I really like the core concept, but the game is very clunky and all over the place. The combat and mining are both atrocious in quality and should have been left out. I wish the forging part would be more interesting (more of a mini game where you can do badly or really well, achieving over 100% quality, be it with more of a puzzle like mini game, or trying to hammer the metal into a specific shape that is shown or whatever). The shop keeping part is barebones too unfortunately. What really breaks the game is poor quality of life. The controls are all over the place (sometimes you have to left click, or right click, or press Q first, or equip from inventory but you don't even see what you have equipped, ..) and the performance is very meh. My RTX 3080 could bruteforce it, but pulled more watts to hold 120 fps than it does in Cyberpunk, despite the game's looks. Some kind of stat page when finishing a weapon would be nice too, plus a bit more creativity on how to make weapons (or maybe armor in the future?). Even for the low price it's just lacking unfortunately.
If I could write a neutral review, I would do so. Blightlands Blacksmith, for me, has very good and very relaxed blacksmithing mechanics, EXCEPT for the assembly portion. Designing a weapon ( albeit with a limited amount of design choices) feels good, Hammering away a hot glowing ingot feels good, Sharpening sort of is OK but for the life of me I can't keep track of both tapping Space and A and D simultaneously. Mining is simply atrocious, pulling the cart is nauseating, and the combat is not at all there. You just craft yourself a high dmg weappon with enough eldritch damage and you're good. The mining portion becomes non-existent even, if you gather 10 of each ore and sell it to the quartermaster. The story follows an interesting premise, and I love that I am the manufacturer of weapons for the legion. I love that my work progresses to the "campaign" of the legion depending on what kind of weapon I sell to the banner officer. What I do not like about this, is that the scouting missions have an absurdly slow turnaround time and have rewards that are redundant. I wish that we have agency on what scouting mission to support. Overall, I'd say the crafting mechanics are close to what a relaxing but skill-based blacksmithing game must have, but the developer seems to have ceased the updates for the game. This doesn't feel like a finished product, and there so much things left for improvement and innovation. Is it a waste of time? Kind of. The crafting is relaxing, and a good way to past the time, but down the line it isn't very as gratifying as the first few hours. There is little to no reason to craft good weapons when the campaign is done, when the mines become obsolete, and when you've had scouting missions that give nothing new. Buy this game, but don't get your expectations up. It's fairly cheap, and I bet the dev just created this project just to try creating something. Overall I will not recommend a game that ceases to improve, but I don't completely discourage trying it if you're curious.
I like this game. It has a fairly intuitive system for the smithing and a good amount of customization for the weapons. I'm eager to see where it goes as the devs continue with the game. Out of the two smithing games I've played this one is definitely the superior.
If you're looking for a relaxing Blacksmithing game then this is it. It has a natural flow to the core crafting loop, and is genuinely enjoyable. It has a surprising amount of objectives you can focus on, from map progression/exploration via selling weapons to the legion, Clearing points of interest by designing weapons to match the conditions and selling them to adventurers, fulfilling custom orders to customers specifications, or just crafting a weapon for yourself and exploring the mineshaft in camp. It also has the ability to apply enchantments to your weapons, and the metals used affect the quality of the weapon. This game has its quirks, but i feel like they just add charm to it. If you're looking to experience what its like to be a fantasy blacksmith crafting anything from mundane cheap weapons, to legendary weapons that would break any RPG they were added to, this is the game for you
Great blacksmithing sim, scratched that itch that more robust rpgs or crafting games were never really able to. Only "missing" features are mostly QoL stuff which the dev seems to be rolling out all the time. If you're on the hunt for a good blacksmith sim then I highly recommend buying or at least wishlisting it and keeping an eye on it as it's only getting better from here.
Overall a rather simplistic game based on older game designs. However, for $3.99 I've played for 26 hours and that's good value for me. If you're up for a minimalist retro game of blacksmithing, it's a fun flashback.
solid fantasy blacksmithing game for a solid price
i have been playing this little gem on and off for a bot now. The developer has been very active and has fixed every problem in a couple days(yes days, not weeks, not months!!) what i believe is the best part of the game is about halfway through you unlock many different gems and materials to smith with, making the combination of items crafted unreal, colors, textures, style all play in combination to make some truly unique items. then enchant them with elemental effects on top of that so as far as a relaxing crafting game with questing and light exploration(mines) its very good and easily worth many times the low price its selling for
Did you just Google something about a blacksmithing video game or a video game where you forge custom weapons? Look no further. I've been loving the early game and can't wait to find rarer ores, gems, and runes to make even stronger weapons. I just discovered some lesser runes and iron ore and was able to make myself a much stronger runed steel weapon, which should help me face tougher enemies and explore the mine even deeper! The entire weapon design and creation process looks awesome, isn't too much of a grind (no pun intended), and I literally feel like I'm shaping the metal with each click when I'm forging at the anvil. I also see strong evidence of very dedicated and ongoing support from the developer, so looking forward to seeing the game grow. Happy forging!
I have played a few blacksmith games here and there on steam but have to say this one is quite a good one. May take a little to get use to the controls but once you get the hang of it is rather fun and a bit challenging but fair to craft the perfect weapon. Do like the touch of the npcs walking around the camp to make it feel a bit more alive and can even try out what you craft down in the mines on monsters to see how each weapon type works. Even after beating the game I feel like starting over again and do a challenge of some kind....maybe using copper and alloys that use copper only? Or only one weapon type like axes for example? I will need to think on other challenge ideas but am interested to find out if its possible. So if you are one that likes to play blacksmith simulator type games I would say pick this one up I am sure you will like it. Even the dev is still working on it here and there when they can.
