It all started back with Company of Heroes for me, Squad movement, High Fidelity Sound and effects. A sense of makro to micro scale that just left you immersed beyond anything you've seen in RTS so far. CoH2 came out an I didn't know what it was but, things just felt off, i got in to "Men of War: Assault Squad 2" back then and finally found a worthy, no, even better successor of a game. Nowadays i don't know what Relic is huffing with CoH3 but "Call to Arms: Gates Off Hell" is the evolution of all which came before it. I love this game, i have no problem grinding campaigns to hours on end, it's just so much fun. Of course pathfinding seems to be the bane of this genre but even for that there is the solution of just plain "assuming direct control" (heh) of your units, down to freaking first person level! The missions are fun but can be broadly categorised into - Defend against enemy waves - Infantry Task Force - Mixed Doctrine Conquest While that might sound repetitive i feel like the developers got the pacing down quite well during the campaigns. You get a more tactile approach after a huge cluster frick mission and special twists thrown in between, like controlling huge artillery pieces like the "schwerer Gustav" to recap a lost fortified naval fort, or you move your squad of 7 Infantrymen through a snowstorm and try not to be caught by using throwing knives like in good old Commandos 1&2. I've yet to play a single round of Multiplayer outside of messing around with friends, so i can't touch on that subject. But i can assure you that it's very entertaining for many a cozy RTS solo sessions.
it feels nice to play and is a great game to get for anyone getting into RTS games
alright game
One AMAZING game, been a HUGE fan of SHOW2 all the Men of War and Face of War.... Company of Heroes games. But this is really the cream of them all, so gritty and so intense, you can go really into micro management of you want to, but you can play it as more classic RTS as well if thats more your jam. Great graphics, the sounds are just next level. The direct control works great and really adds to the game.
Beware. Not one of the pictures or video is the actual gameplay. This is one of those old 2d games that you move a piece at a time like a chess board. Like ants. Very misleading. There is nothing in the actual game that looks like the videos or screenshots. I was boonswaggled.
