents, charged with undertaking different tasks for him every day. However, on this one particular day you receive a letter that sets you on a very different path, one that promises to reveal the darkest secrets of this bizarre world. This is primarily an adventure game, told in first-person as you scoot around the city and talk to people. You won’t have any inventory to worry about and only a handful of action sequences where you need to run from something or shoot something. That places it more on the walking sim side of the genre, and indeed you’ll spend most of the game running from place to place, automatically completing tasks for folks by your very presence. While you’re out and about you’re free to explore and see what the citizenry has to say for itself, as well as marvel at the absolutely insane architecture adorning the district. Don’t get too excited about all of this, because the core gameplay elements are only passable at best. For starters the story is bad, and is told in one of the worst ways possible. It’s a complex plot with plenty of twists and turns through the tropes of cyberpunk but you get everything fed to you through dialog boxes, including dramatic reveals and startling deaths. The world has the static feel of something like old Morrowind, where you have a fully realized and populated world of people who do absolutely nothing except when you’re not looking and then tell you about it later. There’s also no advantage to exploring aside from turning up additional weirdness because there are no branches to the plot. Beyond the story, Chronicles of cyberpunk is a chore to play. Your objective is always posted in the top-right and features such scintillating tasks as “Get food in DINER” and “Say hi to drone”. It’s the lowest-effort way to keep the player on track and is a noticeable drag on the fun. Despite the simple polygonal graphics it runs really choppy, with constant animation hiccups. Before you start the game, the full range of Unity engine settings from Fastest to Fantastic is available to you and none of them change a thing. There also aren’t any in-game options for basic elements like controls or volume, leaving you stuck with default keys and other important settings. I was tempted to punch out of this one based on the technical limitations alone, but I stuck around to have breakfast with my giant monitor-brick drone roommate and collect my mail from the flying postman outside my window. On the way to DINER I stopped to watch the flying cyborg cats drift by and speak to a head in a jar. I became engrossed in the world and its profound weirdness just to see what else was hiding around the next corner. The maps tend towards flat, empty stretches to hike across but they’re filled with nonsensical architecture, pulsating devices, and hilarious citizens who sound like they’re debating metaphysics in Google Translated tweets. It’s shoddy in places and well-constructed in others, a mad crush of design that builds with the story enough to get me invested in the plot by the end despite how badly it’s paced and expressed. Chronicles of cyberpunk isn’t a good game. There are too many problems with the narrative, the quests, the translations, and even the game engine itself. But I enjoyed the 80 minutes it took to finish and I’m glad I did it, not because it was good but because it was so very, very different. A lot of games try to capture that untouchable magic of the strange and this is one of the rare ones that does it, just in a rickety, confusing package. It plays like Jazzpunk with E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy’s text, two inscrutable games on their own that this crossing tops in how unapproachable it is. But approach it you should, even for a moment, to glimpse the mad and broken wonders within. Did you enjoy this review?
Итак, Chronicles of cyberpunk.
Franchement, bravo.
Conclusion :
It's a rather simplistic walking sim but it does have a fantastic soundtrack and a good story although the story gets a little convuluated near the end. Overall though it is still a worthwhile way to spend an hour and a half. It didn't crash on me once, ran at 144FPS the whole time and was enjoyable. It's worth the current asking price of $5.64 CAD. If you like walking sims and cyberpunk themed games I would recommend you give it a go.
