Excellent Blood Inspired retro fantasy FPS. The guns feel great and the levels have that Build Engine feel, despite being on the GZD engine. The use of sector lighting makes this all feel particularly perfect. For a game made by a single developer and their mum, they should both be extremely proud of what they have achieved. Truly outstanding with the minor gripes being some of the cutscene frames are a bit rough, the voice acting could be a bit better (Developer has a thick accent) and there is a bit of a lack of variety in the enemy roster. Other than that, everything is just perfect.
Love the feel of the game but it is outrageously expensive for what you get. The dev needs to consider pricing it appropriately if he wants sales. It should be $10 max. Its a GZDOOM Mod. Also the mod has a staff that lets you shoot bees so it gets a thumbs up
Awesome gem of a game. A nice blend of heretic, blood and doom all rolled into one. Nice level design and a decent length of a game. Enemy roster is interesting and balanced. The music is also nice and charming! If you are a fan of oldschool fps games. Borrowhelen is definitely for you. I recommend this game :)
A really enjoyable game that feels like it stands in between Blood and Heretic - levels are relatively simple but surprisingly complex in layout; gameplay is enjoyable as well, with plenty of secrets to find as well as a secret level for each episode (only found 2 of them) The story got me surprisingly engaged; whilst it's not really innovative or new it was still enough motivation to get me going and there's a few cool drawn, animated and voiced cutscenes to continue the plot onwards. Can definitely recommend this.
If you are looking for an experience as close to the 90s as possible. PLEASE PLAY 'BORROWHELEN' It's a slow burner with VERY entertaining aspects along the way. It has that FPS charisma of the MSDOS era. Of course, it's not perfect but is a very good GZDOOM game with Lots of passion and hardwork. PLEASE support your indie devs and give it a try!
Very nice gzdoom boom shoot that has unfortunately flown under the radar.
I'll update this soon just want to give it a Thumbs Up now while going through it! We need to push this Hidden Gem from 2024 so hopefully it will get to 10 positive with this one! Real Boomer Shooter!
Putting a review up for this lost build engine cousin, as it draws more than a little from Blood. This game has a fun arsenal and some enemies who probably skipped the class on cliffs.
Very enjoyable boomer shooter clearly inspired by the Doom and Build engine games of the 90's (Heretic and Blood, specifically) that still manages to have it's own identity. Excellent atmosphere that a lot of similar games in this genre fail to capture, probably due to the simple, but clever level design. Only major complaint is the enemy AI, it gets caught on corners trying to simply walk towards the player often. I also have a hard time understanding the voices in the cutscenes, even with music turned down I found the dialogue hard to make out. Very impressed, and will be looking forward to any future games by the developer. Hopefully this game gets a wider audience during a sale, as the price is a bit steep and might deter people from taking a chance on it.
