Bomb Bay feels like a student's first crack at making game content beyond simply adding stuff to a level, although they still need practice at that too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpET5BD7bq8 This game is a collection of five or so singleplayer missions that see you navigate some bare bones maps and complete very simple objectives such as arming bombs on planes. The missions are very boring and easy even on the hardest difficulty. The A.I rarely responds to gunshots unless they are either shot at directly or are roughly 10 feet away from the player. They then simply run towards you and start shooting. Sometimes the A.I doesn't even notice you despite being a few feet away and looking directly at the player. Mission objectives in Bomb Bay are very simple, usually just planting bombs at specific points that have one or two enemies guarding them. In the level I completed the bombs didn't even explode after the mission ended. I simply went back to a helicopter and left. The combat is very rough as well. It all feels like Unity templates for combat that didn't have anything added to them. Shooting weapons makes the model flop around the screen but there isn't actually any recoil so it doesn't make sense. The weapons seem to have a preset cone of fire but the aiming reticle is a tiny little thing in the middle that doesn't reflect the weapon patterns at all. Objects in the game look really rough. Many textures are stretched or just not applied properly making the entire game look really ugly. Some items look like they are from completely different asset packs and don't mesh with any sort of aesthitic. There is also a weird amount of shadows in the game. Some objects have shadows but others don't. This looks very odd and distracting. The main menu in the game has a really bad photoshopped head that looks like the forehead was stretched to be half a foot longer than it should. The options menu claims to customize the graphics with a few presets, but clicking on them doesn't seem to give any feedback as to what happens so I'm not sure if that worked. There is also this weird elevator beep that constantly plays during the main menu and I don't know why it's there. Super annoying. Like I said at the start, this game feels like a student project or something. It's at least got a little bit of effort put in certain spots but there is no way I can recommend it for $7.99 CAD. This is a game that should have a home in the free section of itch.io so the developer can get some feedback and slowly turn it into something that works properly. Even in Early Access this is nowhere close to ready for market. The developer said they even considered releasing it as a finished product and I find that a bit baffling. The only feedback I can give is to make the game free on itch.io or Steam, because this isn't ready to cost any amount of money. As the game is, it is not amazing. This game has a long way to go before it is completely flushed out; however, even with the flaws that this game has, it is still fun. I enjoyed playing through the levels and can see myself playing them again, as I missed side objectives and other secrets. I would reccemend this if you are bored and want a short game to play through.
I don't write reviews for games so this will be a pretty medicore take at it. To start off I'll give you the short of it, for a game made entirely by one person on a simplistic engine it is a good entry into the steam catalog of games that is littered with broken and unplayable trash.
Gameplay
Like I mentioned before this engine is known to be simplistic unless you are an actual game company with a budget to pay for very expensive version of it. With what the developer had to work I'd say this is great. The movements and gunplay are surprisingly smooth and it is genuinely fun to run/sneak around the levels lurking up on enemies and killing them with a stealthy mace swing from behind. The guns themselves feel very diverse and act appropriately to their real world counterparts. The setup is similar to that of old school shooters like Doom and Quake with their ammo and health pickup styles with a modern touch of stealth from newer games like Splinter Cell or Dishonored. I am definitely a fan of this, being my favorite part of the game overall. The AI is the only part of gameplay that I can complain about. They are very simple and lack any real intelligence. I have been told by the developer that there are updates for this to come in the near future so I'm not too worried about it right now.
Level Design
The game's most unique aspect and honestly the almost entire source of replayability (besides getting achievements) is the level design. I love how every single level had it's own style and feel that made going back and looking through all the nooks and crannies of the map worth it. Very reminiscent to older shooter titles like mentioned before. More levels would definitely be one of the most wanted additions to the game in my book.
Replayability
This is currently the game's most lacking feature as of this review. Right now with a total of 5 levels not including the tutorial, there is a lackluster amount of time that you can put into this game before you've done everything there is to do. While the levels are good in my opinion, there isn't enough to give someone enough things to do to have more than 5 or so hours max on the game in it's current state, but that is the beauty of early access so I'm sure the developer will be working on this title to make a more fufilling experience for everyone in the near future.
Conclusion
To sum everything up, this game is decent. The gameplay and level design are old school with a nice modern flare and are good enough to make hours on the game not feel super repetitive. But the lack of content in it's current state hold it back from being a title worthy of full release. I give it a 7.5/10 in it's current state. Hopefully it will improve over time and that will increase :).
