A much better game than the developer's first attempt. It remakes an obscure and pretty lame Spanish ZX Spectrum game (any videos I found have it completed in less than 10 minutes) whose only memorable element is the opening picture of a bird-flipping werewolf*. But it does what a good remake does: every detail of the original seems to have been carefully studied to update it for the better. It's not the cleanest pixel art around but it's a great update of the original graphics (some sprites seem to actually be the original ones edited), like an Amiga version that never was. A little detail I like is how Bloody folds his ears when crouching. The little story the game has is conveyed through pretty good comic-style illustrations in place of the scant text of the original. By the way, to my surprise even the plot has been kept the same, ending included! There's a reason all bosses except the final one are statues brought to life: they simply are statues originally, background elements that stand out more than others. That alone says a lot about how much the stages have been expanded. A lot of standing scenery objects (poles, trees) can even be knocked down onto enemies. About those, what about the mummies doing rope-skipping with their own bandages? So funny. They are among the enemies that fall with a single hit and cause damage on simple contact; a few other enemies that require several hits can hurt the player only when launching their attacks, thankfully. Despite being a werewolf, the protagonist is not very agile and the controls are quite stiff; that, and some quirks like the inability to cancel an attack animation to jump, are, in my opinion, the biggest enemies in the game. It doesn't lend itself much to platforming, which becomes very annoying at the end of the third level, which lacks a boss in favor of a series of jumps between moving cars. I don't know if it's limitations of OpenBOR or lack of one last useful layer of polish. After some adaptation, however, it becomes part of the game's charm: it's not a "modern" experience and doesn't want to be, it requires a careful approach to each obstacle and enemy to come out on top. If two power-ups are collected without being hit, Bloody acquires both a long-range attack and a double jump: this means a skilled player is rewarded with the means to make things easier (I've seen videos where that end of the third level becomes a cakewalk with full power). Even with all the expansion from the original, it's far from a long game, nor does it need to be one. The Classic mode gives an approximation of the original Bloody Paws; stripped of all the improvements, it feels as lame as it should be, but serves to highlight how much of a better game Unleashed is. Recommended when discounted. [*That picture appears in the ending credits but is deprived of the bird flip. Strange censorship.]
Foda!
Starkes Remake!
I love this game!
