■Game features
-The first in the series to feature ""dungeons"" that change every time you step into them!
Each time you enter a dungeon, the shape of the stage, the platforms, the enemies that appear, and their placement change, so you can always enjoy a fresh level!
You don't necessarily have to beat all of the enemies in this game!
Simply trap them or defeat them your way, and move on to the next stage by passing through the donut-shaped gate!
In the dungeons, it is easy to get ""treasures"" that can be used to make Bub stronger, so dive back into dungeons repeatedly to collect treasures and build Bub's skills up!
Once you get used to the controls and familiar with leveling Bub up, we recommend challenging your limits and dive even deeper into the dungeon!
- Uncover the map as you traverse massive castles. Another series first!
Castles are massive stages filled with a labyrinth of rooms. Will you get lost in the maze, or will you use your wits to make it through?
Unique bosses also await you inside, so give Bub the proper training and equipment to aim for the deepest part.

- Master new and returning skills!
The Water Bubble is back in a new form!
You'll also find new skills that will help you along your journey, like Balloon Wig, which you can control mid-air, and Rolling Attack, which wipes enemies out.
Use skills to break through paths that were once inaccessible, and wipe out tough enemies all at once!
Master them and sweep away your enemies in one fell swoop!
- Find the skills and strategies that suit you!
The skills you have learned become items you can use.
The number of items you can take to a dungeon at once is fixed, so it's up to you to decide what kind of skill items and useful items you take and how many of them you take.
It is also up to you to decide in what order to strengthen Bub with the treasures you have collected.
Try to find the skills and strategies that suit you!
■The setting of the story
The setting of the new Bubble Bobble game is a world full of ""strange"" sweet treats!
Candy-shaped enemies start appearing in vibrant dungeons."

Reviews
Begrudgingly, I'm going to have to say 'no' on this one. I really tried to enjoy it, but the irritants outweigh the positives! It ended up at a point where I ended up thinking "Ah, I really don't want to play this again, I'm just wasting my own time. Doing these same annoying level patterns over and over kinda sucks, even if they are in a random order." The core idea of the game has merit, but the way it's implemented is painful. "You can use treasure to upgrade your abilities!" - Not until you can beat 40 stages without ever getting hit in 100 seconds. The whole upgrade thing is post-game mechanic. Unless you can play 40 rounds of the original Bubble Bobble without being hit a single time, it's unlikely you'll reach this point. "Complete missions to earn things!" - You earn currencies like gems which you can't actually use. Again, it's for the post-game. "There's dungeons!" - There's two dungeons, and they're kind of annoying to play. It's based around slowly clearing out enemies with powerups you obtain before you start the dungeon. "You can take items to help you!" - The items you 'take' are limited use consumable bubbles or items that let you skip floors. The skip-floor items would be nice for, say, reaching that 40th round without getting hit, but you can only take four items with you. "The levels are random!" - It's the same handful of layouts in a random order with minor differences, like thesame layout being horizontally flipped, or a couple of enemies being slightly harder versions. It has severe difficulty/balancing issues. Normal players won't even reach the point of character upgrades, and experts will be turned off by having to grind for items before being allowed to play further. Here's hoping they balance it in some way in the future, but I'm not too hopeful - it seems like an abandoned proof of concept game that they decided to ditch and just release what they had made so far.
The idea of a rogue-lite Bubble Bobble is, admittedly, a solid one in theory. Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons has cute graphics and is fun enough to play, but is unfortunately pretty much ruined by odd design choices. There are two dungeons and two castles to pick from. Castles have a set design and merely task you with navigating them before fighting a boss. You get a bunch of missions that reward you with materials and new features as you complete them, but the real meat is that the dungeons become practically endless. While this could have absolutely worked, the developers decided that the game needed to be slavishly devoted to its roots to the detriment of the entire experience. You can level up various skills, but this is moronically locked behind clearing 40 floors of the first dungeon. Doesn't sound too bad? You can only take a single hit and you have a time limit. Run out of time and, just like the classic games, an invincible enemy shows up to hound you. The majority of players won't even be able to unlock the ability to level up skills due to this. Even if you can avoid enemies indefinitely here (good f*cking luck with that), the time limit makes things a far harder sell. You can increase your time a bit by killing enemies, but it's still not enough. All of the above coupled with a stupidly high price ($40 USD for a game like this is almost as insane as locking skill level-ups behind such a ridiculous barrier) means that the game is absolutely not worth picking up. It's almost astounding how bad the devs f*cked this up.

