Update: The developer has updated to game to address some of my concerns. That is *very cool*. 'Easy Mode' has been added, which is still very hard. RE: Unapproachable Controls: Slight turns are now possible, and a fun drifting mechanic has been implemented. This is a big help. RE: Powerups and road hazards look similar. Helpful icons have been added over power ups that help differentiate them from hazaards. RE: Death walls. The walls of the arena electrocute you, and cause damage to your car. A front end collision with a wall is basically a death sentence. This is still a frustrating way to end a match. Carsteroids is coming along well, but it still feels like an early access game. It's not quite fun yet, though it definitely has the potential to get there. I am giving this game a positive review based on my experience with the developer, and my confidence in the future of this game.
One of those true hidden gems on Steam, which absolutely deserves more attention.

Carsteroids is one of those games you want to play when you come back home after a long and stressfull day. It brings you back to one of those titles that made the history of videogames. You jump straight into action, and it leaves everything under your control. Initially it could be frustrating because it's quite challenging, but this is the factor that after few days playing I started to appreciate. Videogames should be though, you're supposed to suck at the beginning and get better with practice. Then it becomes very rewarding. I was also impressed about how every match feels different. I played the 1st level many times and it felt like a new level, where I adopted a different strategy. Opponents seems quite smart, they seem to adapt to the player's strategy rather than following scripted patterns. Music and sound effects are well made, they are not too distracting and definetely have that retro touch that helps Carsteroids to stand out compared to other similar videogames. In terms of improvements, I would love to see a bigger map and the option to drive different type of vehicles that suit different styles of playing the game, like a tank (slow but with high HP), or a fast vehicle with low HP but capable to do a lot of damages per second. Overall I love this game and I really recommend it especially if you're looking for a challenge. Absolutely a must have!
Ignore the Obey The Fist review on this page. That guy is a no-nothing fool who does not understand PC games in the least, despite acting like an expert. This is a very fun and well-designed game that is a throwback to arcade games of yesteryear without being beholden to the rules of the past. The inspirations of Asteroids, Smash TV, and the original GTA games are pretty obvious. It's themed as a futuristic dystopian game show where the contestants are in a life-or-death situation of deadly combat with each other. You drive your car around an arena and attempt to shoot your opponent to death before they do that to you. Simple concept with a refined execution. The thing most people will notice about this game is it is hard. Extremely hard. One of the most difficult games I've played in a long time. It somehow manages to make it seem fair. I never felt like the game was cheating me and my deaths were all my own fault, simply not being deft with the controls yet. I do wish you didn't have to return to the beginning of the current level set you're playing when you die though. There is a lot of heart put into this game and it shines through. Anyone who is interested in arcade-style games should give this a chance. Are you going to trust a guy like Obey The Fist! who thinks that all games require modern 3D graphics and that sales figures represents quality? Can you imagine the life of a dude who spends much of his free time playing games he hates and copy-and-pasting his review templates into nearly 18,000 days? A sad pathetic life. Anyway, Carsteroids good.
Come potete vedere, ho ricevuto il gioco gratis poichè sono stato il traduttore per la versione italiana. Gioco molto difficile e old school. Se volete un gioco che vi fa spaccare il gamepad sulla scrivania questo è il gioco giusto :D
CARSTEROIDS is, well, nothing to do with Asteroids although that seems to be the gist of the branding. This is just a lame 2D retro top down shooter with a "car" theme, slapped together badly with the godawful Construct 2 construction kit (no coding needed!). Gameplay consists of just lame top down shooting and a bit of "car steering" not unlike the OG Grand Theft Auto (but this has a fraction of the content and style). There's a few game modes but none of them add any interest to an old, dead concept. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, and it's hard to say if this is due to the age of the assets used, if it's a deliberate attempt for the game to look bad/retro on purpose, or if the assets are just, well, terrible looking. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game in 2025, such poor quality 2D graphics in the 3D era just aren't good enough, whether it's a deliberate design fault on behalf of the developer or they just couldn't manage to do any better, this is a compromise gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the Construct 2/Construct 3 game engine/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur developers as it doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities (it's worse than GameMaker Studio!). Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2025 (and this was released not so far back in 2019), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game all-time peak player count was only ONE player. That's right, only one person ever played this at a time. When I played this for the purposes of reviewing it, I equalled the peak player count for the game. OUCH. The only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 130,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 130,000+ games on Steam? CARSTEROIDS has the greedy, cash grab price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Middle Earth - Shadow of Mordor", "Mass Effect" or "DOOM". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.

Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer claims their goal was to... make this game? That's incredibly, insanely self-evident, isn't it? What a pointless breach of guidelines to say what was obvious. Of course they clearly put as much consideration into breaching Valve guidelines as they did with conceptualizing the game... a game NOBODY wanted. SteamDB isn't lying about the player count. That's player count, not counts, because peak player count here is just 1. With 130+ million monthly unique gamers playing games on Steam every month, that's beyond textbook failure, that's worthy of a thesis in itself... even by law of averages, a dead rat would outperform this game on Steam. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this game to anyone.