You can find hundreds of other reviews through our Curator page
"The solution to every in-game problem is to run some ware"
Your enjoyment of Chronicles of Cyberpunk is going to be heavily reflective of your tolerance to weird ♥♥♥♥. It’s a bizarre walking sim, made in a world that bleeds together low-poly 3D modelling and simple hand drawn animations that looks every bit as odd as it sounds. Set in the dystopian future you all expected the second you read the game’s title, your exploration of the world of tomorrow is… going to be a challenge to describe. You’re initially asked to power up your household drone, which is found in an enclosed charging station hidden at the head of your bedroom. Just go past the digital clock that displays the time as “SLEEP” and ignore the holographic camera that shows a scene for the streets below of some guy apathetically stomping on another guy. The drone isn’t particularly sci-fi; it’s more or less a refrigerator-sized block with awkward flappy panels on either side, with a busy face display of meaningless hand-drawn scrolling numbers. Power it up, and it’ll immediately laugh at you and make a break for freedom through your bedroom window. You’ll find it in the next room over, smug about pulling another classic drone practical joke. Later, the drone will wake you in the middle of night because your oven is trying to eat it. Later still, you’ll find it in the shower where it lectures you on being a creepy pervert. Later even still, you return to your apartment to discover it has let a homeless woman in, who is sitting at your table, eating cake. She tells you not to worry about the complete stranger chilling in your front room, and how you should probably just go to bed. This obviously strikes you as sound advice; you promptly go to bed. I could list uncanny drone interactions throughout, but there’s endless weirdness elsewhere. Just outside your apartment is a gang of flying kittens swarming around a robotic street cleaning machine that has declared itself an enemy of all things cat. When inside your apartment, you can tell it’s raining outside, but once you leave, you find the rain is artificial, emanating from several giant pipes seemingly welded to the sky. A corrupt patrolman demands someone’s spleen as a bribe. All the buildings have bright white nameplates above their doors, which is appreciated when you’re trying to find the diner or the casino. There’s also a pedestrian who owns a nameplate that just reads ‘Despair’. Your place of work does not display a company name. It just says ‘BOSS’. Also, your boss’ name is literally Big Brother, which is a little on the nose. But it does give you a good idea on what direction Chronicles is going to go in, until it doesn’t. The last third of the game contains Chronicles’ roughest spots, including a cat and mouse chase around a confusing map where the location of the end goal is poorly explained, a trek through a winding staircase that presents little and takes forever, and the toothless attempt at implementing combat. But it also contains a ruthless and aggressive bait-and-switch tactic that cycles through all the cyberpunk archetypes with reckless abandon. It presents a rapid progression of shock twists that change the landscape of the game, then bombastically annuls them moments later with further shock twists that discredits the previous twist, or piles another layer atop a previous twist which you had recently discounted. It plays out like a self-aware M. Night Shyamalan parody script that you’ll either find a confusing lump of nonsense or an alluring cacophony of chaos. I did warn you that your enjoyment of Chronicles of Cyberpunk is going to be heavily reflective of your tolerance to weird ♥♥♥♥.
Chronicle of Cyberpunk ▸ Écrit
I love a good cyberpunk game but this game is odd. Like really odd. And in all honesty it's a pretty bad game with a ton of problems. For one the game is developed by one person and it looks like it. Visually the game is just plain weird and as far as text and visuals go it looks bad. The design on the other hand is stylized in a super interesting way which makes the bad visuals feel less like just plain bad visuals and instead like interesting looking style choices which on some level they are. The soundtrack is good which is always nice, especially for cyberpunk/ scifi style games. The plot has the biggest problems which I'll talk about in a minute. And finally, the game is short, confusing, and not very interactive. Despite all of my problems though I like the game and recommend it. The plot though has real problems. For one it doesn't make any sense at all and it doesn't help that everything is conveyed in textboxes that are easy to accidentally skip through, with sometimes weird broken english. A couple more tests, especially some english translation testers would help out some of that. In addition the actual plot, is cyberpunk but also just plan confusing. Some people may consider this spoliers but the game has the tropes of big brother watching over, and cyborgs, and all of that but it also has weird stuff involving a supercomputer that doesn't really make too much sense even by the end of the game. Also the animation is so limited that the diologue is all a little weird in some points because you walk up to people and then text pops up and nothing changes. I liked the story in the end though despite it making no real sense. Overall though I liked Chronicles of Cyberpunk, especially aesthetically where it really shines, and in the heart of the game which can come through in the developers obvious love and care of the game they have made. It's clear this game is a passion project and that passion comes out through a lot of the game. If you're okay with a really weird and kinda nonsensical game then check this one out
