Truly horrible voice acting. One or two were passable at times, but really poor. Thank goodness for the skip dialog button. The minigame is silly, easy, out of place, and offers very little except a means to an easy 100%. The story didn't seem promising but to be honest I didn't give it a chance because I couldn't get past the voice acting. Thankfully I traded a game I didn't want for it, so nothing lost, other than less than an hour of my time. It's entirely possible I traded for the game because of the cute girl in the screenshot. I'm embarrassed. Avoid.
Genre
Ein kurze Kinetic Visual Novel mit Pac-Man Art Minispiele
Story

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow third group
Arr matey! Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows takes a new tried and true method that other visual novels used, but made it slightly better in its own indie way. Dabbing a little bit into history, this game utilized the war between the European powers to present a short and funny story. With the characters' voices, it provided a better level of immersion to feel that each character has his/her own personality. From the honorable Spaniard lieutenant to the calculating British lady, each played his/her own part to make it humorous. Of course, the highlight goes to Captain Firebeard has his crazy schemes keeps getting him into trouble, but alas the cliffhanger at the end makes me want Sapphire Dragon Productions to make a sequel. Also, the artwork and music definitely inspired a very authentic and swashbuckling drive to go out and plunder for some treasure. On the other hand, the mini-game was an okay feature, but I found Level 10 hard to complete. Luckily, the mini-game can be skipped which is a good thing since the last level was nearly impossible. Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows is a funny game, but it's different humor than what I see from other visual novels. I like their jokes and finds it refreshing compared to Japanese visual novels. Though, this non-Japanese visual novel may lack the length or the significant production values of top visual novels, it is an excellent visual novel to enjoy after a long day of work.
Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows Review
This time I don't wanna care about manners, Ok? This is just a piece of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ [ˈfʌkɪŋ] [ʃɪt]!
after all
May you guys gain more better game-playing experience!
Artwork and Literature, quite well done. Not too shabby novel story. Pac-Man style minigames acting as encounters which, may be skipped, but for achievements, one needs to be careful and avoid the sword. Only issue was unable to load the dlc Curse of the Crabs. Playable at the low cost.
I was given this game for free (Thank you) and... It's not that bad. It has really good artwork... I especially like "Marianne's" design of character and "Carlo's", mainly because he is the only other young guy I can look at. The story is about pirates. Yes, really... Didn't know it huh? You also play mini-games. Same one, different levels. Yes, there is a skip button ("X"). (If you played "Pac-Man", you will get it). It is well written, as in... I had no problems with it and understood everything. Some times it can get "technical", but then it picks up. Some parts were funny too! Set to an adventurous music! Oh and it is "kinetic" aka -> no options and you just read it, playing mini-games in between, if you feel like it. You will get around 2 hours of content. Unless you're a speed reader -> adjust accordingly. Problems? Well yes. The Captain seems like a completely useless person... I AM OKAY with stories doing that, IF they do things to redeem themselves. Unless... That is the whole joke... So then... He basically survived purely by luck. I mean it happens, but... "Marianne" and "Carlos" are the smartest people in there. "Ned" is funny. That's not a problem, the problem is that the whole thing/story ends in a cliff-hanger! You never know if the crew is rescued or others or anything much past a certain point. I will pretend they are and the Captain does something heroic actually and they get everyone together for one last adventure. "Marianne" and "Carlos" hook up, and "Ned" finds himself a fine lass/lad... It's his preference. There. I completed the problem I had. Good. That said, thank you for the pirate adventures at sea, that provided some distraction from other things. :D :> =)
Introduction
Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows is a kinetic novel that tells the tale of a pirate crew featuring an arcade-style game in between certain sections of the main kinetic novel like other games by Sapphire Dragon Productions
Gameplay & Story (No spoilers)
The game is a combination of Kinetic novel, a visual novel without any player-made choices and an arcade style minigame. The pirate crew is mainly lead by Captain Lucius “Firebeard” Cole. After getting his ship destroyed, his crew almost killed and aren’t rich, they meet a Spanish naval officer who claims to know an island full of silvers that’ll make the crew wealthy. The crew doesn’t believe them at first but takes the opportunity by trusting the officer overtime throughout the story. At certain points, you’ll play the main minigame, which is similar to Pac-Man, as you collect gold scattered throughout the level while there are enemies trying to get you with the occasional sword to fend off the enemies for a little while. It’s a simple game but it’s not really impacting on the story if you get a game over, in which you can just simply try again or skip the stage if it’s too hard. To me, it was the complete opposite, though I did die a few times and got some game overs as the game got harder. The story is also solid and the voice acting is really good in my opinion. However, the story’s ending seems way too abrupt and sudden in my opinion (though it’s a bit sad imo). I’m not too sure if they plan on making a sequel to the game, but the story just felt unfinished as soon as the ending appeared. As far as I’m aware, there isn’t anything impacting the story as this is a kinetic novel. I also didn’t catch onto the game’s sense of humour (with the exception of some repeated voice lines within the minigame). I’m not too sure if it’s my sense of humour not catching any of its jokes or something else though I think it’s probably have to do with my first point. Overall, although the minigame is albeit, too simple (which isn’t a bad thing) and the story’s ending having an abrupt ending, it’s a simple game that can easily be replayed over and over again.
Visuals
The visuals look really, really great, especially the characters. Though, I wish the minigame levels had more, visual variety to them. It’s not a terrible thing to see the same textures over and over again, but it would be at least to add a little more uniqueness to them. Overall, very vivid and solid looking visuals
BGM and other sound stuff
The music is also really good and fits the current situation when it needs it. The voice acting, as I said before, is also really good. Sound effects are also solid as well. Overall, very good music and sounds in general.
Conclusion
Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows is a unqiue kinetic novel filled with an arcade-style game. If you’re new to the kinetic/visual novel genre, I’d recommend it. Though I believe it’s a bit short in my opinion. If you’re not too sure to purchase it for full price, waiting for a discount isn’t too bad either
Shoutout
Special thanks to Sapphire Dragon Productions for sending us the game to review. This was one of the games I was fascinated while reviewing the game. Although the game felt just a little bit short in my opinion. But still, I enjoyed this game very much. We hope to see more from you!
Pros
+Solid voice acting +Beautiful visuals +Simple and nice minigame
Cons
-Game feels somewhat short -Ending feels too abrupt -No player made choices -Minigame can feel way too simple
Rating
7.5/10 Signed by 𝓐𝓈𝒽 𝓥𝑒𝓇𝓂𝒿𝓁𝓁𝒾𝑜𝓃 of the ᴀɴιᴍᴇ Steam Community Group
Follow the ᴀɴιᴍᴇ Curator Page for more Steam game reviews like this one!
