Honestly, I wasn't positive how the gameplay itself worked from what I could see in the trailer, but I liked the idea of a construction game centered around speed. At least, it looked kind of fun at first, yet wasn't as great in practice as I'd have hoped.
Gameplay
The role you take on while playing is that of the architect overseeing a crew of builders, although you don't have to make any decisions about the design. That's determined by what stage and time period you're in. Based on what you're building, you'll set up the supplies for your team, who does all the construction work for you. It takes more time than you might think to create those materials, so although you won't be running around to erect the buildings, you will be hoofing it to get the components in place. Some of the building sections can be made with a single material, but many of them will mix a total of three together. This requires you to constantly set up components, with pretty much no other gameplay elements involved. As you progress through different eras and civilizations, new materials and styles will be unlocked. Since there's a small process to make the material construction-ready, and each one is handled differently, this slightly changes the gameplay. However, it primarily just changes the control scheme, not making much of an impact on what you're doing in the game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3124305531
Controls
Although the controls are responsive, I do find them a bit confusing. One aspect of that stems from different game modes you can switch between, because by default you aren't ready to set up materials or give orders. Another area I found odd was that you have to select what square you're building on, as the game doesn't default to ignoring the areas not outlined for construction. I think I'd find it less perplexing if I merely chose between different parts of the building, not having to worry about empty squares.
Story
Frankly, the plot behind BD is bonkers. Purple fog is eating every building and house on the planet, which is somehow bleeding through time and removing them from the past as well. Ergo, looking through books or online posts about the subjects would come up blank. Appropriately enough, people are freaking out about this matter, but the ramifications of this would be far bleaker than what's shown or glossed over in the game. I'm positive society would collapse if all the buildings vanished, with everyone exposed to the elements and devoid of protection. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3124306411
Visuals
If you aren't careful with how you run around the area, you could make yourself motion sick with the way the camera follows your character's movement. Aside from this possible issue, I don't find the camera angles to be a problem, as you're able to see everything you need to. That's in part because as you advance to the higher floors, scaffolding brings up the entire construction process, meaning the partly finished building doesn't obstruct your view. I also liked the cartoony look of the character models, along with the colorful backgrounds.
Sound Design
Something I've come to expect from games is that distinct areas will have accompanying music, as it's a good way to develop a theme. BD follows that system by having a unique song for the different areas and time periods you'll go to in the campaign. It's a shame that the other elements in the game don't much the enjoyment I got from the songs, as I like them well enough. They make for easy-listening while concentrating on the gameplay. If the levels and amount of time in each world were quite long, each song could get grating over time as there's only one per area. Otherwise though, they suffice. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3124307049
Pros
🌟 Even though you can earn three medals per stage, in order to keep advancing, you only need to earn one from the stage you're on. Since one of those involves building things accurately, the slow and steady approach should get you through the whole game. 🌟 The game has both local and online coop available.
Cons
❌ By only the fourth level of the game, I already was far too slow to earn the time medal. It makes me wonder how optimally one would need to play to keep up with those goals. ❌ The mechanics of the gameplay heavily restricts your options. If a wall needs three materials, you have to present all three at once before the worker will start building. ❌ Materials are set around the stage without any sense for convenience. By design you have to run back and forth like a maniac.
Tips
🔍 If a worker only needs one material, them needing to run over to you for it doesn't matter that much. However, when working with three materials, the extra distance adds up, so it's prudent to move it closer to the building site. 🔍 After playing a stage once, you'll know what resources need to be created for the builders. This means you can prep them in advance instead of waiting to find out what comes next.
Final Thoughts
Despite my initial interest, BD didn't wind up being as fun as I'd hoped. Unlike some other games I've looked at lately where flaws existed outside of the gameplay, in this case that's my primary issue. I don't want to be too reductive, but all you do is run around in circles mashing buttons so your workers have materials to use. It feels less like you're an architect and more like you're a lowly gopher. The only element of strategy is prioritizing what parts to work on first or which materials you'll obtain in what order. Playing BD causes an odd sensation, where you're both responsible for getting everything needed or else the workers do nothing, while also being so passive because you just sit back and watch them actually construct the building. If I'm going to be so involved anyways, I'd rather take full control. Either let me be the person with the vision, navigating menus and managing resources while the AI does the heavy lifting, or let me get my hands dirty and take it all on myself. In this case, you split the difference, and wind up with the worst of both. This wasn't nearly as fun as I'd hoped, so I wouldn't recommend the game.
Nice game with pretty artstyle. Also love ability to coop and controller support (run pretty well on SteamDeck)
