Sadly that game had bad press at the release, but it's not the case anymore. Do not take the reviews in February as legit, the game as game breaking bugs back then, but the developer did fix all of them and if any other bug is found you can join Cascade Tactics Discord tell it there and the developer will do his best to fix it, The game is also still getting updates at the moment of this review, he recently added a new rogue mode, added more equipment's and there is more to come. (The game is already complete, but he's just adding more content for free)
There is promise here in the gameplay, but the functionality is all kinds of bad. It ramps me up to thousands of FPS, getting OUT of the game without alt F4 or task manager is impossible if I'm not mistaken? I'll come back and visit it again once it gets some polish, because as a long time FFT fan there is for something here.
Update 11/10/22: Controller still doesn't work. Tried my ps4 w/DS4 Windows, neither playstation nor xbox settings work. Xbox controller also doesn't work. Both only move in menus, no buttons work. All commands and such is situated for a controller, you can't click where you want to move w/the mouse, you have to use WASD then click. It's tedious and makes the game no fun to play. It also still runs quite poorly. Old review: So broken. Tutorials barely work. Keyboard and Mouse are very finicky and you can't click on much to do much. It says full controller support.. but the controller doesn't work for movement or anything once selected. "pressing Y or X or whatever" does nothing. Not way to cancel with the controller. Hotkeys and such are all for controller, nothing on keyboard hotkeys. Have to alt+f4 sometimes to get out of the game. Can't control sound outside of the game. I've been looking forward to this.. but I would give it a wide berth for awhile. It's not in a "release" state.
General Overview
This review was edited after the April 8th “Full Renovation”. Strong Positive recommendation. Value for money is incredible. Great art style and battle system. Neat rogue like elements in terms of quests and rewards. A very satisfying gameplay loop - battle, upgrade/manage troops, repeat. Story is present but not intrusive. Really enjoy seeing the incremental progress made through scaling both the units and their equipment. If you enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics, you'll enjoy this. The job system is similar (level up one or two jobs to unlock more advanced ones), with a great twist of allowing progress from one job to be equipped as a secondary job when moving to a new one.
The Good

Graphics/art style – Wonderful sprite work, animation, and backdrops. I like the use of elevation and choke points.
Combat – Engaging and strategic. Good amount of challenge as well, especially in the early game (maybe too much?)
Story – I enjoy what I’ve experienced- saw all the story that was available a couple of years ago, and I’m excited to see how it’s developed.
Progression – Definitely felt like I was getting increasingly powerful- the scaling of everything means you need to spend your gold wisely, but the build system is really flexible so I don’t think you could soft-lock your progress in terms of difficulty.

The Bad

Orientation of controls – The gamepad directions are off, for me. I find that on the battle maps pressing the “up” arrow moves the cursor to the NW, but I would expect it to go NE. I continuously struggle, and now awkwardly hold the gamepad rotated about 45 degrees to mitigate
Optimization of controls – I’d like to be able to hold the arrow button down to move multiple tiles, rather than tapping for each tile

Suggestions

The early game is harsh – on my first non-story mission I had a level 3 leader and the rest of my squad were level 2, and was choosing between level 4 missions. I was able to overcome (after a couple attempts) but I worry that a new player might get frustrated and quit before learning the basics.
Reinforcements – We’re often outnumbered as it stands, so I’m not a huge fan of the reinforcements that pop up immediately after defeating an opponent. They come in really close to the action, but at least they don’t seem to take their turns right away.
A blast bringing back what "Tactics" meant in the late 90's. Combat can range from very simple (move and attack) to totally crazy (teleporting/redirecting spells...) depending on how you play and build your characters. It's fun because it all works out if you invest accordingly, regardless of the path you choose. From a full party of Mages to a full party of cut throats, if you play and use your resources to strengthen what you go for, it yields amazing results. On the battlefield, delayed actions offer more possibilities but require a good look at the initiative queue as you can cancel any casting with any attack. Combat is quite deep but there are many visual hints to help understand who does what and more importantly when. The dual job system allowes for a lot of freedom when it comes to building your six unit army as there is no job limitation. You can use whatever job you have available and mix it with any other one without restrictions. Granted, some mixes are more efficient than others but you are free to switch and experiment if you don't play on the hardest settings. The gear system helps fine tune your deadly creations. The three different game modes really impact how the game plays out. I had a lot of fun and will certainly come back for a new team set up once post 1.0 is done.
ENG: It's been a while since I've had so much fun with a tactics game. Cascade Tactics has a passable story within the genre, but what really makes the game shine is its dynamic combat system, which stands out with abilities that require casting time and a wide variety of classes that combine with skills and equipment. Its survival and roguelike modes (with leaderboards) turn it into an addictive grindfest, where you're no longer playing to beat it, but to see how powerful you can make your character, in true Disgaea style. As of writing this, I have characters around level 800, with over 10k health, for example. For me, it's honestly a 10/10. Despite some minor bugs, it's a game that tempts me to open it every time I sit down to play.
Some tactics games get better as you play. This one outnumbers you and ice prisons all of your guys over and over, and sends reinforcements to keep doing the same. (There are additional 100% hit 100% loss of control spells that are as bad or worse: mind control and petrify and stop) There's quite a few skills that are useless, and others that are overpowered. Compare the slow spell that makes them move maybe 50% at the point you cast it, and the instant freeze that prevents their turn. Both keep going only as long as you cast it, so one is obviously better. There is a lack of inventory management, so that also will get WAY worse as you play. No filter/sort/anything at all. 20 hours or so of play, and I had 3 or so soft-locks, but was otherwise playable.
If you're into games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, this game will be up your alley. The game is tactical hence the name of the game, at least a dozen class changes plus a few more hidden classes (i.e. Time Mage, Warlock, Vampire Knight, etc.), a bunch of abilities per class, a bunch of items and equipment, able to combine items to create new items, etc. There are two things that I want to address which I didn't really like about the game: (1) Missions get repetitive after a certain amount of levels and (2) On numerous occasions during missions enemies will be attacking enemies or allies attacking allies for no apparent reason, a bug in the game? Perhaps? If the developers were able to fix these two things it would be an even better game no doubt.
Enjoying the game so far, buuuuut... the NPC AI is retarded. Allies will shoot you in the back, and blast you with fireballs if you dare stand in between them and the enemy. XD
