Chiyo is a tightly focused first-person horror experience that draws its strength from atmosphere, cultural texture, and slow-building dread rather than combat or constant shocks. Developed and published by Nimbus Games, it places you in the role of Idate Chiyo, a paranormal investigator operating during Japan’s Edo period, who is dispatched to examine a remote, abandoned mansion shrouded in rumor and tragedy. The moment you cross its threshold, the game commits fully to a mood of isolation and creeping tension; there is no weapon to hold, no companion to rely on, and no guarantee that anything you see will remain still when you turn your back. The premise is simple, but it is executed with enough care and audiovisual polish that the mansion itself becomes a character — a decaying, whispering entity filled with unanswered questions. The presentation does much of the heavy lifting. Chiyo’s environments draw heavily from historical Japanese architecture, using dim lantern-light, weathered wood, sliding doors, and narrow corridors to strike a balance between authenticity and claustrophobia. Shadows pool in corners, hallways stretch just a little too far, and the emptiness of the estate carries a quiet hostility that leaves you second-guessing every step. The sound design deepens this unease: subtle footsteps where no one stands, faint humming drifting through the halls, creaking boards that seem to shift as if the house itself is breathing. This restrained approach to horror—where sound, lighting, and spatial uncertainty create tension—makes the game feel unnervingly intimate, as though you’re always being watched even if nothing is on screen. The core of the game revolves around puzzle solving, and it embraces this identity with clarity and confidence. Instead of relying on jumpscares or scripted chase sequences, Chiyo challenges the player to carefully explore rooms, decipher clues, examine objects, and unlock the secrets of the mansion’s past. Many puzzles are reminiscent of real escape-room logic: patterns hidden in decor, coded notes, mechanical contraptions, and environmental storytelling that gradually reveals the tragic history of the people who lived—and died—within these walls. The puzzles are generally fair, though they demand patience and attention; solving them produces the kind of small, satisfying breakthroughs that make the mansion’s narrative and layout snap into place piece by piece. Where the game’s story excels is in the way it unfolds through discovery rather than exposition. You learn about the household’s downfall through diaries, objects, symbolic motifs, and the ghosts that linger in the shadows. The tone leans toward sorrow and inevitability: a sense that the spirits are trapped as much by their own anguish as by supernatural forces. Rather than leaning into gore or spectacle, the narrative builds its horror from understated tragedy — a family undone by secrets, obsessions, and emotional pain. It is this emotional grounding, filtered through a culturally specific lens, that gives the game a lingering impact. The horror is not just that the mansion is haunted, but that the memories it contains have weight. Still, Chiyo is not without limitations. The commitment to puzzle-forward design means that players seeking more dynamic horror may find the experience too subdued. There are stretches where tension dips, particularly for those who become accustomed to the mansion’s rhythms. Because the game eschews combat entirely, some may find the sense of vulnerability too one-note after the initial hours. Additionally, as with many visually driven indie titles, performance can vary depending on hardware, and the atmospheric visuals demand enough fidelity that older systems may struggle. These are manageable issues, but they shape how different players might receive the experience depending on what they expect from horror. Overall, Chiyo succeeds by knowing exactly what kind of game it wants to be: a quiet, ominous, culturally rooted horror adventure centered on mystery, mood, and thoughtful puzzle design. It never overwhelms you with spectacle; instead, it draws you into the slow unraveling of a haunted estate and asks you to sit with the unease of its silences and its shadows. For players who appreciate psychological tension, methodical investigation, and stories told through careful environmental detail, Chiyo offers a memorable journey. For those who come seeking action or high-intensity fear, the game may feel restrained — but for its intended audience, it stands as a haunting, atmospheric piece that lingers well after the final puzzle is solved. Rating: 6/10

The overall story is mind blowing. The story is confusing at first but everything unravels in time and the way they pace it is good. The soundtrack that goes along with it amplifies the emotions/terror that is being conveyed. Props to the sound engineering team. Most importantly, the main aspect which is the puzzles have just the right amount of difficulty that will keep you on your toes. If you are a history buff(In terms of edo japan and japanese mythology) all the details are very accurate to lore. The easter eggs are so fun to find as well. Over all a very history accurate horror game paired with amazing auditory engineering!

This game is very scary. I always walk slowly before entering any room to avoid jump scare but unfortunately the ghost caught me. I cannot think of the puzzle very well because the ghost will come to me if i not doing anything. Overall the game is great for horror story plus puzzle game. I am waiting for more from this game devs to develop another good game. Thanks devs for making great game to us. :)
