CarGo!
Overcooked».
⭐⭐⭐⭐🌑 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3446605593
A review copy was provided by the developer.

Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - Seriously Flawed ★★☆☆☆

First Impressions
Since I regularly have a friend visit, I'm always on the lookout for local coop titles. Frankly, I'm not always a fan of the wacky antics sort of games, but I found it hard to assess CarGo! (CG) solely from the trailers and scant number of reviews. Obviously, it involved driving around the little town, trying to deliver cargo, and I imagined it focused more on car wrecks and stunts than being any good at the job. In reality, since you're trying to keep up with incoming orders within a time limit, it's more similar to Overcooked than I'd have thought. Unfortunately, that wasn't my favorite multiplayer title.
Gameplay
Even in the tutorial mission, the game reveals that your objective isn't solely to take completed goods and deliver them to the warehouse for cash. Instead, you'll have to take materials to factories so they can be processed into a finished good. The upper-left corner will display what items are wanted, and whether or not there's still a bonus available for delivering them fast enough. Theoretically, you can ignore that list and deliver items not being requested, but it doesn't earn the same amount of money. Each stage has different cash requirements to reach three stars, which are used to unlock more levels. I find the need to be involved with making my own items to deliver mildly annoying, but if that were the only factor to contend with, I'd like this game more. However, because there's so few levels, it quickly starts throwing too many variables into the mix. Before long, not only will you have to time your routes around road blocks and rising bridges, but avoid speeding past police stations, lest you get pulled over. When my friend and I were playing through the levels, one of my first thoughts were, “Let us enjoy the gameplay before throwing all this crap at us! We hardly know what we're doing, and trying to keep up is a greater struggle than I expected.” With games like this, I think there's an unspoken rule that you'll increase the hijinx with different mechanics, yet in this case, they stagger multiple mechanics on top of each other, and it gets overwhelming. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3413734942
Controls
Instead of controlling your vehicle directly by pointing where you want to go, it functions much like steering a real car. It's oriented on your current location, and left/right is based on the direction it's facing. I'm making this distinction just in case someone might think holding upper right would make the car move that way, like I was kind of hoping for. Aside from my own issues adapting to the sometimes slippery handling, I think the controls work properly. This does vary based on the vehicle you're given though, as the race car seemed to handle the best, and due to its compact size, driving the small moped is more difficult just because it can be hard to tell what your orientation is.
Story
As you start the game, there's no cutscene or introduction explaining why you want to earn money. It's solely focused on gameplay. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3413735647
Visuals
Maybe I'm getting a bit old, but I found it slightly difficult to look across the screen, and easily identify the resource each location produced or required. Certain aspects help distinguish between possible similarities, like painting the entry point yellow while outgoing goods come from a light blue zone. However, with how things appear on my monitor, I wish everything looked larger, as if it was zoomed in 20% or so. As it is, the overhead view is a fine choice for this gameplay, but I found the scaling to be slightly off. When looking at the aesthetics, I think the cartoony look of the town was a good choice, since you're often driving around like a maniac.
Sound Design
I wouldn't have thought to pair a game like this with bag band tunes, but it wasn't the worst match. When other sound effects aren't competing against the music, they make for enjoyable songs worth listening to. There seemed to be some variety based on what the level was like, as the icy levels near the end didn't play the same music as the more congested locations just before them. Since the sound effects include things like traffic and honking horns, they aren't the most enjoyable noises to hear while gaming, and can easily distract from the songs. Overall, it creates a mixed bag for how the audio plays in this title. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3413735286
Pros
🌟 If you play local coop, it can support a total of four players. You have to earn more money to get stars though. 🌟 The difficulty isn't too high, but stages can get annoying.
Cons
❌ More than once, I've tried turning items into the warehouse as the timer is running out, and it seemingly didn't accept the delivery. From my perspective, if I get something into their in zone before the timer runs out, it should be counted. ❌ Despite introducing so many mechanics to change how levels play, the number of levels creates a short playthrough, with little reason to replay them, especially when a few of them are really obnoxious.
Tips
🔍 There isn't any indication when you're running out of time or getting near your goal. It's worth glancing at the timer to see if you can finish making a product, or you should just turn in some resources for a quick buck. 🔍 You don't get a good overview of the entire area until the level starts. It might be worthwhile to drive around and get a feel for the routes and obstacles before quickly restarting.
Final Thoughts
Although I complained about feeling overwhelmed when trying CG with my friend, once I went back and tried it on my own, I was earning three stars on each level for a while. However, I started getting annoyed with my puny moped getting bullied by other cars. None of that matters very much considering there's only 15 levels to complete in the entire game. Even if my friend and I were having more fun, it would have skidded to a halt within a span of two hours. In addition, there's very little reason for replaying a level once you've earned three stars. I think the game would have worked better if mechanics came up less frequently, and were more spread out across a larger number of levels. Allow players more time to adapt to the gameplay, let them enjoy less challenging set-ups, and then start making levels more tricky. Unless you really like the premise, and don't mind a short playthrough, I don't recommend picking up this cargo.
Great game to play with friends :)
10/10 would crash into a package again 💥
Good game
Chill game, perfect for you and your friends. I'm waiting for more future content.
Fun, chaotic game that's a ton of fun with friends! The snow levels are pretty annoying though with how slow you get with driving over the snow. Also, the parts with the tiny truck were a little finnicky with how you could cruise through certain alleys. Anyway, the game runs fine and is genuinely a good over-all package for around 2 hours of fun at the price it's at ($13 CAD).
CHAUFFEUR PARISIEN SIMULATOR
