For a game that was released on a "PC/Laptop platform" You Would Have Thought That the game would have easy to use keyboard controls, but No. Looks like the game was created for console or mobile and ported to PC/Laptop; a big read flag (that was ignored in my case) was the Full Xbox Controller Support. If you can't use controllers, this game is not for you. Even though it can be played with a keyboard, the controls sck and can't be customised to something easier and more playable. If you are going to port a console game to a PC/Laptop platform you could at the very least make the keys customisable.
Cassiodora, developed by Void Studios and published by PID Games in collaboration with Dear Villagers, is a vibrant side-scrolling shoot ’em up that fuses classic arcade sensibilities with a whimsical medieval fantasy theme. Rather than spaceships and alien armadas, the game swaps lasers for enchanted weapons, dragons, sorcery, and heroic knights, immediately giving it a distinctive identity within a genre traditionally dominated by sci-fi aesthetics. From the opening moments, Cassiodora positions itself as a celebration of old-school action, while layering in modern conveniences and cooperative play to keep the experience approachable. At its core, Cassiodora is built on traditional horizontal shooter fundamentals. Enemies stream in from all directions, the screen fills with projectiles, and survival depends on sharp reflexes, spatial awareness, and pattern recognition. What elevates the experience beyond a simple retro homage is the elemental magic system tied to the three playable knights. Each character is granted magical wings and access to different elemental powers, allowing players to switch abilities mid-stage to exploit enemy weaknesses or neutralize environmental hazards. This mechanic adds a light strategic layer, encouraging adaptability rather than rote memorization, and keeps moment-to-moment gameplay engaging as situations constantly evolve. Level design plays a significant role in sustaining the game’s momentum. Cassiodora spans multiple regions, each with its own visual style, enemy types, and mechanical twists. Forests, haunted lands, volcanic zones, and fortified strongholds all feel distinct, helping prevent visual fatigue and reinforcing a sense of progression. Stages are handcrafted rather than procedurally generated, which allows encounters to be carefully paced and themed. Boss battles, in particular, stand out as memorable set pieces, often requiring players to learn attack patterns, manage screen space efficiently, and time elemental swaps precisely to survive extended confrontations. One of Cassiodora’s greatest strengths is its emphasis on cooperative play. Supporting local co-op for up to three players on a single screen, the game captures the communal energy of classic arcade cabinets. Cooperative play adds both chaos and charm, as players coordinate movement, cover each other during intense bullet patterns, and share the pressure of boss fights. Difficulty options and adjustable revival mechanics ensure that co-op sessions remain fun rather than punishing, making the game accessible to newcomers while still offering a challenge for seasoned shoot ’em up fans. Progression and customization are present but intentionally restrained. Rather than deep RPG systems, Cassiodora focuses on cosmetic unlocks and difficulty mastery. A wide selection of skins allows players to personalize their knights, offering visual rewards for continued play without upsetting balance. This design choice keeps the focus squarely on skill and cooperation rather than stat grinding, aligning with the genre’s arcade roots. Replay value comes primarily from mastering stages, improving performance, and experimenting with different character and elemental combinations, especially in co-op settings. Visually, Cassiodora adopts a bright, colorful art style that complements its fairy-tale tone. Characters and enemies are clearly readable even during hectic moments, which is crucial in a genre where clarity directly affects playability. Effects are flashy without becoming overwhelming, and the medieval fantasy motifs give each stage a playful charm. The soundtrack supports the action with energetic, heroic themes that enhance the sense of adventure without distracting from the gameplay, while sound effects provide satisfying feedback during combat and boss encounters. While Cassiodora excels at delivering a polished and enjoyable shoot ’em up experience, it does not radically reinvent the genre. Players seeking deep mechanical innovation or long-term progression systems may find the experience somewhat traditional. Extended solo sessions can also reveal a degree of repetition inherent to the genre, as the core loop remains consistent throughout. However, these limitations feel more like conscious design choices than shortcomings, reflecting the developers’ intent to refine and celebrate a familiar formula rather than overhaul it. Overall, Cassiodora succeeds as a confident and charming indie shoot ’em up that blends classic arcade action with a refreshing fantasy theme and strong cooperative focus. Its tight controls, thoughtfully designed stages, and accessible co-op options make it well suited for both solo players and groups looking for shared, high-energy fun. While it may not redefine the genre, it delivers exactly what it promises: a polished, colorful, and highly enjoyable throwback that feels right at home among modern indie action titles. Rating: 7/10
