Candlehead is a decent attempt at an explore and escape style horror game but ultimately falls a bit flat. This is one of those reviews where I wish there was a "thumbs in the middle" system on Steam. But ultimately I can't recommend this title. You find yourself exploring a little British town/village which has been plagued by a serial killer that encases his victims heads in wax. A cool concept in principle and this killer soon takes the form of the titular Candlehead who wanders the environments looking to kill you. The issue with the game is ultimately the execution. 1/ If Candlehead sees you, you are dead. Ultimately it's easy enough to keep a distance from the enemy as his flame blazes in the darkness making him very visible. However if he sees you (sometimes from miles away) you aren't going to escape unless there is a loading screen nearby. He is faster than you can sprint and WILL kill you in moments. It's frustrating. 2/ The environment is by far the games biggest flaw. Basic gameplay involves finding keys, opening doors, looking for items so you can eventually gas your car up and escape. However, the environment is WAY too big. There so many empty spaces and empty buildings and no way of knowing where stuff you need is that it becomes far too boring far too quickly. The world is too open to make exploring and finding items a fun or even viable experience and this is ultimately the games biggest issue. SO in summary, cool idea, mediocre execution. Everything works so it's hard for me to say it's "bad". But I can't recommend it, a sequel with a much more narrowed down area and maybe enemy difficulty setting would greatly improve this.
+ Creepy atmosphere + Nice graphics + Cool enemy +/- Very short game - The rain audio is annoying - Very simple, go back and forth gameplay - Interiors of houses are boring and empty
Can't get much better than this
It just doesn't get much better than this like
OK
A big thank you to Ammonite Design for providing me with a key to the game. My first impression of the game and after playing for a while is how similar to Slenderman Candlehead is. Although, in this case, the main antagonist doesn't stay still but runs after you instead. This can be troublesome due to stamina management, and once you get spotted, you might as well start from the beginning, since it's nearly impossible to escape. The map is quite big and separated by 3 or 4 hubs that I've seen, with the bigger one being the town itself. With this last one lays the problems with the game, the FPS drops constantly and for no apparent reason, since the map is visually simple. I can't find a reason for this FPS drops and I changed my settings from High, medium and low, and the FPS drops are still there. This happens only in the town and it will make running away from Candlehead impossible. The game has an interesting history, but the save system needs some work; I kept saving my progress but upon dying you are sent back to the beginning and to do the same exact tasks, which will make the game tiresome after a few deaths. It's very fairly priced and I'm guessing after a few updates and balancing, it will feel even fairer. Totally recommend it if you are a fan of Slenderman. In here you get to meet his twin, Candlehead. (They're not family, I know.) You can check my YT video for my initial impression of the game: https://youtu.be/AlGqo_N7W9s
