Bramble: The Mountain King

Bramble: The Mountain King is a well-constructed platformer that effectively alternates between peaceful and dark themes to tell an impactful story. Play as the younger brother who tries to save his older sister from the woods, overcoming challenges and making allies in the process, and uncovering the darkness of the kingdom that requires you to overthrow a despotic, tyranical father-like figure. The variation in the level design and aesthetics is adequate, and the various bosses offer a memorable experience with modest challenges (Skogsra being my favourite). The graphics are great, the music score blends well, and the voiceover offers top-notch immersion thanks to the voice actor's Galadriel-esque narration. Unfortunately, the game offers few hours of experience (perhaps 5-6h tops), with limited difficulty in challenges, and random deaths attributed to mis-perception of the movement depth and dimension mechanics can be occasionally frustrating if one is going for the deathless achievement run. Overall, Bramble is an effective re-telling of the classic "kill the dragon, save the princess and the kingdom" story that highlights the passage from boyhood to manhood, in an aesthetic narration wrapper, with surprisingly effective use of dark themes that contrast an initially happy-starting fairy-tale. 7.2/10 Would recommend on a hard discount
