board quizz adventure is a trivia game with maps where players start on opposite sides and they have to reach the village before their opponent. steam's remote play together technically makes it work online, otherwise it's only local multiplayer, no ai opponents. the developer said they might add them, hasn't happened yet. the store page also says it's for an unlimited number of players, but it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. only 1v1, but if you have more people around, they can give advice or take turns with the controls. exactly like every other game in existence, pretty lame 'feature' to highlight. there's a short tutorial, one of the worst I've ever seen, so here's how it works. both players move in real-time, it's not turn-based, which is another bummer, but I'm sure a more chaotic trivia experience is fun for some people. so you walk around the map, categories come up when you're near an obstacle, and bumping into one brings up a question. a correct answer lets you progress, an incorrect one blocks that path, gotta find another route. there's no timer and you can back out of questions without consequences. movement is tile-based, yet feels a bit floaty, but controls are rebindable and keyboard and controller both work. mouse only in the settings menu (not the main menu, nor while playing), which is not ideal, but what's even worse is hotkeys for answering questions are only visible in the tutorial, not while playing. sure, you'll memorize them after a while, but come on. there are 3 possible answers every time and you can use a joker if you have one, or simply surrender. at the end of a round it's either back to the menu or continue, and after every 3 rounds there's a recap and a new mechanic added to the mix. stuff like asking a witch to hide the opponent's answers or steal their jokers, getting helpers to clear the way for you, or escorting people to the village. everybody hates escort missions with a passion, so why not add them to a trivia game? you can toggle these in the settings, but they are only icons there, with explanations only available randomly on the round recap screens, otherwise you're looking at a sheep, wolf, tent, king, lumberjack, etc. without knowing what the ♥♥♥♥ you're turning on or off. there are a bunch of maps and thousands of questions in a couple dozen categories, so it's gonna last a while, but you should be able to customize the experience some more. random map generation would add a lot, as would more tilesets (winter, etc.), but simply letting players toggle categories or choose maps would help too, as well as setting some end goals like a 5-minute timer, 10 correct answers, 3 villages reached, whatever. without this, the game only ends when you quit and it's not the same, even with recaps every 3 rounds. the presentation is really good, graphics, music and sound effects, but settings are a mixed bag. only a single music toggle, no volume settings, plus a couple of languages and resolution options, but no windowed mode toggle, have to press alt+enter. not sure why, but the whole thing feels a bit incomplete or unfinished somehow, and there have been multiple patches since it came out, so the initial release had to have been much worse. even if the issues mentioned above get addressed, without ai opponents and more customization it's only recommendable to a very specific audience, and only on sale. if you want something similar, check out trivia throwdown, and of course nothing beats any and all you don't know jack titles.
Not a bad game, but some improvements could be made to make it better. 1. Having the option of a score limit? Right now it seems that it just goes on until both sides agree that the one with more points wins? 2. A topic filter for questions? I get that it's supposed to be general knowledge, but not everyone is a genius. (It is rather funny to see friends struggle to answer questions though).
I'd say positive, because I like the concept. But by nature of two players frantically answering separate trivia questions, I felt like we didn't really talk or interact much. You're too busy reading and answering to really joke around with each other. Maybe a mode that forces things to be turn based would be better?? Then you can take your time a bit, be more strategic, and better understand how the other player is doing. Another thing, is 2 times we were both completely blocked, and the game doesn't have checks in place to just end the level at that point. That would help
