Black Hole Hazard is an action puzzle spacewalking game with unique control and a fascinating sci-fi story. Controlling the gun's recoil in space and distorted gravity will be very challenging. Be Dr. Albert, shoot the jet / laser gun to survive against the unknown enemies and find out the truth.

Introduction
Black Hole Hazard has been developed and published by Superthumb. Far from your regular 2D platformer, BHH is story-driven and dependent upon the many collectible log files which help unravel its storyline across a large variety of levels.
Gameplay
I was more than pleased by its novel use of jetpacks, gun recoil and gravity instead of the far too common platform jumping, you may be accustomed to in this game genre. Black Hole Hazard is relying on both several enemy types as well as the level environments themselves, in order to offer a fair challenge. It is exactly the right level of difficulty with the combat and obstacle avoiding sections being sprinkled with gravity based puzzles to ensure a well paced gameplay, never becoming stale and also far from causing any rage quitting. You’ll also feel compelled to seek out the aforementioned log files, each revealing a new bite-sized clue into the game’s mysterious background. And since they are well scattered across very many levels, you can add that too, on the list of features this game provides in order to stand out from the platformer crowd. The game is certainly not lacking in the looks department, with detailed sprites, chromatic effects and well drawn cut-scenes. The sounds do feel a bit flat and repetitive but as far as I’m concerned this might be the title’s only flaw and far from an Achilles' heel. Lackluster sounds are the pitfall of many platforming games so I’m willing to cut some slack to BHH since the well detailed storyline and pleasant looking levels hold their own without having much interference from the sounds.
Pros
+ Interesting graphics with colorful effects. + Steam Achievements & Trading Cards. + Level diversity and many collectibles.
Cons
- Sounds are a bit repetitive.
Result / Final thoughts
Few indie devs present their debut onto Steam so well as Superthumb managed to, with their intriguing Black Hole Hazard. A game with few flaws which manages to provide hours of fun without necessarily innovating the platform genre. You’ve almost come to expect Cards and Achievements from such well polished games and your presumption is correct. For its asking price, the gaming experience is both complete and most pleasing. I see the positive reviews for this game and wonder what I'm missing... I am actually the person this game is really aiming for. Love puzzle games, enjoy platformers, but I just find this game unbelievably tedious, and frequently frustrating. You are basically using awkward controls to try to slowly move your way through levels without running into anything that will kill you. It is difficult, but in the wrong way. It is basically difficult just because trying to creep through these levels can be so painful, the desire to go faster becomes overwhelming, which ends up getting you killed. You then restart the level or start back at the last check point and try to do the same tedious section again, but slower so you don't die. I can understand that there may be people out there patient enough to get a little enjoyment out of this but I just can't imagine there are that many. I have not really had the urge to smash a controller / mouse in years and this game had me there in under 2 hours. If you would like some more info, feel free to check out my video below for my full impressions (although if I am being honest, it's mostly me just trying to explain how tedious the whole thing is). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=757766193
Lost in Oblivion: Introduction
Black Hole Hazard takes us to a surreal journey trough space, where we will take control of Dr. Albert Armstrong who disappeared in the middle of an experiment. The International Nuclear Research Center (INRC) tried to warn him, but it was already too late, and he ended up lost in space without any idea of how to return to Earth. In this intriguing platformer, we'll get across seven different chapters in order to unveil the truth and find a way back home. Although the story may sound a bit cliche at first, we discover shortly afterwards that there is a misterious signal that is going to play with both the character and the player's mind.
Beware of spikes: Gameplay
The game is set in a 2d perspective and we can control our character with just a mouse. The movement starts whenever we press the left click button to activate his gas-firing jet gun, which works like a hand jetpack. The thing is, gravity and physics will affect every moment, and that's what makes Black Hole Hazard an unique game in it's genre. Some walls will make us bounce, others will kill us in an instant with spikes, and the list goes on. We also have a fire weapon at our disposal (with limited ammo that recharges over time) that can be upgraded by finding hidden items troughout the game. In terms of level design, Black Hole Hazard's first chapter feels like a huge tutorial. We start seeing the first enemies we'll encounter, and learning how to get around in space without dying too much. The difficulty never stops increasing, but the game feels like a relaxing challenge and the player will always fall in the trap of “just one more try before I go to bed”. It's amazing what the developers have achieved with such a simple premise. The story has a decent length with around 150 levels to complete, they all have a Time Counter so we can compete in Leaderboards, and there are hidden logs that will help us to travel deeper into the story. We can also find a Bosses at the end of each chapter, two different endings and a Survival Mode.
Pros
- Interesting story with two different endings, cutscenes and a boss encounter at the end of each level. - A solid gameplay that benefits from variation and great level design that keeps evolving throughout the game. - Awesome soundtrack!
