Reviews
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/B-6t4pfDCiU Live, laugh, refund? Behind the Frame, non-VR, is actually a really well-made, cozy, narrative-driven game that is rated overwhelmingly positive on Steam for good reason. Behind the Frame VR, however, is not well-received and is a pretty bad VR port. It is not worth buying. What is wrong with this VR port? Well, just about everything. The visuals look good in the non-VR version, but they don't look good in VR. The VR interactions are not well thought out, basic, & also very clunky. While I found the non-VR version to be a smooth and polished experience, this VR port is frustrating to play. I often had to repeat VR interactions until the game finally accepted the same interaction. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting mostly 90 fps, but there were also several frame rate drops. While I did not experience any major issues or bugs, the game overall lacked polish. Images rendered would clash with each other and block view from one another. Interactions would take several attempts. The sketchbook UI was difficult to navigate and highlighted objects were often difficult to see. You do have full locomotion, along with snap turning available. There are no graphical settings, only sound, handedness, & language. My in-game height was too low to the ground, so I had to stand up for various scenes. If this game looks interesting to you, just buy the non-VR version. You'll be much happier. I even think it looks better in Non-VR (you get full-screen cut scenes versus the floating 2D viewing rectangles you get in VR). If you want frustrating, anger-inducing gameplay, then this is the version to get. Rate 3/10. I should refund, but I won't just because I do like the non-VR version.
If you enjoyed my review, please consider joining my Steam Curator Group. God gives the rockiest VR ports to the greatest games. Let's talk about this game in the order of things experienced: 1, price. This is the same price as the desktop game. I wasn't charged extra for the VR port, but I wasn't discounted for owning the original, either. No complaints. 2, panels. The desktop cutscenes are back!...in ultra small size. There's no good way to show 2d animations, but/so this is an obvious thumbs down. 3, render priority. Holy paint, please learn how to code. I'm a firstyear at Lake Washington Tech and even I know how to do render priority. You can see your fingers through your hands. You can see your hands through your journal. You can see your fingers through your brush. And speaking of... 4, model quality. Amber's house is gorgeously remade, and now fully navigable. Jack's paintbrush is pretty nice, too...and then there's Amber's pencil. Amber's pencil consists of probably 8 polygons with a 2d black panel stuck on the tip. It's beyond lazy, it's downright laughable. And then we have to talk about the last, best scene. The lavender fields. Amber and Jack's flashbacks are now fully modeled, and they both look amazing. But the lavender itself is made of sparsely placed crude lumps of purple fuzz. This needs to be fixed asap, even more than the pencil. 5, overall. The experience is fantastic. Accompanying Amber through her morning is all the better when you toast her bread and break her eggs with your own two hands. Then eat it, wash it down with coffee, and get ready to paint. The atmosphere -- the best part -- is still there, and all the better. Should you buy? YES. Laugh and regret later, cause you'll still love it.
This game is pretty awful. Its extremely hard to figure out what to do at most times probably because the cut-scenes break, the UI breaks, the dialog stops a millisecond after it starts. The game drops you in weird places at times and gives absolutely no indication of what to do. I really do not like this game and I am only going to finish it because of the achievements. It's also really boring, you fake paint things and solve really confusing boring puzzles which are only confusing cause the game doesn't tell you what to do, ever. Not sure if they even play tested this. Maybe only the devs did cause they knew what to do.. 2/10 stinky
Schade! Schaut gerne selbst rein — wirklich schade. Gameplay wise, not very good, while I don't mind most graphics in-game, all of those scenery scenes where you click around for events to happen are absolutely horrendous graphically. There is really no reason to play this VR alternative to the standard game, even for a heavy discount.
awful port on VR, I never played the "normal" version, but VR one feels terrible. Ditched the game, won't be finishing it
Made me sad, also the VR port of the game sucks ass.
