It nails its retro aesthetic, adorning the Other Dimension’s surfaces in sickly, candy-colored neon and bombarding my ears with a high-tempo chiptune track. While at first I am confused by a lack of twin-stick controls in a presentation that borrows from twin-stick conventions, I adjust quickly. I enjoy discovering the best combinations for upgrading Zealot’s gun and how to deal with the array of different enemies she encounters. It’s in its economy where Blitz Smash Ultimate begins to break down. There are no compelling choices to make between crystals and Red Eye Orbs since the two currencies are made interchangeable by a pivotal NPC. Once I’ve purchased every upgrade, there is no incentive to do anything in the Other Dimension except run to the next boss. I am entertained and charmed by Blitz Smash Ultimate in my first few hours with it. That’s all I expect from a videogame, especially from a low-budget indie like this. With a few tweaks to some of its systems, I might enjoy it for much longer.

The game's setting stands out thanks to its energetic visual identity, presenting a world that feels both mysterious and inviting rather than relying on the darker tones often associated with the roguelite genre. At its core, Blitz Smash Ultimate focuses on fluid combat and constant movement. Players navigate procedurally generated stages while battling hordes of enemies that attack from multiple directions. Success depends heavily on mastering positioning and learning when to attack or evade. One of the most satisfying mechanics is the dash ability, which functions as more than a simple evasive move. It can be used offensively to crash into opponents and even redirect incoming projectiles, adding another layer of strategy to every encounter. This design encourages an aggressive style of play where survival is achieved through skillful movement rather than passive caution. The game's most distinctive feature is its bullet customization system. Throughout each run, players discover different bullet powers that can be combined to create new firing patterns and effects. Instead of locking players into a single weapon style, the game promotes experimentation by allowing numerous combinations that significantly alter combat behavior. Some setups emphasize raw damage, while others focus on crowd control or unique projectile interactions. This system ensures that individual runs rarely feel identical and gives players a compelling reason to continue experimenting with different builds. Roguelite progression is handled through permanent upgrades earned from collected resources. Even unsuccessful runs contribute to long-term advancement, making defeat feel less frustrating and more like part of the learning process. Unlocking new abilities and strengthening existing ones provides a steady sense of accomplishment, especially during the early and middle portions of the game. The progression loop effectively balances immediate rewards with long-term goals, creating a satisfying cycle of exploration, combat, and improvement. Boss encounters serve as some of the game's strongest moments. These battles introduce dense attack patterns that demand concentration and quick reflexes, often feeling inspired by classic bullet-hell shooters. Players must combine movement, timing, and weapon knowledge to overcome these challenges. The bosses are designed to test the skills developed throughout each run, making victories feel earned rather than handed to the player. Combined with the randomized stage structure, these encounters help maintain excitement even after multiple playthroughs. Another major strength is the inclusion of local cooperative multiplayer for up to four players. The addition of couch co-op transforms the experience into a lively social game where teamwork and experimentation become even more enjoyable. Coordinating builds, sharing the chaos of large enemy waves, and overcoming difficult bosses together greatly increases replay value. Few modern roguelites place such emphasis on local multiplayer, making this feature a welcome addition for groups looking for an accessible yet challenging action game. Visually, Blitz Smash Ultimate embraces a bright pixel-art presentation filled with neon colors, energetic animations, and retro-inspired effects. The aesthetic successfully captures the spirit of classic arcade shooters while maintaining modern readability during chaotic combat situations. The soundtrack complements the visuals with upbeat and energetic music that keeps the action feeling lively from start to finish. Although the game does not aim for graphical realism, its artistic direction is memorable and contributes significantly to its charm. The game is not without minor shortcomings. Some players may find that the permanent upgrade system becomes less compelling once a large portion of the available enhancements has been unlocked. At that stage, the motivation to continue grinding resources may decrease slightly. Additionally, while the story provides context for the adventure, those seeking a deep narrative experience may find the plot relatively straightforward. Fortunately, the strength of the gameplay systems compensates for these limitations. Overall, Blitz Smash Ultimate succeeds as an entertaining blend of roguelite progression, arcade shooting, and cooperative fun. Its creative bullet-combination mechanics, fast-paced combat, colorful presentation, and strong replayability make it an enjoyable experience for both solo players and groups of friends. The game may not reinvent the genre, but it introduces enough unique ideas to carve out its own identity and remains consistently engaging throughout its progression loop. Rating: 6/10