Cons
- Sound effects could use some work
Final Thoughts
Overall, Black Hole Hazard is an entertaining experience that everyone should try. I feel like the mechanics could have been used in a much larger adventure, but that's a positive thing for the development team. The gameplay is solid and addictive, and I can't wait to see what they are planning for the future.
Game-play
+ Challenging & intelligent level design. + Checkpoint system makes the game more balanced & less frustrating. + Tutorial is well put out & easy to understand. + Boss fights. - Controls may feel very uncomfortable & frustrating for some people. Its quite challenging with a good level design. Check-point system makes it feel a lot more fair, tutorial is well done, boss fights also add up to the core game. Controls however maybe very frustrating
Visuals
+ Smooth & neat animations. + Presentation is nicely done & looks good overall. + Stage-backgrounds look very well. In terms of the price as well being a indie game, the visuals do a fine job if not a great job.
Story
+ 2 different endings. + Gets interesting later on, while feels quite cliche at first however it still does the job. - The intro is quite a bit poorly done. Two endings, story feels quite cliche however does become interesting later on. Intro is however poorly done.
Sounds+OST
+ Music is very well done to the theme. + Sounds are retro like & do the job. Music feels right at the theme, sounds are quite retro like while can get repetitive but do the job.
Conclusion
If you're looking for a challenging plat-former this is worth a look, while controls can be very frustrating however the visuals, core game-play make it all worth it. I would recommend it at its current price.
Okay so, as someone who does not do a lot of platformers... I quite enjoyed this game on my first ride through it which you can see here if you'd like: https://youtu.be/2jkCIcWcdLM SHORT: The control are great, the gameplay feels flawless, the soundtrack is great and immersive, and there's something about it that's addictive like some other people have said. This is a game I can see myself picking up and playing again - I'm glad I bought this game and that's RARE for me with platformers. LONG: I dropped out of platformers a while back, at least with 2D when it came to the indie industry because there's been a lot of the same, but that's how it is, right? I really like how this game takes you off the "Mario-Rails" and into space where we can control where we go. For the price, if you even remotely enjoy platformers, get this game. It's worth it. Granted, this IS just from the first few levels of the game, but as a 28 year old vet, I feel confident with this game.
This review is based on the free demo and not the completed product. I have heard from the gamedevs and they addressed several of my points. It will be fun seeing some of the changes while playing. (The checkpoints are already a life saver). They also stated the gun becomes vital later in the game so hopefully I can get good enough to get to that point. Upon starting Black Hole Hazard, the first thing I noticed was that there were several grammatical and spelling mistakes in the movie. This worried me a bit about how the game was going to be. I should not have been worried. The game is very well designed. The puzzles so far are challenging and well thought out. I have tried the 1-1 to 1-8, but I have to admit at this point I have only managed to complete the first 3. I can see how as the game evolves it can get far more challenging. Level 1-7 in particular was designed by a sadist. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think one thing that would make the game better is by removing the gun. It just feels "too easy" taking out the spider creatures and diamonds with the gun instead of thinking your way around them. But, if the gun gets used in more creative ways later in the game I can see how it will work. The music is great and atmospheric while fitting the style and the environment. I particularly like the use of shadows and would like to see darker levels where the light and shadow effect becomes more important. At this point my review is as follows: Intro 4/10 Music 8/10 (could change up sometimes) Graphics 6/10 (Good for what the game is, but could be more varied) Gameplay 9/10 This game is going to be a good game once it's complete. It's pretty challenging (though that may just be my aged reflexes) and provides a nice learning curve. (Level 1-3 threw me off by changing up how the switches worked, I actually thought there was a bug in the game). If they add more variety and different challenges, obstacles, sprites, and music as the game goes on I think it will keep a players interest for a long time. If you're looking for a challenging puzzle game, this one is worth a look.
This is a very fun puzzle/space (eum since I float can I call it a platformer..?) game. I have not played something like this before, controls based that is. And I do enjoy the game a lot. Even with the timer, I still feel relaxed playing it and trying to figure the puzzles out. I might even go and try to beat my own time. Some puzzles are tough and something tells me it will get more difficult soon, but I'm okay with that. I like a challenge :) The only con I can find, and that's a personal thing, is that the music can be a bit repetitive. But if that's the only thing, this this price of this game is a awesome deal and a recommendation for sure! This game is a great indie game, with okay graphics and a pretty interesting story. The gameplay does get a bit repetitive, but hey, you spent how much on this game? I've spent three hours in the game so far, I'm pretty interested in the story, and I'll probably keep on playing it. Is it worth a dollar? ... Do you want indie developers to eat? Buy the game.
