Beneath a Steel Sky (1994)

I liked this game. But I think I did myself a disservice by playing on a large screen. I had to look up a walk through for half the game just because I literally couldn’t see the things I needed to interact with. I’m not new to point and click adventures. I love Syberia and sanatorium. This was just very dated . And it’s hard to see. The music is incredibly repetitive. It is an old game though. Optimized ok. Played on SteamDeck LCD. 3/5 rating .

Un excellent point'n'click, pas aussi comique et ludique qu'un Monkey Island ou intéressant comme un Indiana Jones et le Mystère de l'Atlantide, mais ça reste tout de même un jeu qui mériterait d'être connu par plus de personne. En plus, il est gratuit.

Super, dass man so einen alten Klassiker kostenlos spielen kann. Man muss für einige Rätsel schon echt genau schauen und manchmal auf das gute alte alles mit allem Kombinieren vertrauen, dann kommt man eigentlich ganz gut durch. Ist jetzt nicht meine Lieblingsgeschichte, aber trotzdem interessant.

Replaying Beneath a Steel Sky almost 30 years after I first played it was a bit like opening a time capsule and discovering that most of the contents still work. Sure, it's impossible to judge a 1994 adventure game by modern standards, but what surprised me most is how well the story holds up. For a game that's over three decades old, the writing, world-building, and characters remain sufficently engaging. The gameplay naturally shows its age, but that's part of the charm. More importantly, if you're planning to play Beyond a Steel Sky, I'd strongly recommend starting here. The sequel benefits enormously from knowing the original story, characters, and setting, and several moments simply land better if you've taken the journey from the beginning. A classic that has aged far better than many games half its age.

Certainly THE best point-and-click game I ever played. The atmosphere is stunning in many ways, but also depressing and even terrifying, as it is so utterly believable. And Joey is one of the most interesting companions you'll ever came upon in any type of video game. It's really astonishing that a game with a release date of 1994 still runs on modern hardware, without requiring any kind of remaster or tinkering with local files to get it to run. There are many games that were made well after this game that won't even start on a multi-core CPU. And if you consider that you can play this game for free, it's even more amazing. Too bad they don't make games like this anymore - the one that comes closest to this is probably Primordia.

Love the retro visuals and music. The story was actually interesting, even if this type of thing has been done before. My favorite part was the dialogue/voice acting. It's a cool take on a dystopian sci-fi future. It was surprisingly funny, and even the characters with a few lines were memorable. The gameplay was the weakest part. Point-and-click games aren't my favorite, and mixing it with the slowness of an old game made for a slog of an experience. Some "puzzles" felt very out-of-place and random. Having to do crucial steps based on random easy-to-miss pixels forced me to go in circles way too much (and with the turtle pace of everything, I played for way longer than I needed). I'd recommend playing with a guide unless you have a LOT of patience.
