It was interesting to learn about real championship matches and play out why the losing player resigned.
This series of BOT.vinnik games are really true chess lessons. In this new game, I ended the chapter "Romanovsky" which surprised me with the moves of this master that made me really think about very interesting solutions to related challenges. Very good, I recommend.
BOT.vinnik Chess: Early USSR Championships is one of around six educational Chess puzzle games where you play subsets of chess games under guidance from a slightly snarky 2D retro pixel robot. The purpose is to teach advanced Chess stratagems to the player. Playing this game and understanding the puzzles will definitely make you better at chess. While the puzzles are fun, and the core design work, especially the puzzle selection and presentation and narration of the puzzles is very good, the implementation here is not so good. Each game only has around 20 short puzzles, and it's unclear why this had to be launched as 6 separate games. Did the publisher really want to pay Valve $600 instead of the $100 required to launch a game? The visual and interface quality is very low, as well, with monochrome 2D retro pixel art making everything look ugly. This is the kind of thing that really could have been done in a browser or even just a Youtube video, so charging money for it on Steam seems overly ambitious.

This whole series of games lacks a lot of things you would expect from chess "puzzle" games, and the issues still persist here. I do think that the Early USSR Championships is a much more interesting game than some of the other prior ones, as it presented puzzles/situations that required more thought. However, it also didn't really allow me to run through different scenarios of moves, as a lot of times the outcome was not a forced series of moves. A free play mode post puzzle or some more in depth explanations would have been good. There were a few scenarios where I didn't really understand why the opponent made certain moves in response to my moves.
Early 1900's Chess match examples.
Great game. Very challenging and I recommend for anyone likes chess.
This is actually a really cool chess game that uses historical examples to demonstrate and explain how/why past chess pros chose the moves that they did. Just don't mind the bad English.
