If you want a serious chess experience, there's chess.com. If you want a cinematic experience, there's Chess Infinity. The effects are a little much, but they can be turned off.

Nachdem ich sehr viel Chess Ultra gespielt habe, wollte ich dieses Spiel wirklich mögen und gab ihm trotz der negativen Rezensionen eine Chance. Leider muss ich mich aber den Kritiken anschließen. Die Idee, im KI Zeitalter genau solche Elemente im Schach einzubauen, vor allem Analyse, Training usw., erschien mir sehr reizvoll. Nichts dergleichen findet sich aber wirklich in diesem Spiel. Die KI diente vor allem dazu, Profilbilder zu generieren. Diese Gamification Elemente mit Levelaufstieg und Belohnungen sind ziemlich gelungen. Aber das Spiel scheitert trotzdem an zwei Punkten, die so groß sind, sodass es einfach unspielbar wirkt: Zunächst stehen einem die Standard Staunton Figuren nicht zur Verfügung, sondern man muss sie mit Grinden erspielen. Wie kann ein ernsthaftes Schachspiel einem die klassischen Figuren vorenthalten? Am Anfang hatte ich beim Japan-Schachbrett weniger mit Strategie zu tun als mit der ständigen Frage, wie ich Läufer von Königin unterscheiden kann. Ein Schachspiel, dass ernstgenommen will, darf sowas einfach nicht tun. Wenn ich Cat Chess spiele, weiß ich, worauf ich mich einlasse und bezahle ausdrücklich für diesen Humor, aber bei Chess Infinity ist das ganz deplatziert. Und der zweite, fast schlimmere Punkt: Wie kann ein Schachspiel einen PC dermaßen überfordern, dass selbst Gaming PCs in die Knie gehen müssen? Das Spiel ist leider scheinbar schlecht optimiert und sorry, ein Schachspiel, das ruckelt und verzögert... ein Schachspiel. Selbst auf geringsten Aufforderungen ist es kaum flüssig zu bekommen, davon mal abgesehen, dass alles körnig aussieht und die Figuren, sowieso schon schlecht zu unterscheiden, noch schlimmer aussehen. Alles in allem tut es mir fast weh das Spiel nicht empfehlen zu können. Wer von den Entwicklern genau das Gegenteil haben will - ein flüssiges, toll aussehendes Schachspiel mit normalen Figuren und schönen Neuschöpfungen - , der ist mit Chess Ultra besser bedient.

Relaxing and beautiful looking chess game

Why should someone buy Chess Infinity if there are professional programs out there , both free and commercial, that offer more options? The answer is simple! Extremely beautiful 3D visuals, animations, calm ambient sounds, and relaxing music create an outstanding atmosphere! The graphical user interface is beautiful, and the AI, with plenty of difficulty levels to choose from, wonderfully mimics the human style of play. In addition, the program gives you experience points and coins every time you interact with it. Coins and experience points unlock new chess sets and visual items to create your very own avatar. There are lessons for beginners, intermediate players, and plenty of chess exercises. GREAT! There is really just one downside: there should be an AI player with a skill somewhere between 1500 and 1900 Elo points. Maybe 1700 Elo points! A 400 Elo point difference between one difficulty level and the next is too high.

Eh, I read the reviews for this game before buying it. I saw some reviews stating the prior game, Chess Ultra, is better than this one. I own Chess Ultra myself and played it quite a bit before buying Chess Infinity. To get straight to the point...the people who wrote negative reviews against Chess Infinity, ESPECIALLY those who actually said that Chess Ultra is better than Chess Infinity...they are on very very serious drugs. I highly suspect they are on Sherman... Sherm (also known as a Sherman, Sherm stick, or dipper) is street slang for a tobacco cigarette or marijuana joint that has been dipped in liquid phencyclidine (PCP) and dried prior to smoking. The name originally derived from Nat Sherman brand cigarettes, which were frequently used for dipping due to their sturdy paper and casing.Composition and MisconceptionsChemical Content: The dipping solution consists primarily of PCP dissolved in solvents. It's not Stockfish...it's not a chess analyzer engine. it's a super beautiful chess game that allows you to highly enjoy the process of playing chess. It's a BEAUTIFUL game. I have a high end computer so if you own a potato buy at your own risk. My computer plays the game with no problems or issues. This is my review to all my fellow chess enthusiasts. God Speed.

Great graphics, good gameplay, also there is a campaign for you to unlock new locations. It requires you to spend some time in order to unlock all these locations. You can also unlock chess pieces and portraits.

Local/offline play is a bit clunky, the game expects a permanent internet connection. When you start in offline mode the game complains with an error message (but it still works if you cancel the message box). The graphics are pretty, but of course resource hungry. On a Steam Deck, on first start the performance is horrendous (8-10 fps), but gets better once you cycle/apply all the individual graphics settings (reflections, shadows etc.) and then set them to low or medium. (Especially global illumination needs to be set to low, that one seems to be a GPU hog.) Afterwards the game can reach about 40 fps on the Deck. I am not that keen on the concept of having to 'earn' things like chess sets, but then again that mechanic is supposed to keep you motivated. The AI can be scaled down significantly; there are virtual opponents with 600 elo and less, so there is something even for beginners and very casual players here. TL;DR not a perfect game and you have to fiddle a bit on the Deck, but if you like a game of chess in a stylish wrapping, you can do worse.