Taito I love you but c'mon. Controls are very laggy and Bubble Symphony music is a glitchy mess. Refunded!
If you weren't satisfied by Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, which was essentially a puzzle game borrowing Bubble Bobble mechanics and lacking the frantic arcade action, seemingly targeted at a younger audience... You'll likely be disappointed by Sugar Dungeons, which seems like the same kind of thing. I'll always have a soft spot for this franchise but I'd rather see it grow with its audience. (Okay what I really want is a new Rainbow Islands game... One of these days...) However, it does come with Bubble Symphony, which is awesome. Probably not worth it at full price but maybe on sale.
I am happy to support any Bubble Bobble please consider making a Rainbow Islands remake :)
I feel terrible whenever I'm forced to give a negative review to a franchise I love, but here we are. The overall feel, difficulty, and crafting leaves me feeling that this was a game originally intended for mobile where you could either grind or pay your way through, but was then decided near the end of the development cycle to just put it on PC as a premium game instead all while forgetting to remove the mobile trappings. You're given 1 life where you're only 1 hit to complete each area, power-ups (especially the coveted single use extra life cookies) require grinding extensively for a ridiculous amount of crafting materials, and any meaningful upgrade is only possible very late into the game where you won't really need it anymore. The dungeons have very little pattern variation and also a very strict timer that takes more time and effort to refill by any meaningful amount than you'll most likely be able to replenish unless you get a room that makes it fast and easy to create a large chain. I do appreciate that it tries to reinvent itself with rogue-like gameplay elements and encouraging you to pick and choose your battles by making combat optional, encouraging you to only fight when you see a possibility to create a large enough chain to be worth it - but these opportunities are seldom and overall the game just doesn't feel fun or fair in comparison to Bub's past adventures. The real treat here was the inclusion of the arcade game, Bubble Symphony, which is easily my favorite game in the series besides the NES Bubble Bobble Part 2, and in my opinion, would've been worth the price of admission alone. However, Taito dropped the ball here as well and the game is littered with a handful of noticeable and annoying visual artifacts that aren't present in other ports of that game such as Taito Memories for the PS2. Hopefully Taito revisits this title to fix where this game went wrong so I can change my review.
Bubble Bobble Sugar Dungeons is a really good evolution of the Bubble Bobble formula! It's a super fun game and I cannot stress that enough. The game features both dungeons and castles, dungeons being closer to the original Bubble Bobble arcade game in a sense where it's level to level, while castles are an entirely new mode where you explore room from room (the castles were 100% the highlight for me, and I wouldn't mind a game that was JUST those if I'm being completely honest). The game has a really good difficulty to it. It starts out pretty easy, but then after the tutorial missions, quickly starts to get really hard, dare I say harder than the originals. There are a lot of very unique gimmicks this time around as well Whether it be brand new enemy types, ice physics, breakable blocks, etc. The game always felt like it had something new to throw at me near the end. However I do have to express my feelings towards the things I was not a fan of as well. For one, there are only two worlds, which was very disappointing, because most of the new stuff happens in the second one, and the game left me wanting more after the final boss. While yes, the dungeons are there and can be endless, the layouts feel about the same as one another, and I didn't feel much variety at all after a while in those. I feel as if the missions were a little too grind dependent also. Most of my time was grinding the dungeons just so I could complete enough missions to do the castles, or unlock a skill that I needed. (or even be able to craft cookies which work as your lives in this game because normally you can only take one hit). It felt like while there was a lot of play time because of this, there wasn't actually too MUCH to play if that makes sense. Like I said, the castles are by far the best part of this game in my opinion, and they both feel amazing, so when I found out the second one was the last one, I was a bit disappointed because that one did so many cool new things that Bubble Bobble has never really experimented with before, but as quick as I got to it, it was over. I want to state that I didn't even unlock everything that Bub could even do before I got to the end. Which I guess this game's focus is replayability, but it's a bit hard to want to replay it after the ending since I had to grind those stages to death to even GET to the end of the game, and I feel like I've seen everything at that point. EDIT: in the soundtrack, there's music for a 3rd dungeon, and two other Castle themes, however I didn't get any kind of mission to unlock either of these if they even exist in the game currently, so take that with a grain of salt. Overall, I still say that I recomend this game, but only if you're a huge Bubble Bobble series fan like I am. There are a lot of surprises, such as some characters appearing in the MAIN Bubble Bobble series for the first time (like Woolen, Liber, etc.), and brand new gimmicks as mentioned earlier. However I do have to say that if you're picking up this game, to get it on a sale. I do not feel as if it was a 40-50$ game, and I was expecting a lot more. The problem isn't that the game is bad, it's that it feels like it ended as soon as I was getting to the really cool brand new stuff, and I do hope that they add more content to the game in the future because I feel as if this game could really benefit having more stages and / or game modes. Bubble Symphony was a fun bonus though!
