Casual Sport Series: Tennis

This series serves as a great yet simple introduction to spots. The game is best played with a gamepad, although a keyboard works nicely as well. It is all quite simple: you run around the court and hit the ball back. The longer you hold down the button, the more powerful and precise the impact. You can also choose which direction to hit the ball. However, you must exercise caution because it is easy to hold too long and lose control of the ball. Furthermore, the opponent frequently sends a quick ball before you have chance to even press the button. These can only be returned by tapping the button. Unfortunately, there are some instances in which your player merely stands there and does not return the ball. Despite the word "casual" in the title, the game is fairly deep. To add some strategy to the game, you can press one of the four keys to execute special shots. All of them are activated by holding the button for a second, similar to the powerful shot, and catching the moving portion in the extremely small colored zone. There is a weaker smash that causes the ball to drop immediately after passing through the net, a stronger smash, a lob, and a few others. This is a pure sports game, so there is no story mode. You just have a quick match and a tournament. Both allow you to select one of eight players and play on one of eight courts. The distinction with a tournament is that you must go through three courts and opponents to win it all. You can also adjust the amount of sets. There are no rewards or unlockables. Players are only a visual choice. You can alter a few outfits, but they all play the same. Courts are classic with grass, tarmac, sand, and they come with an audience. But the best detail is that the court's condition changes; you will see ball impacts and lines you make by running left and right.

Don't get discouraged. At first, it was massively frustrating, jokingly compared it as Dark Souls Tennis. You would get decimated by the computer nonstop. Whether their perfect serves or their aggressive smashes. Eventually, between my cursing and near rage quitting, I began to notice their tendencies. The computer would try to make me vulnerable for a smash. Do it before they do it. While not my go-to tennis strategy, I just played as aggressive with crowding the net and found out quickly it's the way to play against the computer. They're clearly all programmed to play aggressive, so do it to them before they have a chance to do it to you. It honestly doesn't make it repetitive or weak either, the matches can and will be hyper competitive. Just be mindful and know when to bail if you don't have a smash opportunity, because the computer will lob it deep while you're in no man's land. I went in expecting a mobile experience, but the reality is you got a full fledged tennis game, it's really just missing all the modes and player customization you have from officially licensed tennis games. You have essentially tournament, academy (tutorials) and exhibition mode, as singles or double options. There are several court types as well with their unique stats and looks to them. More than meets the eye. There's a lot to this game, I really wish there was a way to save all the stats you get from post matches, because there's a ton of analytics to sink your teeth in to if you're a nerd like me. Honestly, it wouldn't be too far fetched to think that if you took the stats to heart, you could probably improve your game. The developer has noted of future updates to address some aspects like difficulty modes. I first played it and felt it was too hard, but now I think there's enough challenge that forces you to get better once you adapt and read how the computer plays.
