Buck Trucker in Rowdy Business is a really strange little adventure, but I had a surprisingly good time with it. I play as Buck Trucker, a rough around the edges trucker who heads to Las Vegas with the goal of saving an orphanage back home. The whole thing has this wonderfully ridiculous mix of comedy, gambling and questionable decisions that made me curious about what would happen next. The gameplay is mostly about making choices and dealing with whatever consequences come from them. I can talk to different characters, explore the casino and take part in gambling activities such as blackjack, slots and horse racing. I liked that the gambling is not just there as a random side activity because money becomes part of my decisions and can influence where the story goes. The characters are probably the best part for me. Buck is an intentionally ridiculous protagonist, and the people he meets are just as strange. There is a lot of dark humor throughout the story, and I enjoyed the fact that the game is not afraid to let my choices lead somewhere completely absurd. The multiple endings also give me a reason to replay the adventure and see how differently things can turn out. The pixel art presentation fits the retro comedy style really well. The hand crafted character portraits help give everyone some personality, while the casino setting provides plenty of opportunities for weird situations. I also liked how quickly the game moves between dialogue, exploration and mini games. It never feels like it is trying to be more complicated than it needs to be. My biggest issue is that the experience is quite short and some of the gambling sections can feel more like supporting activities than fully developed mini games. I also think some of the story branches could have been explored more deeply because there are characters and situations that feel like they could have supported much longer adventures. Still, I appreciate how focused the game is. It is clearly designed to be a quick and replayable interactive story rather than a massive RPG. I enjoyed making questionable choices, seeing Buck get himself into trouble and wondering whether I would actually manage to save the orphanage. Overall, Buck Trucker in Rowdy Business is a funny and surprisingly charming little adventure. I liked the strange characters, gambling mechanics and branching choices, and the retro presentation gives it plenty of personality. It is short and somewhat limited, but the humor and replayability make it worth checking out. Rating: 6.7/10
