Normally I don't like to give out reviews this early but man I really want to do what I can do boost this in the steam algorithm. It's rare enough to get rail shooters ever and even rarer to get ones with a unique concept executed this good. Also big props for including a dedicated arcade mode and hard mode that don't require a full playthrough before unlocking. Well worth at least checking out.
Just finished the levels and even if I'm gonna go for completion I gotta say right now that I really like this game!!! It's very charming, colorful, with very catchy music and replaying the levels trying to go for a high score is so much fun, trying to not get hit to get the perfect 5 stars, so much fun, honestly I really do recommend it, even if it's a bit janky and buggy at times it is so charming and fun that it does deserve some attention After completing the game I have to say that there's a lot of bugs and glitches in the game that might affect the experience, they're slowly getting patched but for now they're still there and it's something to have in mind, in my case I still love this game because of its charming aesthetic, soundtrack and simple yet nice scorechasing gameplay, regardless of the bugs it is still very enjoyable
This is an on-rails shooter with a cheerful veneer and a lack of overall depth. It didn't particularly grab me. Perhaps this is a title that would have done well on a handheld like the DS, but I'd give it a pass.
Wow, the art style just pops out at ya and the music was somethin' I didn't know I would be nostalgic for. The creator really nailed that 90s feel from the n64 era and would really fit right in. On to the gameplay, where I had some issues. It's fun, though I'm a little disappointed that there's no multi-player although its definitely worth passing the controller around with friends. The problem starts at the practice levels or the lack of them. You get two short practice stages and then your pretty much thrown to the fire. While most games would start you off with some easy levels to get used to the mechanics, in candy ranger it wont be long before you get overwhelmed at the 3rd stage. Enemies spawning above ya and behind while tryin' to juggle 4 different color specific mobs feel like a lot on your plate. And when that wasn't enough they introduce 4 more mechanics. I could feel my eyes glaze over a bit as I was still tryin' to process what I learned two levels ago but still I grit through. Onto the biggest problem I have with the game, progression. Through out the overworld there are sections that are gated off with coin barriers. They kind of work like stars in super Mario or jiggies in banjo but the reason they work in those games is that they encourage exploration. The game is on rails and because of that you have chances to miss coins on different paths that you weren't even aware. But the biggest sin was that your were never told this until you get to the the coin barriers. So this whole time I'm thinking these are just collectibles like yoshi coins not the goal of the level. By the time I realized this, I had missed a number of coins and rather than going back and playing the levels again. It just took the air out of my sail and I quit. I'll probably go back and try again because the game just oozes charm but it left a sour after taste. I think if an update fixed the inconsistent difficulty at least at the beginning area I may change my review. While the game feels very polished the corse parts make it hard recommend.
A fun and breezy game with a very enjoyable core idea and some vibrant, endearing graphics.
A short-but-sweet on rails shooter with a lot of interesting ideas for the genre. Like a sort of top down Sin & Punishment, Mechano plays around with aspects like platforming, hidden paths, and certain enemy sequences being completed to attain in-game rewards and score. I think one of the best things about an on-rails shooter is applying a 'wow' factor, and many levels in Candy Rangers find a stride of doing a lot of cool things at once, bonking and shooting enemies in semi-color-coded fashion. The other big inclusion to the formula is having four sisters with four face button (or WASD on keyboard) bullets for each colored enemy. It's both color and general pattern matching, with x-axis red lines, z axis blue lines, y axis green lines and a corner yellow split pattern. The color and pattern matching is a very interesting idea to have to balance in the chaos, and if you're going for score it's something you have to take great care or you'll lose combo. Graphically the game is wonderful to look at. I enjoy the character designs and some of the enemy designs. I absolutely adore that each level has an unlockable art piece if you meet a modest score threshold, which does a lot to establish the game's vibes and define the characters. The music pulls just behind, with a lot of uplifting and interesting tunes. The story is very simple but it works and I liked their interactions. I honestly would like to see them talk and do things more! As a drawback the game has a very finnicky relationship with depth. Sometimes you get odd angles for traps that are hard to see, some patterns are so precise that it feels pretty difficult to pull off on a keyboard, and since your bullets are in a 3D space it's very easy to lose a combo by poking at the wrong enemy that's semi-off screen. A good amount of the score chasing requires some memorization in these annoying pattern groups. I also did wish the color matching was more intuitive rather than using a face-button-map. I also think assigning the four colors to the parts of a controller (being able to switch between popular configs, like Sony, Nintendo, Xbox, etc) would have been nice too. Still, very fun package overall. Feels like something between the DSi and a Dreamcast. If you like rail shooters, I definitely suggest giving this a shot!
